For the life of me, I can't skate laps without looking a total putz.
I mean, I know I have zero grace when it is asked of me to balance on a thin piece of metal that is capable of slicing skin. But, when the realization is turned into embarrassment that is handed to me when I see tykes, perhaps3 years old, skating circles near me, on purpose, I get dismayed.
I came here for an open skate with someone who is a natural on skates (supposedly, she came outta the womb with a skates on, which saved her mom money due to the c-section ((her joke, not mine)) who was super patient with me. The process, get your skates first, then pay for admission seems backwards to me, but whatever, be ethical. Skate rental was 3.50.
(this warrants its own paragraph)
When I got my skates, there was a pretty gruff GrayHair there. He was there, not really wanting to work and annoyed with the children and parents that came, and wanted to be sarcastic with me, which was fine. I asked my skates and he had a couple of pauses before asking me for my boots. I gave him one, he gave me one skate. I asked for the other (doing my best Oliver Twist..."'xcuse me sir, may I have 'nother?) in which he said, "well you gave me one of your boots," complete with an eye roll! When returning my skates he noticed the ice shavings on my back and side and said "amateur" (five stars for this grumpy GrayHair) as I returned the blades. It should also be noted, that you should tie the laces together, so please do so.
It was only 5 bucks for an open skate for 2.5 hours. The ice gets pretty beat up, but that's expected. I didn't check out the foods since it smelled typical deep fried psuedo-delicious. The bottle of water was 1.50 for one of those don't-grip-too-tight-cos-you-may-break-em Ice Mountains. Overall, the place ain't too bad, but, just like skiing, be prepared to have little kids be WAY better then you if you go. read more
