THESE ATTORNEYS ARE UNETHICAL!…read more About a year ago, I loaned a friend $4K to pay this law firm to retain their services after he was arrested on a drug charge. I had to use my debit card to pay the lawyer and was not given any information from the lawyer about what I was actually paying for. My "friend" never paid me back and skipped bail and is now wanted and on the run in another state. In the time since I paid his lawyer he stole from me and caused a lot of other problems for me and I don't want to have any connection to him anymore. I contacted the lawyer and stated the issue clearly and asked if it would be possible to refund the amount I paid. I asked him if he could charge his client (my former "friend") for the retainer, rather than use my funds. The lawyer denied my request, stating that I had paid to retain his services for his client and couldn't request a refund until the case was complete. However, despite claiming that I had paid to retain his services, I was given no paperwork to show what I had paid and I doubt I even have any legal claim to those funds if the case is ever "completed". Is it ethical for a lawyer to keep third party funds as a retainer when I have no desire to fund their clients legal defense in any way? I feel it is completely unethical to make someone pay for the defense of their client who stole from me. What I'm worried about is that if the client dismisses the lawyer that the funds I provided will just be returned to them and not me. I am very low income and this represented a majority of my savings. I am hoping that this law firm will do the right thing and return the money I paid and let their client pay for his own defense!
