So I went here for one purpose: the Cacio e Pepe dish. It's been on my bucket list for years. Cheese wheel pasta- how could I NOT?! when we got in, it was small and quaint with dim lighting. Beautiful ambience all around. For starters, they give you some bread with this tomato dip. Hold on- my description is undermining it. The bread was made in house and very soft. The dip was AWESOME- had a beautiful blend of herbs, thick, almost like a tomato pesto. We asked for extra of that. The Cacio E Pepe presentation is epic- they bring the wheel with the pasta in it and swirl it in front of you so we got to witness the cheesy magic. For those not familiar, Cacio e Pepe is a very simple and wonderful dish. It is pasta with cheese, olive oil and black pepper. To serve it in a wheel of cheese just takes it to another level. The restaurant is very cute and is located in the East Village. They have a lovely garden in the back, but the hubby and I opted to sit out front to people watch. Our server was lovely and quickly took our order. We had: - Arugula salad with pear and pecorino cheese - delicious - Salad with tomatoes, cheese and a curry mayonnaise dressing that was simply wonderful - Cacio e Pepe - delicious! Did I mention it was served in a wheel of cheese? - Chicken Rollatini - very good! This place being called Cacio e Pepe lead me to believe that they should have some amazing Cacio e Pepe and it was truly not good. Didn't even enjoy it. Apparently we could've asked the server to cook it past al dente which I think would've helped it tremendously. The Truffle pasta was truly amazing, best truffle pasta I've ever had! The server wasn't that attentive and didn't really give us much information about the menu and didn't help out much. The guys who refilled our water, bought the food over to us however were amazing. They're well known for their cacio e pepe demoed in a cheese wheel. Surprisingly enough, I enjoyed their chicken roll more than their cacio e pepe. The chicken roll was deep fried and filled with chicken wrapped in ham and cheese. When you cut into the chicken roll, the cheese oozes out. It's such a satisfying moment. At first when going, I was put off by the just plain shit bread (it was literally just bad and I usually judge restaurants by their bread). I found out about Cacio e Pepe through one of those Insider videos on Facebook - you know, those 30 second ones that have you drooling all over your keyboard. A quick Yelp search revealed only 3.5 stars. Call me a Yelp snob, but that made me a little iffy. But they did have pasta tossed in a cheese wheel, so that won me over. My boyfriend and I arrived on a Monday night at around 6:30. There weren't a lot of people there. The place is pretty sizable. They have garden seating in the back, which I would definitely recommend if it's nice out. It feels secluded, so it's nice to get away from the lights and noises of the city, even if it's just for an hour or so. To start, we ordered the meatballs as an appetizer. It has a bouncy texture, which I actually kind of liked. It was just a tad too salty for me. In case it wasn't good, we decided to order only one of the things with the cheese wheel, which by the way is exactly how I ordered it, just to save everybody some time, and to save myself the embarrassment of butchering the name. Its proper name is tonnarelli cacio e pepe. The pasta arrives in a cheese wheel, where they toss right in front of your eyes. Two things I didn't like: 1. Although the menu did state it, it came with whole peppercorns, which isn't my preference (my fault), 2. The pasta was cool. Less than lukewarm, which I deem unacceptable for such a pasta dish. The other pasta dish we had was the rigatoni with rabbit ragu. The pasta was undercooked, and the ragu had tiny bones in them. Definitely skip this dish. The table next to us ordered the fettuccine with arugula pesto, which was one we almost ordered instead. I wish we did because that one looked amazing. We left the restaurant still feeling hungry because the portions are pretty small. If it was quality over quantity, then fine. I'm all for that. But Cacio e Pepe lacked both of these things. If I were to review solely based on the meatballs, I would say they could get 4 stars. But based on the pasta, I'm going to have to go with a two. (Service was great though!) Bottom line - I'm glad I had a chance to try the famous cheese wheel pasta. But I'm also glad that I don't ever have to come here again. Tip - cash or Amex only. We immediately ordered the Cacio E Pepe, My friend and I LOVE anything cheesy. So when the waiter came out with the wheel of cheese and our pastas, we were on the edge of our seats. The pictures looked great, videos looked great. However, it was a little different from what we expected. The pasta was a little cold, and it tasted a little bland for us. There was also too much pepper in the dish. We spent half our time picking out the little peppercorns. The pasta is a little too pricey ($18) for the small portions. For mains, I had a wonderful monkfish in a pizzaiola sauce served with a side of creamy polenta.. My wife shared a delicious cod served over escarole with beans. My dear friend had the Chicken Breast Stuffed with Prosciutto & Fontina Cheese, Black Truffle Sauce, Roasted Potatoes, Broccoli Rabe which looked quite tasty and from the oohs and ahhs across the table, all were very satisfied. Came here on the recommendation of a friend. Cacio e Pepe's front has a large sidewalk patio, which disappears into a cave-like interior. We were definitely unsure upon entering, because at first glance it looked like the restaurant was completely empty during dinner hours on a weekend. However, there is a fantastic garden in the back, which is where everyone chooses to sit and why the rest of the restaurant looks empty at first glance. The staff was very friendly, and in good weather the garden is very pleasant. The menu in general is pretty pricey. We went ahead and ordered the cacio e pepe special, which is noodles tossed in cheese, with peppercorns. They literally come to your table with a giant wheel of cheese with a whole in it, and toss the noodles in the cheese in front of you. It comes with massive, almost whole pieces of cracked peppercorns. The noodles were done very well - they were deliciously firm and had a really good, chewy texture. and they are definitely extremely cheesey. Way too cheesey. The peppercorns dispersed throughout were like little spicy bombs, and it was unpleasant to be making your way through your pasta and unknowingly bite down on one of them. Don't get me wrong - the pasta was delicious, but halfway through I definitely was starting to feel like I had enough. I couldn't finish, and ended up doggy-bagging the rest home; definitely a mistake - by the time I got home, the pasta had congealed into a giant mass of cheese and noodles. The runner was telling from the kitchen "it's coming, it's coming" and the server wouldn't come until 15min later that she finally decided to come to let me know that the kitchen burnt my pasta and that they were making a new one. She could have told me that since beginning. They didn't make anything to make it up other than empty apologies, they just pretend that nothing happened. I'll be honest. Came in mainly for the Tonnarelli cacio e pepe and to see the pasta being tossed around in the cheese wheel right at our table. Also, we came in because so many friends recommended this place for our anniversary dinner. Making reservations was so easy through Open Table and we came in on a Thursday night around 7:30pm. There were only 2 or 3 other tables seated at the time, but large groups came in shortly after, which filled the restaurant. We started our meal off with wine for each of us, Polpettine di carne al sugo di pomodoro e basilico (Meatballs in Tomato Sauce & Basil) and complimentary bread with what I assume was a marinara-like dipping sauce. The bread was hard and I wasn't a fan of the dipping sauce. The meatballs were just OK, but didn't have anything special about them. It was enough to hold us until our main course arrived, but it's just such a small serving for what you pay. For our main course, I ordered the Cacio e Pepe (Homemade tonnarelli pasta, tossed in pecorino cheese & whole black pepper corns) and my boyfriend ordered the Gnocchetti di patate al telefono (Homemade gnocchi with tomato e fresh mozzarella). As negative as some reviews are, I enjoyed the cheese wheel preparation and I believe you have to experience that at least once. The pasta is tossed around in the cheese right in front of you, so be prepared that it won't be the prettiest plating you'll ever see. I thought it tasted great... and my boyfriend agrees, so much that he was sticking his fork in my dish a couple times to take a bite! His gnocchi dish was just as great. The sauce is a bit sweet, but we had no issues with that. I appreciated that they gave a generous amount of gnocchi for the amount of sauce that was in the dish. Final thoughts? - I didn't read the Yelp reviews prior to reserving our table because we heard so many great reviews from friends. I wish I had though because I would have caught the warning about how they ONLY take amex and cash. Service was quick and there were multiple servers who took care of our table. None of them mentioned it at all throughout the night, which I would have appreciated. My bank was right next to the train station we arrived at to come here, so it would have been convenient enough to stop by ahead of time. We ordered the Cacio e Pepe, Meatballs and Tiramisu for the table. I actually think the cacio e pepe here tastes better than the one I had in Rome. They put the pasta in a big cheese bowl and scoop it out with a lot of cheese. It is very flavorful and I highly recommend the first-comer to try this dish. It had a real fishy taste, you know the kind you get at that not-so sushi restaurant? C'mon you know what I'm talking about. Arugula Salad- Ok so I really wish they used less dressing because the vinaigrette overwhelmed the taste of the arugula, pear and what tasted like Parmesan, a real sharp cheese. Cacio e Pepe - Unimpressive to say the least. The noodles were slimy & chewy, def not the al dente I was expecting. The sauce? Cheesy and a bit too salty if you ask me. Again, nothing impressive. Tiramisu - I'm a stickler for a good homemade tiramisu and this just didn't hit the spot. UGH. Less espresso and more cream, made this taste like an amateur made it for the first time.
