I lament the lack of good sandwich offerings in London regularly. In a city where so many of the…read moresandwiches are pre-made (or worse, pre-FILLED) I often crave the simple goodness of a sandwich that doesn't come into being until I order it. Today I arrived at Broadway Market for a long overdue catch up with a friend who lives nearby. "Vietnamese sandwiches?" I asked (though it may have come off sounding a bit more like a command if I'm honest.) "Never had one," came her answer though she indicated she was game. We wandered around crowded Broadway Market (which was absolutely heaving with people as the sun was out) until she spotted the queue at Bánhmí11. We fell in immediately behind a guy who talked about his off menu order (he takes the Quad Meat Special: sans the pate and with only the BBQ pork and roast pork.) I opted for the Cha Cha Chicken and whilst I realise that coconut and lemongrass marinated chicken is a bit of a departure from the traditional banh mi I couldn't resist. One bite in I was certain I'd chosen well. The toasted baguette held up well and the chicken was awash in complex flavours. My friend got the BBQ Squared and judging from the bite I snagged off her, that one was a winner too. At just £4 a sandwich, these babies were a steal (mine left me satiated through to dinner!) Now that I've discovered the 55 bus takes me direct to Broadway Market I know where I'll be headed on Saturdays!

Home-cured roast pork, pickled carrots, daikon radish, cucumber, coriander, red chilli, home-made hot sauce... it's all there. And it's all good. 2. Made to order goodness, none of this stale sitting sandwiches trend that London has going on all over the place. 3. They are extremely internet savvy, yet they don't have a brick and mortar shop. That's unexpected... and awesome. 4. On their website, they say: "You shout: Bánhmì11.... I am coming to eat you!" And that's funny. 5. They had a seasonal special called Op La Di, Op La Da...(It was incredible and involved steak in a soy and sake marinade, served with an organic sunny side up egg.) 6. ...and they wrote this poem to go with it: "Op La Di, Op La Da... Lala how the life goes on! Lala come before it's all gone!!" C'mon. You know that's amazing. It's so wrong it's right. 7. It's dirt cheap... for London. 8. Their card has a tube sign with a baguette going through it that says "Fill The Gap." Well played. 9.The ladies that run the cart are Hanoians and they just missed Bánh Mí so much they decided to stop whining about it (cough... Mexican food wingers... cough) and actually do something about it. 10. They are so friendly and excited to see you at the market, it kinda hurts. 11. They don't Londonize their food -- traditional liver paté is still high on the menu and the hot sauce is actually HOT! It's not complicated, it's not gourmet, yet it's still delicious in every way. Why mess with perfection?

You can get a box packed with just salads or a mix of salads and hot dishes. However, the staff packs it for you so it's a bit hard to specify exactly how much you want of each. Everything is put together in the same box so things also get mixed together. This normally wouldn't be a big deal but I feel like the hot items should be separated from the salads. Like I don't want a lasagna on my kale salad. Everything I tried was absolutely delicious and fresh, it was just hard for me to get over the mess of having everything lumped together in one box. They have quite a few beautiful baked goods and quiches as well. Based on how the food I tried was, I would absolutely give it another try. I think I just need to order differently/in such a way where I can ask for more separation between hot and cold items.

Recently when I was at Heathrow, I found it's outlet on terminal 4. It had great variety for vegetarian and vegan options in both cold and hot sections. For dessert I, tried their chocolate mousse which I usually don't find in their other outlets. It was amazing! There were lot of seating areas out this store.

Like apartment listings, what some might call cramped I call cozy. There are potted flowers and lots of knickknacks all around. Even the bathroom is cute. And who can beat a door made from a phone booth? I like being able to see what's going on in the kitchen too - it feels hectic but fun. For food, I've tried the veggie burger, lamb burger, chicken burger (my fave), and chips (always extra-crispy), and seen table-mates get the falafel and the chicken salad. The veggie burger needs something to hold it together better; it kind of became a mess as I ate it, but a yummy mess at that. The burgers really are as big as your face, so if you get chips on the side, it's enough to be a meal for two. I've also had the breakfast fry up, which is definitely enough for two. It came with egg, sausage, bacon, beans, mushroom, tomato, and toast. So deliciously yummy, especially on a cold morning.

This fun and quirky place has already become a popular haunt for many of the students from across the road. It's fun and rustic approach was bound to go down well with the mixed bag that attend Goldsmiths Uni. It mainly seems to serve up burgers and coffee and I believe they have plans to apply for an alcohol licence, which will inevitably be a added bonus to this small joint. The food is prepared in an open kitchen, meaning you can see, in close intimacy what's going on your plate. There aren't actually many places you can/want to sit down and eat in New Cross and any addition is a welcome. However saying that, it is tiny. So tiny that if there is more than 2 people queuing for a coffee you are standing in the main doorway. Due to the size and popularity, when I did venture in it was a battle and the place was simply heaving. The staff seemed really flustered and my simple coffee request took much longer than average expectations. Still saying that, I will be back. There's no comparison to it in the area and the simple menu looks like just what you need on a cosy night out with friends.

(If you're hungry, for £9.50 you can get three skewers) It's pretty spectacular when it arrives as well. Someone else got the lamb dish (which looked like a lamb curry) and that came with the same sides as with the kebab special. Given the nice weather, we headed "downstairs" which turned out to be a little outdoor area with a few tables to sit at. I love places that have hidden outdoor seating! I opted for the minced lamb kebab and the marinated chicken kebab. There's also a lamb kebab consisting of chunks of lamb meat. They were both incredibly tasty. There was a nice bit of spicy chilli sauce on the side as well. All the flavors on the plate were spot on. I can't complain about anything, except they do like to give you a lot of rice. When we left, there was more of a queue, and it looks like they do traditional kebabs wrapped in flat breads as well. Next time we go I might see if they can do the flat bread instead of the rice, it's way more my style. Not only did they have good food, but it was nice to meet some other people working around the building!
