The Kings Head is sort of nestled back along some side streets in the centre of Carlisle city…read morecentre. I suppose in that sense it's a rather hidden gem even though everytime I ventured in their it was busy. The Kings Head is a well presented, traditional style pub. Very welcoming atmosphere from staff and customers with real emphasis and passion on real ales. This is an absolute must visit if you are a lover of real ales - always spoilt for choice and they are always top notch in quality. Other drinks are available, also at a reasonable price. Great place to stop off for a couple of pints with friends, although we always end up spending longer here than expected - not a bad thing at all though!

It has beams and uneven floors and they have also added a 'beer garden' at the back which is popular with the smokers! This pub is reputed to be the oldest pub in Carlisle and is well known in the town for its well kept real ale. It has a good reputation for the quality of its beer and is in the Good Beer Guide this year too. They serve cask ales brewed locally and Mike the landlord is very passionate about it. They serve meals (except Sundays) and it is popular with tourists during the day and also has a loyal horde of locals that have been coming in for years. It is a nice pub to pop into and you can always be sure of someone to have a crack with. Staff are really polite and efficient too.

Continuing with my tour of the UK, our last dinner ended up being at the Woodrow Wilson, part of…read morethe Wetherspoons chain. If you haven't figured it out by now, Wetherspoons are known for their extensive menus, cheap prices, and liberal libations. This one was no different. The Woodrow Wilson was just down the street from our hotel and we took full advantage of not having to travel far for a decent meal. The place was packed as we walked in and our group had to split up in order to find a decent table. We joined a couple from our tour who had just ordered. My friend went to grab drinks from the bar as we waited for the waiter to stop by for our food order. I ordered the sweet potato, chickpea, and spinach curry since I didn't want anything fried or meaty at this point. Nine days of English breakfast sausage will do that to you. My dining companion ordered the Buffalo wings and superfood pasta which looked pretty good as well. The food arrived in decent time considering how full the establishment was. The place was huge and bustling on a Saturday night. The service was fine. The food was decent. Great place to grab a meal if you can find a seat.

We looked at the menu, both of us opting for traditional meals, I got the fish & Chips, He got the shrimp scampi with chips, both came with peas (What's the obsession with peas?) The food came out quickly, and it was eaten just as fast. It was greasy, but tasty. The tartar sauce with the fish was in a bottle with the other condiments.. It was Ok, but that meant I could have as much or as little as I wanted. None of that nasty vinegar for me. NO WAY. The bill was inexpensive, under 30 pound
