A cold wind drove the chill of the rain straight into our bones, and we nearly piled straight back in the car to skip the stop in Trosa. We are so glad we pushed ourselves to stroll out to explore the Kutterkonfekt shop. Inside was an experience half-way between an old-style soda fountain, and a boutique coffee-shop. Artful displays of the intricate marzipans manufactured right upstairs lined almost every wall, and a table near the counter was elegantly arrayed with freshly baked confectionary. A handful of tables nestled by the large windows at the front of the shop, and most were full as we entered. We browsed the Marzipans for a moment, then wandered up to the counter to try our hands at ordering again in Swedish. The proprietress immediately picked up on my accent, however, and assisted us in English every bit as perfect as my own. We saw the selection of hot chocolates, and decided that was the best counter to the bitter morning rain. As we ordered, one table near the windows cleared, and we were able to nestle into one of the quaint tea-tables and watch as the sun finally broke out over the picturesque town of Trosa. The hot cocoa was indeed as perfect as we hoped, and the selection of Marzipans we bought for the road were every bit as pleasing to the mouth as they were to the eye. We happened in on a day of rest for the factory upstairs, but most days you can wander up the little, narrow staircase and watch the chefs and artists create the edible treasures arrayed in the shop below. The gleaming equipment was still on museum-like display, and was well worth a gander even while not in operation. All-in-all, this was a worthy stop on our way around Lake Malaren, and one we would highly recommend to anyone who gets the opportunity.

It's on the edge of the grounds, and located right off the path leading from the palace to the town. We were never disappointed with any of the slottscafeet (castle cafe) dining experiences that we had anywhere in Sweden. My daughter, who spent much more time in Sweden than me, says that restaurants near tourist destinations tend to be pretty universally good, unlike the tourism situation in the US. Because Sweden has a fairly short summer, most of the year-round business comes from locals, who won't abide poor food, so only the quality places survive. This particular place is a glass walled pavilion style building, which is perfect for a relaxing lunch. I somehow managed to miss taking pictures of this spot, but I'm posting one shot of a railroad turntable, where you can see the restaurant in the upper left corner. Also, I'm posting a couple of other pictures looking back toward the castle, and towards the town of Mariefred, hopefully showing that the location is convenient from everywhere. I didn't see a Yelp entry for the castle itself (I suspect my Swedish search skills are sub-par). So, if you find yourself at this restaurant, do not miss the castle - it's the National Portrait Gallery, as well as a spectacular building. We made one of my all-time favorite day trips to Gripsholm, by taking a train from Stockholm, and a bus into town. Highly recommended.
