Barney's Bites & Beers - Special- mussels

Barney's Bites & Beers

Tucked at the end of a side street in the city centre, this little pub is not lacking for business…read moreby any means. Seat yourself anywhere (we chose the front patio) and you will be swiftly greeted in a friendly manner. Our server spoke Dutch (of course) but also was quite proficient in English, which was helpful since our Dutch is severely limited. I'd describe the food as "traditional" in that there are a variety of burgers, steaks, ribs, salads, pork tenderloins, and daily specials on the menu. They also have a create your own 3 course meal (started, entrée, and dessert) for 19.95 euros. We shared a bottle of Chardonnay for 18.50 euro and, while it was the cheapest, it far surpassed any cheapest bottle of Chardonnay in the states. My husband ordered one of the two daily specials. He had the mussels in white wine (sautéed with onions, carrots, and celery) served with 3 sauces (mayonnaise, a sweet chili sauce, and a tarter-like sauce), frites (with mayonnaise) and a salad. He didn't touch the salad (typical of him) but he polished off those mussels and frites with no hesitation. The portion of mussels was astronomically huge! They were flavorful and he enjoyed them very much. The frites were a tasty side item. I had the goat cheese salad and was thoroughly impressed with the amount of ingredients and the quality of the meal. It contained mesclun mix, cucumber, tomatoes, sautéed onions, and five large rounds of goat cheese drizzled in honey mustard sauce each atop a perfectly crisp baguette piece. The creamy goat cheese and honey mustard were perfect together and I loved being able to create my own crostini with the goat cheese, sautéed onions, and baguette. There are lots of restaurants to choose from in the city centre but I'd highly recommend Barney's! I'm so surprised I'm the first to review especially given how crowded it was on a Sunday night!

Food was mediocre at best and service was bad. Fajitas were tasty but Prawns starter was not fresh.read more

I first visited The Little One almost 18 years ago on my first trip to The Netherlands. It is the…read moreoldest bar in Eindhoven - and probably the smallest. Spacious is definitely not a word that describes this place! However, what it lacks in space it makes up for in character. They have a selection of whiskeys/malts that would satisfy most purists. Oh, and there is a lot of "stuff" hanging all over the walls and ceiling. Like musical instruments and farming tools. In here you will not find flat panel TVs or loud music like you find in other pubs/cafés. But you will find an interesting mix of patrons and one hell of a barman - who happens to be the owner. Wil Lange knows all about service - and a lot about whiskey and cocktails. He will take good care of you while you sit and chat with the locals and visiting foreigners. I noticed recently that The Little One has a presence on the internet now. They have their own Instagram account and a Facebook fan page with quite a following of loyal fans. They may brand themselves as a speakeasy bar now, but this place will always be a dive bar to me. Don't let that prevent you from visiting a place with great atmosphere and good people.

I don't even remember where I heard about this place, but it might be the original Dutch Dive bar…read more Living up to it's name, it has room for some 10 people at the bar and maybe 15 more standing. The bar is brown and smoking is not disallowed. The bartender has been working for something like 50 years, so this guy's got stories. Stop on by, but don't expect a great crowd. For the English speakers:probeer eens iets Nederlands spreken en misschien dat helpen.
