First, the little village of Ettal is a rare find. You can stay in Garmisch or Oberammergau and have immediate access to more restaurant and bar options. What you'd miss is the charm, the incredible scenery, and the true Bavarian village feel you get from staying in Ettal. Wolfgang & Martina are your hosts and they have created a peaceful, relaxing, and well appointed home-away-from-home for you to enjoy. We booked the day of our arrival and communicated easily with Wolfgang via the Booking.com site & email. Your chalet is a three level log cabin situated roughly 100' above the town and pastureland below. The views from balconies on all three levels is right out of a painting--lush, verdant pastures; tree covered mountains (with just a hint of color in early fall); ribbon waterfalls flowing down the mountainside; a 14th century abbey just to your left; the peaceful little village below. Inside, you'll find Wolfgang & Martina covered every little detail. The main level is spacious and inviting with a well appointed kitchen perfect for making breakfast (we chose to get delicious sandwiches at the bakery Wolfgang recommended, though), and dining table that will seat eight, and a half bath with a washer (great for families). Off the main level is a full sized porch so you can take in the sights of Ettal. The two bedrooms are downstairs and each features a queen sized bed with duvet covers and two wardrobes for hanging/storing garments. The main bedroom features an in-room sink and claw foot bathtub with hand shower. The bathrooms share a full bath in the hallway with a nice waterfall shower. I love this place for a few reasons…read more 1st - the room we were in was beautiful. I asked for a room with a view and that's what they gave us. The room was modern and really well thought out. 2nd - the food was really good...especially the deserts. Breakfast was good but dinner was on another level. 3rd - the staff were so helpful and professional. The place is well staffed. And they took care of everything (even cleaning off a spiderweb on the outside corner of the back exit door - nice touch). 4th - parking was easy and practical...right next to the hotel and you can walk your stuff right in. 5th - they always seemed to be cleaning. 6th - the location is central and it makes it easy to get to all the cool places. Highly recommended Ohhhh - yes...they have their own herb garden which the bar tender proudly showed me.

The Gondola will take you to 2 stations, half way and the top of the mountain. If you get there early enough you could do both maybe I only had to to go straight up the mountain and walk both side up top. Amazing view of the mountains and mother nature's beauty. I can't hate on the Wankbahn…read more 1. Ok, it's childish - but "WankBahn" is a little funny if you're an English speaker. Even better is the bar at the top called the Wank Haus. 2. It's WAY cheaper than the Zupspitze ascent at €22 pp. The problem with going up the Zugspitze (besides the crazy cost) is that it takes a long time and of course, you can't see the Zugspitze when you're on it! 3. Burg Wank is about 1800m tall, so you get a tremendous view of Zugspitze and the whole local range. Plus if it's cloudy or crappy at higher altitude it my be just fine here. 4. Instead of a big cable car, you get a tiny 4 person car. It's terrifying!!!! But the views are worth it. 5. I think far fewer tourists go up this cable car, so it's likely to be much less crowded at peak times. Today, there were maybe 4-5 people at the peak total. It was my idea to ride a cable car, and I picked the WankBahn so we could see Zugspitze and save some Euros. I'm terrified of heights so imagine my face when we reached the station after a terrifying ascent...only to find that we were just halfway and the second half was WAY steeper. I almost schiesse'd my pants....but we made it safely and took some amazing photos. So, if you're in the area and are looking for something to do - check out the WankBahn!

A gorgeous guest house in the village of Fischbach which is about 5-7k from Bad Tölz. There is a…read morecircuit that you can follow from Bad Tölz which is about 12k through the country side and halfway through the walk is this gorgeous little village and guesthouse. They have rooms to stay and a Bavarian restaurant with an outdoor biergarten. It's very peaceful and quiet here and of course if you don't speak German then you probably will struggle. The menu is only in German. The waitresses were less friendly than I expected and barely smiled at us. The menu was extensive and included all the standard Bavarian dishes and seasonal items. I had the Bauernente (duck) which came with a salad, red cabbage and Kartofflekanodle. The duck was brilliantly cooked and the meat just fell off the bone and was moist and tender. The salad was really good and was not drowned in dressing. The knodle was moist stodgy and tasty. All in all a fabulous meal :-) Happily come back here again for a Bavarian countryside dining experience.

I booked this place for 4 nights because the reviews were good and it was half a mile from my friends and from downtown. It's PERFECT!!!!! The room is clean, comfortable and neatly soundproof. I wish I had stayed here for the entire 10 days I was in Garmisch. The breakfast is outstanding and the service is equally as outstanding. I highly recommend this hotel. They even helped me book my ticket to Zugspitz! I have zero complaints. Excellent hotel in a perfect location.

The staff are extremely helpful and prompt and if you need any help they are always wiling to help. Like many hotels in Germany don't expect air conditioning as this is not common. In the summer months leave your windows open and hope for the best.

We arrived around 8:30/9pm, i was nervous about driving up the hill because it was dark and NO ONE was around, i was unsure that we were going to the right way! When we arrived, there was a note on the door with my name on it, WRITTEN IN GERMAN! Uh okay...i realized it was saying that we are room 12 and theres a lock box right next to the door. Our key worked and we made our way up. The room was awesome, it was a but of french country style, very nice! the best part was THE VIEW! even though it was nighttime, we could still see so many stars and the outline of the beautiful mountains. Our balcony was perfect! we woke up early the next morning to see suns rays hit the mountains. Breakfast was served in their main dining room. The usual breakfast fare we saw during our trip. Meat and cheese, hard boiled eggs, toast, juice, cereal. I would come back purely based on the view! p.s. don't be alarmed by all the roaming bulls as you drive up! (they scared us on the way up, was not expecting that!)

It would have been reallly helpful if that door had said; 'rooms 2-4' or similar. All in all, it was a great experience and we'd go back!
