Gayle and I had a nice dinner here during our only night in Leipzig. Cafe Luise is a few blocks walk (or so) from the old City and does require crossing a busy street. We sat outside on a pleasant fall day and watched the world go by. The food and service were both excellent. We went there for the brunch on Sunday and were quite disappointed. For 14€ I would expect more than this: only white breakfast rolls, the desserts were all out of cans/boxes and eggs were not available most of the time. The plates and glasses are way too small so you need to use way too Many plates to get a decent amount of food. On top of that, the coffee is bitter and the waitress gave us the cheque about 35min into the brunch even though we didn't ask for it. That was weird and made us feel unwelcome (maybe people don't usually order a second round of coffee because it is so bad and they know it)...outside seating is available and quite nice but still...go somewhere else! read more

I've been a regular here for over a year. Several times I've experienced bad service despite wing friendly with most of the staff. Tonight was the last time I will ever visit this establishment. Despite spending 24€ on food and drinks, the waitress refused to give me a glass of tap water. I calmly explained that it is a requirement by law to give free tap water to dining customers. Finally she brought me a shot glass sized water - after a 10 minute wait. Then, while paying, I offered a tip and the waitress refused saying: "I don't accept tips from customers who threaten me." I didn't realize that stating the law was a threat. But this was the last straw in a series of unfriendly and bad service here. They have a great location and free wifi, but I would only ever order filter coffee here. Or just give it a miss. read more

From the outside this place looked a bit... corporate, so I wasnt so sure. Once I was inside it still seemed corporate, but there is something about the open plan layout and the low lighting at night that made the atmosphere really enjoyable. The place was very busy at about 730pm and it looked like people were having trouble finding seating later on in the evening. It is clearly very popular. The menu is fairly small, but has some good options. Dining companion and I both had pasta dished which were surprisingly good. I was expecting something that was just passable, but it was better than expected. Also, extra points for our very nice waitress who suffered through my bad German attempt before just answering in English. Overall and enjoyable experience. A good place if you are looking for a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere and a simple menu that will have something for everyone. read more

We went to Cafe Luise for Sunday brunch. Back home brunch is big business with some cafes taking bookings and others with two hours waits to be seated. So I was pleasantly surprised to find plenty of seats at 10am although it was starting to get really busy as we left just after 11. I've only really tried buffet breakfasts at hotels. At this one it was unclear whether you paid first, sat down, waited to be seated, as there were no signs (you actually paid at the end). We signaled a waiter and seated ourselves. The buffet started with fruit juice and extended to a range of breads (ooh white bread rolls! I always crave these in Germany), cheeses, pickles and charcuterie. Then there were yogurts, a small amount of fruit, chocolate mousse (!), and hot dishes. The hot dishes were egg based, besides soup and roast pork. Sadly there was no bacon. I don't eat eggs so i stuck to cheeses, lovely rolls, fruit and salads. All fresh and regularly replenished. And for 10€ a bargain. I would have liked to have seen some Deutsch pastries or tarts though. Australians are coffee snobs and I'm learning that if you don't want a vending machine style coffee full of froth, you need to ask for an Americano with milk. I did have a lovely pot of tea, although it cost 3.80€ but was big enough for four cups. Hot drinks are extra which we didn't mind, but would have been good to know. read more

As far as I'm aware Café Luise is the nucleus of the generally very pleasant bar/café/restaurant scene at Leipzig's Gottschedstraße. That could mean two things: either the old hand's had to stay ahead of the pack for a number of years now and is keeping up well indeed, or, having established itself at a time when competition wasn't as fierce, the pioneer could simply have rested on its laurels. Based on my one visit, I suspect the latter to be the case. Service - to get this out of the way - was fair. The quality of food and drink, unfortunately, was lamentable. The good news is that the Caesar's Salad Café Luise serves isn't of the Germanised kind, which means one is spared the tomatoes and other superfluous additions that too often spoil the German Caesar Salad. The bad news is that bacon may theoretically be a better accompaniment, but only when it's of the crispy variety and not the pale and soggy sorry sight that covered the leaves of my salad. And while I appreciate the effort to create a proper Caesar mayonnaise (which simply has to include a small amount of anchovies), I found Luise's variant far too fishy for my liking. The substandard Espresso that ended the meal cemented my view that Café Luise isn't too concerned with culinary ambitions. And if one is after cosy atmosphere and decent service, rather than above average food, that might easily be good enough. read more

I really like Luise. They have a good selection of food and drinks. The Sunday brunch buffet is not bad at all. The interior design is pleasant and cozy. There are some issues with the waiting staff. If you arrive 20 minutes before the kitchen closes for the night, the waitresses will make sure to ignore you, so you have to tug at their sleeves to place an order LOL read more
