All of their amazing sandwiches come with an individual pickle that is made in-house. We shared a Chicken Cobb (Corn fed chicken, smoked bacon, avocado, blue cheese, boiled egg, tomato, red onion, lettuce & mayo on 3 slices of toasted white), The Toronto (Slow roasted topside beef, melted English cheddar, leaf lettuce, tomato, pickled hot peppers, red onion, & horseradish mayo on toasted sourdough), and The Medley (Roasted turkey breast, smoked ham, bacon, melted cheddar & emmental, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickled hot peppers & basil mayo on toasted sourdough). In America you only see stuff like that at gas stations, and even there they hold the mayo. In England, they put so much mayo on those sandwiches that it actually gets listed as an ingredient. So whereas you'd have a chicken sandwich with mayo in America, in England it becomes a chicken mayo sandwich. That's just wrong. And nasty. Enter Pickle & Rye. If this place were in Soho or South Kensington then there'd be lines out the door. True Mortlake is in London's upscale southwest and thus home to several affluent American ex-pats, but I feel like that this gem of a sandwich place is missing out on a golden opportunity by being stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It was a trek to get to even from Fulham, and I've got plenty of friends who think that Fulham is enough of a trek already. Or at least that's their excuse for never coming to visit us. This place would merely have to not completely suck to be one of the best sandwich places in London, but it's really taken the art of the sandwich to another level. The owner / head sandwich dude is a culinary school graduate who roasts all their meats, cures his own corned beef (known around these parts as salt beef), makes his own dill pickles (which are easily the best that I've ever had in England) and Russian dressing, with the result being the finest reuben this side of the Atlantic. I have been in to Albert's deli many times now for the sausage rolls and once, to introduce my husband to it. The time my husband and I dined in we had baked chicken in a red wine sauce over mash and sausage rolls. After we finished, again, we were met with a free sample of their chocolate brownie. The first time I stopped by The Alberts Deli, the place was closed as I believe it was in the evening on a weekend. They had a menu posted in the window, and after taking a look, I vowed to come back one weekend when they were open. A few weeks later I finally stopped back to give the deli a try. Unfortunately, at that time, they were not serving paninis on the weekends (and I am still not sure if they do), and since that is what my lunch companion and I fancied, we decided to try another place in Richmond. The Alberts Deli has a wide selection of Italian staples including the seemingly ever-elusive wide egg noodles, in addition to a small American section that was stocked with pumpkin purée (in case you have a craving for pumpkin pie!). I made note of these points in case I was interested in coming back for either ingredient. Fast forward a few months to my birthday. Since it was my special day, the middle of the week and I had the day off, I was keen to give The Alberts Deli a try for lunch. I was not at all disappointed with this decision. For lunch, I ordered the 1/2 panini and small soup special, going for the spicy tuna panini and the spicy sweet potato soup. The soup was gorgeous. It had lots of creamy sweet potato flavour, and the spice was subtle to give the soup a bit of kick, without overwhelming the delicate sweetness of the sweet potato. The panini was also a winner. Unlike spicy tuna paninis at some other cafes, The Alberts Deli uses freshly chopped chillies to give the sandwich spice, not a few globs of chilli sauce, which I think gave the sandwich a better flavour. All in all, it was a great lunch, and the price was good too--only £3.90 for the combo. Add on one of their delicious espresso drinks (I can highly recommend the cappuccino), and you can have a round meal for about £6. If you happen to find yourself aimlessly wandering in Richmond, I highly recommend steering yourself in the direction of The Alberts Deli and stopping in for a hot coffee and a nice lunch. For me a Banh Mi should be a crispy fresh-baked demi almost the shape of a pair of lips and stuffed as full as possible with goodies. This was basically a bit of a thin baguette sliced and filled quite thinly. For £5.50 it was a bit of a rip off considering a similarly underwhelming baguette sandwich can be got over the road at M&S for £3 or so. I was very happy with my lunch, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. It is a little on the pricey side, but nice for a treat. They do great coffee too, and now I've spotted they have salted caramel syrup I am sure I will be popping in for a latte or two in the not too distant future!
