Came for the first time tonight, and regardless of my two bartenders, (Lucille & Devan), having never seen me before, they made me feel like a familiar regular. The food was great, the prices more than fair, and the service was professional, fun and welcoming. I had never been to Cafe Roma but it was suggested for our weekly dinner outing. Well let's just say we won't be back. The service was terrible. 3 other tables that came in after us got their orders placed before hours. The waitress took our appetizer order but they never came back to take our meal order. It wasn't until she served us a chicken wing appetizer that she took the meal order after we had to ask her. The chicken wings were okay, as was the salad, which should have had cheese on it. My friends split the Italian pupu platter which arrived steaming on the edges and cold and frozen in the middle, clearly just microwaved. I had the chicken parm with spaghetti, which was barely warm but I also could tell that it was a frozen patty that was just covered in a tasteless tomato sauce. Maybe their pizza and subs are good, but the meals we had were terrible. read more

Went a few month ago and had a so so meal. Figured we would give it another try. Bad idea. Chicken parm sub was a single frozen chicken tender chopped up and put on a sub roll with sauce and cheese. Basically a bread sandwich. The best way to describe the fries were like something you found under the seat in the car. Rock hard and cold. Sent them back and got more of the same. I'm thinking they cook them all in the morning and dip them in oil for 30 seconds before they go out. Wife's pizza was edible. Service wasn't great. If you ever order pick up ....... pay attention to the back room where they are making the food. Head chef takes mozerella cheeze out of a container with his bare hands ...... without using gloves. I know its going to be cooked after that which probably will kill the germs, but I'm very particular about my food. Also it just does not look very clean where they make the food. Always wiping their hands on their apron then prepare your food. Kind of disgusting if you ask me. Pizza is small, floppy, thin crust but taste is good..... considering all the above. I forgot about this place but decided to give it a try this Friday night. I guess I may forget about it for good now. There were 3 of us. We decided to be pretty plain an simple, we got beers, salad one ordered a pizza, one ordered fish and chips one a burger. The waitress was very friendly, it all ended there. I think she doesn't want to come back because she doesn't want to say how is everything here. I can pick many frozen pizzas that are better. Perfect. First visit. Kitchen had closed before we walked in. They promptly sat us anyway. Sara (who was fantastic) suggested the fish and chips. Freshest and best we've had in years. Delicate beer batter - light with a crunch. Huge portion with hand cut fry's. Delicious. Fresh homemade slaw and a great mixed green salad with an excellent blue cheese dressing. We walked in and the waitress/hostess was rude. The atmosphere is really awful; small and kind of dirty. We sat down and waited a little bit before the waitress came to take our drink order. We ordered all waters with lemon. When she finally brought the waters, none of them had lemon. Then she said she would be back. The menu didn't have anything all that appealing but we figured we would give it a shot. There are only about 6-8 tables in the entire restaurant and she would walk right by us to other tables with no acknowledgement. We were there about 10 minutes before we gave up and left. At that time, the waitress came over to ask if we were leaving and what happened. A little too late. We will never be going back and honestly I wouldn't suggest this restaurant to anyone. read more

I would come here all the time growing up. It was my grandparents' favorite restaurant and I loved it too. This was my family's go-to spot any time we went out to eat. The staff was great then, too. Unfortunately, I just feel like this place isn't what it used to be. I will only get takeout here now out of convenience to how close it is to my house, but it's never my first choice. read more

Nice quaint restaurant in New Bedford's far north end neighborhood of Sassaquin. A split level set-up, where the upstairs section is always open. The lower half depends on how busy it is. There is a bar and tv's; also popcorn popped fresh. Sometimes you have to ask for it or you may not get it. Menu consists of steak, seafood, chicken, pizza, and daily specials. They used to have a prime rib special offering of 3 various cuts. That is no longer in place. Now, the prime rib is one size, not particularly large. All in all they give a great deal for what you pay. Food is usually good to very good. read more

Abner and I stopped in for a quick bite before grocery shopping. A few years ago, we had gone for dinner and wasn't very impressed, but we decided to give it another try. It's the kind of place old people like because a lot of things come in little dishes. My sangria was boring. We split a Cafe Roma pizza and a prime rib sandwich. The pizza was tasty with sausage, ricotta and tomatoes. We liked the pizza more than the sandwich. The sandwich had some fatty pieces in it. The fries were good though. I saw some fish and chips going by and thought that looked good. Service wasn't so great. The servers were congregating near the cash register. Overall, it was just okay, so I have to give it a Kravitz score of 3. read more

I like it here, although it is a little hit or miss on food. We have eaten here enough to have found the hits. We live close by so we normally walk there in the warmer months. The clam chowder is awesome and they give you bread to start. Not a fan of the pasta sauce but the pizza and chicken is fabulous. The "good" waitresses allow us to sit downstairs with our small kids when their busy, so their random volume level changes don't disturb anyone else's dining. experience. read more

Quite literally within walking distance, this place has only gotten better over the years. The current ownership is wonderful and friendly. Their takeout is quick and always piping hot. Not a huge fan of their pizza, but their subs and grinders are superb as is their Chicken Parm. read more

Just ate there and while the food has always been decent the drink prices can change from bartender to bartender. Also, over the last three times I have been there I was charged for more drinks that I actually had. Last time they tried to charge me for two more drinks then I had and tonight they tried to charge me for one more drink then I actually had. I told my wife before we went in to watch to make sure that I was not over charged. I actually marked the number of drinks that I ordered on my place mat and showed her the amount when we were done and sure enough I was charged for one more drink then I ordered. Also the price of my drink increased by $1.00 from last week. Just sad that they consider their customers to be stupid and they try and take advantage of them. Just sad! My boyfriend and I had heard great things about this restaurant. We heard it was a "hidden gem." We went with high hopes, but left very disappointed. The food had very little flavor, other than salt. My boyfriend had cod and stuffed shrimp. The seafood tasted like it had previously been frozen and was not local. It was way over cooked and sitting in basically a stick of butter. Seriously disappointing... bad seafood in NEW BEDFORD... a place known for its local fisheries is unacceptable. I had a steak with blue cheese and onions. I was expecting blue cheese crumbles and it looked like they just poured some blue cheese salad dressing over the steak. I asked for the steak medium-well and it was like a ROCK. Disgusting food, my boyfriend and I both feel sick now. We will NOT go back. Service was OK and decently attentive. They can be hit or miss on some food items. The subs are great and come with fries. Almost all their meals come with salad or soup, garlic bread, veggies and they are very generous portions. I stick to the Italian meals and usually have a good success rate. If you want to fill up at a good $ this is the place to go. read more

Everytime we come here we order the chicken parm sandwich with fries. Definitely recommend. Their pizza is also very good.

Having lived in NewYork for fourteen years, Washington, DC for ten years, Boston for nine years and the remaining 33 years (half of my life) in New Bedford I can honestly say that Cafe Roma is the worst Italian restaurant I have ever eaten in. I would also add that I am of Italian heritage so I am no stranger to Italian food. This being said, I have to add that the most disappointing aspect of the evening was the attitude of the waitress and the final kick in the teeth was the fact that I thought that she had forgotten the bread and when I asked about that she responded, "That's an extra charge" --- with an Italian meal -- with tomato sauce -- bread is an extra charge!!! So if anyone out there ever sees me walking in the direction of Cafe Roma please call an ambulance immediately because I must have suffered a breakdown. Jim C read more

After seeing the two previous reviews, we were excited to try Café Roma. It's not so far from where we live and I have always noticed lots of cars outside. When we got there on a Friday night, most of the cars were for people at the bar. We were very disappointed in our dinner. The bread was mushy white bread and the eggplant parm and sauce were horrible. The red wine was almost undrinkable. The only saving grace was the fish in the seafood casserole, which was passable. The stuffing was bad and topped with gummy mozzarella. We didn't try the pizza, but I didn't notice anyone around us having it either. I won't return. read more

Use to go there a lot with my family as a kid, recently got a seafood platter from there that was so disappointing it was embarrassing. The family salad was bigger than the platter. Being a resident of New Bedford Massachusetts I thought we were blessed with fine seafood but after trying to get a $24.99 seafood platter from cafe Roma I've been proved wrong. The $8.00 family salad I purchased was bigger and more filling than the platter, the platter offered the smallest piece of fish I've ever seen, ONE tiny baked stuffed shrimp, 5 BAY scollops about the size of a nickel... French fries that probably came from the day before. Plus the great burnt toast garlic bread with a side of mediocre cole slaw. Basically the entire dish was something I'd expect from rural Montana ( if ordering a seafood platter out there) but considering where from one of if not the biggest fishing port in the world it's embarrassing read more

Cafe roma is terrible. I decided to give them a try after i saw a review in the standard times. I ordered take out for my wife and I. We ordered the scrod dinner for my wife, a burger for me, and a pizza for my son. The pizza was the worst pizza ive ever had it was dry, thin, and tasteless. My burger that i ordered medium rare was well well done and missing toppings. But the cherry on top was my wife fish was raw barely cooked. Needless to say we called the restaurant to complain. The phone was answered by a young kid who proceeded to tell me they were closing and id have to call back the next day!! Needless to say I wont be returning to the cafe roma anytime ever. read more

They take reservations and can handle large parties. The bar area also has a nice clientele with lots of couples and it's not a "barroom" atmosphere. First, this place looks nothing like the picture on Trip Advisor My boyfriend and I decided to try this place for a quick but nice bite, hoping the reviews of good food were true. While ordering, I only wanted chicken parm with an antipasto salad. They do not allow for any substitutions or upgrades at all with their menu forcing me to order both, the veggie choices with my chicken were pickled beets, coleslaw and zucchini. I went for zucchini. My boyfriend ordered a Caesar salad no croutons dressing in the side. When his salad comes out we promptly notice bacon bits on it (odd addition). My boyfriend has an anaphylactic reaction to meat. I got the waitress and she brought out a new one. Also noticeably missing from the Caesar salad was Parmesan cheese. Meanwhile my zucchini was grilled to inedibility. You could scrape the nasty breading off my rubbery, chewy chicken. The only good thing was my antipasto salad, which is pretty hard to mess up. Towards the end of our meal my boyfriend found two bits of bacon at the bottom of his bowl. Rather than make a whole new salad the cook had emptied the previous salad and put new lettuce in the same bowl. After pointing this out to the waitress, she swore she told the kitchen it was an allergy and couldn't believe they did that. She then brought us our bill, which still included the poison salad. Great little hole in the wall place! Not a fancy place, great prices and food though. I don't see where the bad scores came from. I checked this site before we went in since we are new to the area and they must have been in on a bad night! We went on a Tuesday evening and had fish and chips and broiled scallops, both were divine! Great seafood! We returned the next night we were so pleased. We are new to the area and had a very bad meal at a place down the road. The second night we had chicken parm (excellent and huge portion) and Burbon tips (fantastic) marinated perfectly with some sort of teriyaki-ish sauce. My children got pizza and the other got smokey mountain chicken (chicken breast BBQ sauce bacon and cheese) great drinks and good prices! We will be returning as often as we can. GREAT FRESH SEAFOOD!
