What a awesome place to visit while in Johnstown Pennsylvania. The rink is home to the Johnstown Tomahawks and the old Johnstown Chiefs and the movie Slapshot was filmed here with the Charlestown Chiefs. The ice is perfect to skate on the lockerooms are nice and they are very clean and the seats are very nice. there are also snack bars around the arena to stop and eat at overall it is just a amazing rink and I would recommend visiting it while in Johnstown Pennsylvania. read more

I've been here on multiple occasions throughout my life. I've seen many a hockey games here when Johnstown had a team. My most recent trip here was for the Kelly Clarkson concert. Typical set up for a smaller sized arena. Vendors selling everything from beer to pizza line the walkways under the seats. Great sound for a concert venue. Not sure the last time my ears were ringing like that from a concert I went to. Only downside is the seating for a concert. People in the region can be pretty rude if you stand up to see the performer. God forbid I can't see what I paid for. It's a good arena, just needs a new tenant to occupy it for the time being. read more

Disclaimer; This review is specifically for amateur ice hockey events at the arena, and is from the perspective of a parent of a youth amateur hockey player. Arenas like this one you would think would be super cool to play in and, as a spectator, to watch. But for youth hockey games where the fan base consists of the parents and siblings of the players, the opposite is true. The seating is arena seating and you feel very far away from the game, and it feels empty since attendance is maybe 60! Most food venues are closed, although this arena had one open but it sold churros and hot dogs that appeared to be spinning on the heating do-hickey for way too long. They might have coffee but I didn't see it so could not say whether its fresh or in a machine. There is also no pro-shop here to help with any equipment malfunctions. The rink recently got a facelift due to winning the Kraft hometown competition (which also lead to the Penguins playing here earlier in 2015 which is very cool.) The rink is brightly lit and the score board functions perfectly. The rink also has a lackluster museum to immortalize the Slapshot movie which was filmed here in the 1970's. Parking is limited. There may be a parking garage nearby but for youth hockey games on a weekend, even with limited parking, I've never had trouble finding a spot. Bottom line - As a venue for youth hockey, this is not a good choice so I'm giving it a three. read more

As a diehard Charlestown Chiefs fan, I made a pilgrimage to Johnstown from Richmond, VA last weekend and had a blast! The War Memorial is situated in the heart of downtown Johnstown and easy walking distance from major hotels. It's a small venue seating 4,000 but has benefited from some remodeling in the past. The walls were adorned with lots of veteran memorabilia from the local area. Small Slap Shot "museum" with some signed photos but nothing to write home about. Personally, I think they could push the Slap Shot theme a bit more as it's still quite popular with sports fans everywhere. Seats were great and reasonably priced. Beer selection was fair but what the hell...it's hockey, right? So, if you are a Slap Shot fan and haven't been to the War Memorial, what are you waiting for? No more hockey, but plenty of Larry The Cable Guy, Skynyrd, and Christian rock groups to fill the void! This place blew my entire life, and even if the Chiefs still played here, they would only be worth another star. This place is also despicable as a live concert "venue". The acoustics are garbage, everything rings out forever, and the crowd is generally more confused than a truck full of cows being led to slaughter. read more

Not a bad place, since they updated it in 2015. The staff is very nice, I've done events there and they treat us very well. I will say parking is hard to find. I'm not even sure if I was allowed to park where I did. I didn't get a ticket, so I'm not going to complain! read more

I recently went to the Bill Cosby show. This guy was so funny. Thats about the only good thing I can say about the War Memorial. I showed up that night to a WOODEN CRAPPY CHAIR that was stacked so close to similar chairs which gave you no room to move. Talk about uncomfortable. You can tell they stacked them in at the last min. The seats had to be no bigger then 7 inches wide.....wooden and extremely uncomfortable for a 2 hour show. Don't even think of a bathroom break because there was no room to get up and move between the aisles. Its been over 24 hours since I've seen the show and my back is still killing me. I'm 28 and I shouldn't be having back problems! ha. Sadly we had floor seats and pretty close to the stage Worst experience of anything I went to. Nothing like going to the Chiropractic after a show. Never saw that one coming. read more

It needs some improvements but over all is a nice place. I basically lived there whenever they had the Chiefs. Been to two Tomahawk games and a few concerts. read more
