Came by last Saturday afternoon when Forma Pasta Factory, around the corner, didn't have any tables and I hateeee to leave a bad review but our food was not great! I ordered a spicy margarita which was great! The guac & esquites was really good as well but that's about it. I got 2 steak tacos and 1 pork taco and my boyfriend got a steak burrito. The steak was over cooked and tasted like straight black pepper. Like whole black peppercorns. No other flavor besides that. It came with some lettuce and like strips of tortilla chips? Really dissatisfied. The pork taco was okay, nothing special. A little dry. My boyfriend's steak burrito had french fries in it instead of rice and beans, which we found odd. I would find french fries in a Greek gyro but not a Mexican style burrito? I don't think we'll come back. 3 stars for the marg and apps tho! read more

I'll be quite honest - over time I have passed Calexico a thousand times and each time thought I bet that place isn't what it appears to be. Well, last Friday was the day that we finally decided to give at least happy hour a try. Upon entering the restaurant at like 6 PM it was pretty darn busy but luckily we got a spot at the windows seats - which I'm a huge fan of. They run a great special for happy hour - 2 for 1 house margaritas frozen or on the rocks. He ordered up two on the rocks and they came out pretty quickly. There is nothing fancy about these boozy well-made margaritas. I mean there is no foofy fluff stuff to them they are just damn good baseline margaritas. Onto the cost - two margaritas cost $20 but remember they are 2 for 1 so in theory it's $5 a margarita that a super good deal if you ask me. With each order you get a token for your "free" drink and they can be used anytime past happy hour or even during another visit. We decided to try some guacamole since we were watching everyone at the bar eat it with each drink order. It came out fast and with a pretty large portion (but then again for $11 it should be a large portion). The chips were thick and crispy while the guacamole had a lot of flavor - I found it quite impressive. Overall, for the first experience I was pretty happy with Calexico. We did sit next to a couple who used to live in the neighborhood and they RAVED about the food so I think we will be returning for more margaritas of course but also some food. read more

I have to say... that I can count on one hand the times I felt this disturbed about the operation of a restaurant that I actually was raving about AND highly recommended to my friends since I happen to live in the community. First, the hostess was so sweet. Typical of the service and vibe that this place has. However, we waited 25 minutes - no problem. We waited by the crowded bar. No problem. All is well. All is understood. The place was worth the wait. Except - bartenders were terrible. Amateur hour. Come on toots. You angry at me when I'm dropping a hundred bucks on a bar tab. No. No. No. Just because you carefully curated that look behind the bar is false my man. The other gal at the bar was just as amateur - slightly curated hipster look with the nasty attitude. Then our table came. The waiter was amazing. This is why we need to carefully write reviews. These people who are waiters are the people that the owners of these places should look to when they want professional people representing the owner and chef. BUT..... Manager some lady came by and was practically scolding me - united airlines style cuz we took a seat and she had to bring my finalized bill to the table. Nah. Amateur hour. Not nice when I you're talking to me like I'm some ghetto idiot. Not nice. Made the entire table after 140 bucks feel like we didn't even belong there. Let me tell you all something. The last time I was there I was given a poker chip by manager who was sooooooo nice. A gentlemen who I regret was not there. Bar tender when I first moved there was so fudging nice when he heard I was having a CRAP day and bought me a beer. But actually these were toasted right with the most savory flavor that changed the after taste and it had a little spicy kick to it too! Sometimes you have to endure a short wait, but the staff is always welcoming which helps. House margarita is ace and I didn't go wrong with the enchiladas. (Not too much sauce and cheese, for once!) I had a bite of the quesadilla - it was delicious and prepared well. The outdoor seating is where it's at when the weather permits! I've been coming to Calexico now for a year, hands down best Mexican food in Bklyn. First I always start off with chips with salsa and guacamole. The guacamole is super fresh and tasty. I highly recommend the Baja Fish Tacos with EXTRA crack sauce. These tacos are so delicious and fresh. The crack sauce has just the right kick. I also recommend ordering the beans with cotija cheese as a side. The beers on tap are awesome. Overall great Mexican grub. read more

I always came here during the summer months because it is close to mi casa and its easy for my friends to get to. They have great drinks. I have sat at the bar for hours and not even noticed. Cool vibes. The food is actually pretty solid. The lunch box is truly the best, you get 2 tacos and chips and guac, rice and beans or salad for 10 bucks. The workers attitude however, that changes depending on person, shift and day. Today was the first day I encountered a dry bartender. He definitely should have taken some shots. One monkey don't stop my show. My drinks and food were still great. They get one star off because they should know people order more and tip better when the staff actually want to be there. read more

Great menu for omnivores, vegetarians, and all other assortments of eaters. 2 for 1 margaritas on a Saturday evening can't be beat. You're going to wait in line for a while at this popular restaurant, but again, find comfort in those tasty margaritas at a great price. The food here is great and if you don't want to wait, have a seat at the bar for dinner (beware though - the bartenders have a tendency to mess up your orders and compensate with free crappy drinks). The soft tacos are definitely the way to go and at $4 a piece, it's the best method of sharing. My favorite was the pull pork. It was juicy and moist - not what you expected at a non-bbq place. Came in after a Yelp Fit event. After sweating all that we kind of felt guilty going in Calexico and eating lie we normally do. Thank goodness we saw Peter D thinking of the same thing we were lol. I felt better. We got their guacamole and chips. I enjoyed it very much and couldn't wait for our burrito bowl which came in as a wrap. The server didn't have any problem sending it back to the kitchen tho. A super plus on service. The burrito bowl came in a bowl (duh!) with grilled meat (I chose steak and Bf got the chicken), rice, beans and salsa. Although it was edible, it wasn't mind blowing. I was actually looking for something else like it's lacking something but I cannot pinpoint what it is. Would we come back again? Good ball did say it's a definite yes. This place is *almost* more of a bar than a restaurant.. but I came here by myself before shooting video for a band (Fifth Nation, from Brooklyn, NY, check them out!) at a nearby venue. I was craving tacos... I came to the right place. If you look at my other reviews, you'll notice a trend.. I seek out very authentic Mexican places, or places that can serve up authentic-style tacos to the best of their ability. This place... is not authentic... but their tacos are GREAT! I sat at the bar, and ordered a ton of food. I hadn't eaten all day, it was late, and that was the only thing I'd be eating all day. I got the carne asada burrito, grilled plantains, and a fish taco to top it off. Oh and a Jarritos mandarin orange soda. The woman bartender was very nice, and talkative. And tolerating of my photo-taking. (: I can't remember her name (because I'm TERRIBLE with names... just the way it is...) but she was very pleasant. She was from Scottland, and had an interesting hybrid accent. The customer next to me told me to get a fish taco after I had said I didn't think I could really review a place that has fish tacos without getting a fish taco.. because I love them sooo so much. The burrito was amazing. Big, loaded with nicely-grilled beef. The guacamole is delicious, and, ugh, it was just very, very good. The grilled plantains were great! I've never had them prepared quite that way. It doesn't say "grilled" on the menu, so I was expecting plantanos frites. I was pleasantly surprised. Now comes the fish taco... BIG piece of fish, beautifully beer-battered, and the chipotle sauce they use is fantastic. MUST EAT! As the newly crowned Duke, its my duty to tell all my peoples how awesome Calexico is. My go-to spot for Mexican in Greenpoint. Can get very crowded on weekends for dinner and expect a wait with a larger group. I take out frequently and ordering via phone or their iPhone app is quick and easy. Food is always ready in 10 minutes and I love that they give you Choula hot sauce packets to go. As for the food, probably the best and freshest guac I've ever had, but it won't come cheap at $9 with chips, but worth it. The elote as a starter is amazing. I've never been let down by their burritos and burrito bowls. Just the perfect sized--not overly large but perfect mix of meat, rice and beans. Don't forget the beer and a tequila shot combo for $6. Best deal in Greenpoint. I don't know what tequila they use but it always goes down smooth. read more

I've passed Calexico a few times since going up and down Manhattan Ave, so last weekend as the nephew and I were finally sick of donuts, we decided to get some live food and this was the perfect spot to do so. I had the fried tofu taco (can't recall the exact name) with rice and beans. Yooo, the rice and beans are so good! I was expecting some kind of standard version, but this was Top 3 rice n' beans I've ever had. Yeah, that good. The taco wasn't as good as I expected, but it was made well and was tasty enough, especially the chipotle mayo sauce. The young man had the Union Street salad with grilled chicken (he gorged on more donuts than I did!) and truly enjoyed it as well. I wish we tried the guacamole (don't recall why we actually didn't), but while there I looked over the happy hour bar selections as I'm planning to return soon to try much more, including the burrito bowl. I'm pretty sure they have a backyard too, so that may be worth checking out. read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in NYC, maybe even of all time. Used to frequent the UES location but recently moved so Greenpoint is more convenient. I like this location even better. The vibe is perfect - not trying to be high end but also nicer than just a bar. The food is absolutely amazing. You need to get the fish tacos! And the guacamole, of course. Solid flex mex. I have been here at a few different points in the day and on different days of the week (...I am a Baja fish bowl fan), and I have never seen the space less than half-full. The bartenders are friendly and will gossip with you/let you talk about your life, and you can even order your "takeout" to the bar if you want a quick meal complete with a beer on draft (Lagunitas). I am giving this Calexico three stars because it verges on fast-casual with the price of a better restaurant. Also, if you visit during peak evening hours, you probably can't be seated right away, even at the bar. Try anything with a side of extra crack sauce. read more

The fish tacos are great, and the guacamole is pretty good too. The black bean tacos are probably my favorite. Tortilla chips are the perfect amount of greasy + salty. The servers here are friendly, although service is sometimes just a tad bit slow (so I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're in a time-crunch). read more

Last night I was headed to a concert at Warsaw (on Driggs) and looking for a restaurant nearby. My friend was looking for a reasonably priced restaurant so I suggested Calexico (I have previously been to the Park Slope location). At 7:45pm on a Friday there was a 25 minute wait for a table for 2, but we snagged two empty seats at the bar immediately. We both loved the Jalapeno Mint Margaritas ($11) and they were pretty strong For dinner I got the Chipotle Pork Burrito bowl, which at $11 is quite a steal! It is filling and delicious, I particularly like the pickled red onions they place on top. You also have the options to add jalapenos, guacamole, etc. to make your bowl however you want it. The service at the bar was quick and our server was friendly. I would head back to this Calexico location. It is conveniently located near the Nassau Ave G train and not too far from the Bedford Ave L, about a 10 minute walk. read more

Two main issues; 1. The girl that answers the phone is consistently rude and short to me whenever I call. Makes me want to cancel my order. 2. They took away their best item, the mole burrito. I can't imagine that it sells worse than all of the other ones they offer. It's available at the truck in SoHo and I've been multiple times where they're sold out of it, but not the other burritos. read more

New Calexico food stand to be coming on May 9th. Half a block away from Eataly and 1-2 blocks away from the 23rd St station (R,W). Said to be open Monday through Friday from 11am into the evening hours. J and I had a sneak peak at this cart on Saturday. We had a taco each, Carne Asada and Chipotle Pork was absolutely amazing. It was my first time here and I really enjoyed the food. They had a 2 for 1 margarita happy hour before 7, along with some other options. The margaritas were refreshing and sweet. I had the Carne Asada bowl with Mexican rice. I wasn't a fan of the crispy tortillas on top. I normally love textures but I just didn't like it. I'd probably take that off next time. Everything was tasty, the bowl was a great size and filling. Definitely worth the price. Yummy yummy. It was pretty busy at 7pm so we got a seat on the side by the wall. I'd definitely go back. I went to the Greenpoint location and there was a hip crowd there. If we didn't take the side area the wait would've been 25 minutes for 2 people so I'm glad they have the seats on the side cause I was hungry! Also, the taco prices are for 1 taco. Decided to give Calexico a shot for lunch. The restaurant is not huge in size but good enough for small groups and couples. The restaurant is dimly lit but I personally like that for dinner and drinks. They also have a bar which appears to have a good selection of drinks and specials but I didnt get to really check out all their options. As for the staff, I most say they are very welcoming and friendly. This is a big plus for any restaurant. Since I came here for lunch I ordered two steak tacos to go. They were prepared fairly quickly which was great but could not be a good sign of something made fresh. Well regardless the tacos tasted good and I've had similar tasting ones at other locations. I wouldn't necessarily say there was anything extraordinary or over the top but I did enjoy the food. I plan on coming back for dinner and drinks soon to see what else they have to offer. read more

Whoever thinks that this place is great has clearly never been to a Mexican restaurant, tasted Mexican food or met a person from Mexico. Calexico is trying SO HARD to recreate the authentic Mexican restaurant experience that it's a little pathetic. I walked in with two other people and was seated in a tiny two person table with an added seat. So imagine three people sitting at a table with room enough for one. The restaurant is virtually empty. I ask the waiter if I can put a second tiny table that is next to us next to the one that we're at. He says "No" and walks off. Great customer service! Thanks, hipster waiter. Can't wait to order and hold all my food on my lap. The food was meh. Guac was a joke. Tortilla chips & salsa were good but clearly not homemade - I can buy equally good salsa in a jar at Whole Foods. Tacos and quesadillas - again ok, but really not amazing. Nothing was above average except the prices. I really wouldnt come here if youre interested in good Mexican food. Go into East Williamsburg and you'll find plenty of amazing Mexican food without the attitude. A decent attempt to recreate California Mexican in NYC. Far better than the average Mexican in this town but would be at best be considered fair if it were sold in the Golden State. To be fair I think California Mexican is perhaps among the toughest to emulate in these parts do to the simple fact that a huge part of what makes it so unbelievable out there is the incredible taste it is blessed with by including FRESH California avocados, which obviously aren't available here. I do like the fun atmosphere & cool design of this location and well as the tasty margaritas. Decent happy hr specials. My roast pork (carnitas i assume?) taco was actually not bad. Steep at $4 but that's sort of the vibe of this place. Their house beer is similarly priced and surprisingly decent as well. The carne asada fries are good but the ratio of fry to topping is off and they need more fries (which are the cheap part of the dish really). It's sort of inexplicable they don't do california burritos (carne asada fries wrapped in a tortilla). Speaking of wrapping things in tortillas, the burritos here need some aluminum foil or paper to help hold their burritos wrappings closed. Our last visit here was just ok. The server wasn't very friendly and I feel like that has been consistent each time I have come here. We were conveniently seated right next to the door which made for a chill each time people entered. There was seating available for 4 towards the back but the lack of thought was apparent when we were seated close to the cold. There is a definite air of "you aren't welcome to stay past eating your meal." On one hand, the restaurant is relatively small, yet has a bar. Perhaps offering to move the party to the bar would encourage 1-more drinks to be consumed (therefore greater profits made) and 2-discourage the feeling of being thrown out. Can my food digest please? So, I had my "regular." Two fish tacos and the pulled pork. The food came out pretty quickly as usual. Maybe someone wasn't on their A game in the kitchen, as the pulled pork was as drippy as could be! This made for difficult eating. Although I have to say, the flavors were just as good as in the past. Who wants to eat their taco with a fork and knife. It's just not that kind of food! The guacamole is full of chunks of fresh guac which is always a pleasure to eat. The flavor is really great! The fish tacos were very good as usual. They can step up their game a bit.
