So I have seen Advertisements for Uncle Butch's Fudge for months, and I discovered it was located…read morein Knoxville, Tennessee. I was excited to visit during my visit back to the Volunteer State, and I was not dissatisfied. The store was located in a mall back towards the corner. It was a very nice store, and kind of reminded me of a restaurant with rocking chairs (wink, wink). As i walked in I was greeted by a lady who introduced herself as "Sweet T", she was very nice and welcoming. I proceded to look around the store. There was a little bit of everything. There was A LOT of fudge, there was taffy, and there was old fashioned stuff like rock candy (swizzle sticks), peanut butter candies (buckeyes), coconut candies (snowballs) and Smarties in all forms. Then the sampling began...first I tried the Apple Raisin brittle. They had a ton of different types of brittle, but this sample was incredible. The caramel wasn't as tough as I have previously had. It had an initial crunch, but it was very chewy. I really enjoyed this aspect. Also the flavor reminded me of a caramel apple, which might sound redundant but the raisin flavor and the spices were very nice on the tongue. I also tried 6 different flavors of fudge...full disclosure: Every flavor I tried, I purchased. There were so many flavors to choose from and i couldn't buy all of them. Before leaving I was introduced to Sweet Mary...another employee. Honestly when I saw "Old South Candy" I thought there were two seperate companies that were in the same space. Sweet T explained that that was the local name and "Uncle Butch's" was its online identity. Being a frequent listener to "How I Built This" on NPR, and being a rabid YELP reviewer, I made a couple suggestions in order to help their brand and to possibly expand their customer base. Their product is amazing...the texture and flavor of the fudge is spectacular and it would do well at parties or office events for snacks. It is always good to support local businesses especially when they are from your hometown.
