This wasn't one of our favorite meals in France, but it got the job done. After touring the…read morebeautiful lavender and sunflower fields of Valensole (replete with swarms of Chinese tourists doing absurd photo shoots), we were hungry and desperately needing a drink.
The original restaurant we had looked into in Manosque ended up being closed, so we meandered around the streets of the old city and landed on this place. The restaurant is situated, with others, around a quintessentially French square.
Our waiter was attentive, and we got our drinks and food relatively quickly. The white wine wasn't very cold and didn't taste good, but the beer was fine. For dinner we shared a "Mille-feuille" tomato and mozzarella salad, which we thought would be interesting with many layers of thin slices, but no: just a few pieces stacked together on a toothpick with some pesto and a side of greens. Not bad at all--just nothing special. The beef tartare was served with the egg yolk in its shell on top of the meat, a presentation that we hate and drives us crazy. WHY does anybody find that to be a good idea?? Anyway, it was only ok. Bread was only OK. Fries were only OK. Chocolate cake was less than OK and had more of a supermarket feel to it.
So, not a terrible meal, but not a particularly great one. Bit of a bust, sad to say. Maybe one of the other restaurants on the square is better, but bring some bug spray no matter what: there are 10 flies for every person.
