We transited through here to get to Salzburg and see a few nearby castles while in town for 9 days. We found it a bit more confusing to navigate than the Central Station but were easily able to find snacks and foods for lunch and find our platforms.

We took many a train to and from our second "home base", Marienplatz. The thing that I loved about starting and ending at Ostbhanhof was the fact that we could take practically any train - going in the correct direction, of course - if we wanted to stop at Marienplatz. That meant we rarely had to wait for a train, which was an added bonus, given we were there in the middle of winter, and there is no shelter from the cold, wind and rain on the platforms. Signage is plentiful, there are plenty of ticket machines scattered throughout the station, and one can buy anything from pastries and coffee to lotions and toothpaste without having to leave the relative warmth of the station itself. Our last train out of Ostbahnhof was the one to Salzburg, so we were able to connect locally as well as "internationally". It definitely made it easy for weary travelers, with just a bit of German language on their side.

Two S-Bahn tracks here and two U-Bahn tracks, so it's a busy transfer point and of course the Marienplatz at the surface is a busy destination. Easy navigation with escalators, stairs and elevator between the different platform levels, the ticketing concourse and the surface. And of course, lots of entrances/exits to street level which are labeled and there's signage to help you know which is the right exit closest to the strasse you're needing. Several quick grab-and-go restaurants on the ticketing concourse. The station is served by the S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7 and S8 S-Bahn lines plus the U3 and U6 underground lines. They provide cheapy headphones for you to listen to the pre-recorded audio track if you don't speak German (which is blaring over the loudspeakers in the bus). Nothing really special, and if this is what city bus tours are like, I probably won't do any more in the future. They have a couple other routes to try, as well, but I can't imagine that they are any better than the main city tour that I took. So here's the funny part: my wife was commenting that our driver was very aggressive, but I didn't really agree... until he rear-ended someone!! So that delayed us a bit while they worked things out...

This bus tour service helps to familiarize you with essential areas and also gives you some simple history along the way. Nicely priced and you have the option of using your pass to get around if you're tired of walking. I had a good camera and sitting on the top level ( the bus had two levels) I was able to take quite a few very nice photos. That was a bonus! You're up a little higher so it worked well. Do this as a tourist to get your bearings or the city. :)
