I don't mean to be harsh, but being raised in San Gabriel Valley out in Los Angeles, an area known as "the 626" where young adults are infamously living the Asian "boba life", Cafe Bubble Tea just didn't cut it for us.
While visiting Aarhus, I was a bit homesick and had a craving for boba (aka bubble tea). On our way from ARoS, I was shocked to see a small bubble tea shop seemingly out of place on Aaboulevarden, one of the largest main streets in the city.
We perused the menu on the wall and was disappointed to see most of the beverages are syrup-based. I asked the sole barista just to be sure and he said it was made from fruit-syrup; but one look at the syrup containers behind the counter, and I knew they were no different than Lollicup, Quickly's, or your typical lower-grade boba shop in LA.
Still, my craving heightened being so close to boba, so I settled on basic Boba Milk Tea. He told me they were out of milk tea. We didn't want anything fancy, so we asked if it was possible for him to make us a simple green tea with boba and no sugar, even though it wasn't on the menu. After he made the tea, he asked us which boba we wanted, leaving us slightly confused. There's only one kind of boba... Turns out he thought all toppings were "boba" and when he said they were out of milk tea, he meant they were actually out of black tapioca pearls (aka boba), and only had jellies and popping pearls left.
At that point, I no longer wanted the drink and my sister took over. She ended up choosing lychee jelly, but to her disappointment, it was lychee popping pearls and not actual jelly. Ummmm.
But he'd already made it, so I intended to pay for it. If you read my review on ARoS, then you'd also know I went through a whole payment fiasco because the museum couldn't take my card as debit. After two hours of trying to sort things out with the bank, it turned out the museum had to take my card as credit for it to go through. Cafe Bubble Tea could only take my card as debit; therefore, payment wouldn't go through and I couldn't pay for the drink. We ended up apologizing and leaving empty-handed and slightly embarrassed.
In hindsight, it was a blessing in disguise and I'm glad my card didn't work as neither of us really wanted the drink. read more
