Ice cream was on my mind - it is Italy after all - and appears to be just a small part of their business, as when I was inside the frantic work was satisfying the insatiable demand from locals for shots of espresso coffees.
Three staff made coffees and one focussed on taking cash.
It was a winter evening, yet lots of elderly locals sat at small tables outside smoking, shooting the breeze and sipping from thimble-sized cups of strong coffee brew that plump fingers and thumbs struggled to hold. The town has very low street lighting - almost not up to the job.
I decided on gianduia and coffee ice creams. Gianduia is a blend of chocolate with 30% hazelnut paste and is just so moreish. It was first invented in Turin way back in Napoleon's reign.
I paid first, which caused a bit of confusion, then got my £2.50 two choices ice cream cornetto. The flavours were delicious and service was with lots of smiles.
The ice cream portions were not as generous as other places I've been at the same price point so 4 star.
The town itself is not really a tourist destination; it reminded me of the words of a John Denver song: Saturday Night in Toledo Ohio is like being nowhere at all...this place was just like being nowhere at all albeit with nice ice cream and good coffee. read more
