I don't normally post negative review, but I must warn parents. My daughter was excited for her second year at Riverview. She had a great time with activities and making friends. Then out of nowhere a veteran camper "reported" her for ridiculous claims and manipulated others to make claims and tell half truths. These claims were accepted without requiring any context to the claims. They were all taken at face value. My child was sequestered for a night until I was able to pick her up from camp. My child was treated like she had mental issues taking away her belt, not allowing her to see any other campers, etc. She was not allowed to even speak to me privately over the phone so I could get her side of the story until after I picked her up. This camp claims to have Christian values, but all I saw in the adults eyes was judgment when I picked up my child, who didn't do anything wrong. She was the victim of a witch hunt and the adults were either too biased or inexperienced in real counseling to see the truth. read more

My daughter went to the last session of Riverview this year (2016). It was her first year there (she's 12) but she went with friends who have attended for several years. They were able to stay in the same cabin...which was a good thing. At first she was homesick, but after the first 3 days or so, she said that she made friends and was having a great time. She really liked being about to choose her activities. Ropes and gymnastics were her favs along with volleyball. She participated in the whitewater rafting excursion and it was really neat to see all the pictures that were posted on the camper/parent portal. Her only complaint was the the food (typical for a kid to complain about) wasn't that great and that there was a lot of junk food available!! She says she wants to go back again next year. I have two daughters who have attended Camp Riverview for 10 years now. They began as campers at ages 9 and 11 and have loved going more and more each year. Our girls grew up so much as people, learning leadership skills and teamwork. The camp is "pure" fun with so many activities for the campers to choose from. No electronics are allowed so the children actually connect with one another. But no worries.... the girls' smiles are vast and many, even without YouTube or Netflix! As far as the fact there is no a/c in the cabins, it is often chilly at night and a/c is not needed. Also, I cannot say enough about the camp and the staff who run it. They are kind and thoughtful, not only to the campers, but to the staff (I know because my girls are now counselors there). Susan and Donna know each camper's name and specific needs without having to "look it up" on a chart. They are involved and LOVE what they do. They truly care for these girls. My daughters attended Riverview when it was Camp Saddle Rock and now my granddaughters are attending Riverview and loving it just as much. Riverview is two weeks away from phones, TV, boys, and all social media ......just time to relax and be a KID. They have friends from all over they see every summer. First off, this is not our first camping season at Riverview. On a positive note you are greeted with excitement and everyone is polite and friendly. The owners greet you and the process to get your camper(s) settled is started. The young men that are there to help your camper unload are very helpful. The camp is an old camp in Mentone Alabama and the scenery is beautiful. There are fun excursions available that you can sign your camper up early for extra fees. The camp is an "unplugged" adventure so no cellphones or wifi devices are allowed for your camper while they are there. Now for the reasons for a less than perfect review. When we first arrived I overheard one of the counselors say she didn't want to be housed in the same cabin as the campers. Initially I blew this off because I didn't want to make a fuss over one thing. As stated earlier this was not our first year and there is a program /app that you can pay additional for so you can email your camper and send them notes. The app is not owned by the camp but does require input from camp admin for the whole process to work. This was important to us because it is really the only way to communicate with your camper. The first year there were many bugs to work out with this process. This year we didn't get any notes until the night before pickup which meant most probably that the notes were not put in. Our camper became aware of this about the second day and went to a counselor and then staff member to make sure a note was getting through and while the assured them they would send the reply none were sent. The food offered did not sound like it may have been the healthiest (but there were no complaints from our camper there) but the onsite store offers a lot of candy and junk stuff. The assigned cabin for this season was heavily populated with spiders and none of the cabins have a/c. As a result after we returned home a visit to the doctor was in order to take care of the many bites that resulted. Given the cost of camp the cabins should be properly exterminated. The single session is five days. During that time every effort should be made to give the parents peace of mind and the camper a fun learning experience-this didn't happen. My daughters have camped at Riverview over the last 13 years and absolutely love it. My 10 year old will be a 6 year camper this summer. The Directors and staff are outstanding and very well trained. They have an array of activities including things like ropes course,horseback riding, archery and canoeing. It's a solid healthy away camp for your daughters. They will love every minute of it! read more
