I attended this church for many years and it used to a great church that cared about God and the community. However, in the last couple of years this church has forgotten what it is the church is supposed to be. Under the new Senior Pastor, Peter Smith's leadership, two staff members were fired or asked to leave by certain dates. Both of these staff members were Godly people who had done nothing to deserve this treatment. When I asked why the church let these staff members, one of them a pastor, go, I was told that they could not disclose that information. The church has resorted to shady operations and is running church like a business rather than a place to encounter God and serve others. Calvary Church used to have deep ties to a church in Sudan and did a lot to help that community, but under Pastor Peter the connection has essentially been severed. Calvary has always taken an Advent Offering around Christmastime to raise money for the less fortunate, but they chose not to do so this year. Pastor Peter's sermons are fine and Biblically grounded yet lack any luster or real authority as the higher up church leaders do not appear to be living out God's love with their staff or with the less fortunate around the Trumbull area. I believe the church should take care of the orphans, the widows, and the marginalized and although this church dedicated a significant portion of their budget to "missions," they have not made service a priority. Giving money is not enough; the church should provide Missions trips, and local continuous opportunities to get involved with the community and help people. Unfortunately, Calvary Church has become very concerned with Discipleship and fancy Bible Studies and youth groups but seem to forget that Jesus came to serve, and that we are called to do the same. read more
