Myself and two close friends, one of which is currently living in the city, had to do tonight where we went to the bar and reminisced about times past and the future. What we found was incredible beer selection, including tons of rare beersAnd microbrews, as well as a comfortable location the trend towards an English pub. I'm generally not one for super expensive beers, but I about wet my pants when I saw that they had a Westvleteren 10! I'm definitely not a beer aficionado, but I do know something about Trappist style brews. The Westvleteren 12, One step up from what they had here, is largely appreciated as the best beer in the world. The stuff is incredibly hard to find and even harder to purchase in a bar setting. It was really cool to have an opportunity to try this, in Helsinki, with a couple of good buddies by my side. Call me in the nostalgic, but at the end of the day all we really have are stories! This made for a great one. Anybody who's looking for a Relaxed setting and some delicious beer need look no further!

The bar owner is a total fan of the Texas Tornadoes and anything Texan. He's a Finn, but has traveled to the Lone Star State several times to take in the beauty, and is bringing a little Texas to Finland! I felt like this bar would be right at home in the Texas Hill Country. Around the bar, you'll find posters depicting the likes of Doug Sahm, Dale Watson, and Willie Nelson. There are Lone Star flags up over the register! God Bless Texas! The owner is a bigger Texas Tornadoes fan than I am, and I love their stuff- I thought I knew all their songs, but they've worked some Texas Tornado references into the bar that even I had to stop and think on. On Monday nights, they hold a jam session (no cover!), where local musicians get together and jam on a country/rockabilly rhythm, and crank out the jams. The best was hearing Johnny Cash sung with a Finnish accent! They have an extensive beer and liquor list, and the staff is friendly. The place feels safe, and clean. There are plenty of places to sit, along with some slot machines. They offer the national beer of Finland on draft, Karhu, but most of their best beers are micro-brews from a bit further north in Finland- amazing IPAs. The prices are quite reasonable, and it's warm inside. I had an absolute blast hanging out here, and reminiscing of Texas with the owner- he brought out his guitar and jammed out some acoustic Texas Tornado music. I'll certainly be back next time I'm in Helsinki!

There's something about the ambience in here that I really love, and so I can easily say it's my favorite bar in Helsinki. This place is the site of the former canteen for the harbour workers, hence its name, and the interior decor is very representative of its history. Across the ceiling are numerous flags from different countries, and along the walls you'll see some photos of the old canteen. The furniture is classy, old-fashioned and gives the bar an incredibly cozy feeling, more like hanging out at home than in a public venue. The bar counter itself is part of a boat hull, which is also really cool. The cocktails/mixed drinks are all great, and they've got a couple of local specialities that can't be missed, such as the Bus Island Iced Tea, a Jätkäsaari spinoff of a Long Island Iced Tea. The beer selection is pretty standard, so if you're not into the fancier drinks, you're covered. The coffee and pastries have also been good from my experience, as well as the selection of tea (although you're paying a bit much for a cup of hot water). The music selection seems to rotate every so often - for the first couple times that I came here, it was mostly classic Finnish rock. Another few times, it was Latino music. The live DJs are both wonderful, especially the one who works on Saturdays - he was making up short poems as a form of introduction to the upcoming songs, as well as occasionally whipping out a small flute and playing it! Very spunky guy, and fun to listen to. The staff are also fantastic - I didn't sit at the bar to chat with them, but they are definitely friendly and they like to converse with their customers. I think there is a large group of locals who come in as regulars here, and they've gotten to know the bartenders well. There's always a swarming crowd in the evenings on weekends at the bar, so be warned - get your seats early! It's much quieter on weekdays, but it's certainly not empty.

So I want my son to grow up awesome. I turned out ok and I'm pretty sure it's because my parents took me to places like this and let me get a taste of what the fun life looks like early on in life. It taught me work just hard enough to be able to go to places like this on a regular basis. Thanks, mom and dad. You're welcome, son. So when I see my little tow-head's eyes light up and I see the wheels of destruction begin spinning inside that crafty little mind as we approach Hernesaaren Ranta, I feel like I'm winning at this momming thing. As an aside: I write a lot about the kid-friendliness of places because I have this small person following me everywhere I go. I can't shake him. He's on me like white on rice. A lot of other people share my condition. I think we deserve to be represented in public forums. You're welcome. There is food for everyone. Let me break it down: Hanko Sushi (get the veg platter), Street Gastro (get the burger). There is Mexican and Pizza and everything in between. The bar in the middle is awesome for kids. Just push your Bugaboo (yes, if you are reading this and you live within walking distance of this place, you have one) up that ramp and take a look around at the huge, cushy, brightly colored banquettes in that giant, airy room with booze in the middle, a dj in the corner and so much space to dance with your kid you won't have to chase them around too much. What? You didn't know they have a DJ? They do. He's awesome. I am from California. I'm a hippie. I like to drink champagne. I may on occasion dance a lot with my child in this area. No one will judge. Everyone is here for a good time. Go on a sunny day, grab a seat on one of the many decks overlooking the water or hunker down in the covered bar area. Order your food, sip a drink or three, chill out to some good beats, and hope your kid naps the whole time. Enjoy!
