The Brasserie-Café de la Place, in Argenton (Creuse) is where we had the only truly terrible French lunch over the course of 3 weeks. On September 7, 2012, we drove from the Paris area on our way to the French Southwest and thought it would make sense to stop in Argenton, a very pretty town worth a detour. However, by the time we exited the superhighway, drove to Argenton , parked and and looked for a place to eat, it was 2 p.m. Every eating places was no longer serving at that time but for the Café de la Place.
The point of my only negative review for this trip is, don't even think of having lunch in Argenton if it is close to 1:00 when you are ready to exit the highway! Rest areas serve better, cheaper food in a quieter environment and you won't waste 1 hour waiting to be served. As we discovered, the waitress and the cook + other persons were quietly eating in the backroom, not minding about us, who were kept waiting and hungry.
When food arrived, it was nearly inedible except for my French fries (my wife ordered green beans. They came obviously from a can and were overcooked and mushy). But the worst was the beef kabobs, made of a completely improper cut for the purpose and so chewy they were hardly edible (we don't have rottweiler jaws).
This is not all! Four streets converge on the Place de la République where the café is located, and traffic (lots of trucks and camping trailers) is as heavy as truly deafening. To make things worse, the terrace is next to a traffic light. When we finally started eating, a delivery truck parked 10 feet in front of us, motor running for the whole time we ate. In France, be wary of sidewalk terraces close to the right of way, noisy traffic might drown conversation, not to mention its toxic fumes.
Even if the food were edible, I would not recommend this location. There might be quieter ones on Argenton. Again, at 2:00 pm, you don't have any choice. Consider instead having a cup of coffee in Argenton if you were wise enough to stop for lunch on the superhighway. The town is very well worth a visit. The Café de la Place, at least after 2:00 pm, is definitely not. read more
