Whether or not you will like this hamam will depend on what you are looking for. If you are looking for a pampered trip to a spa where you can take your time, you will not find it here. The reason I picked this hamam is that it was the closest to my hotel that was not very touristy. I wanted a more authentic experience. I was the only foreigner there, and the workers only spoke a few words of English, so yep, authentic all right!
I got the basic 40 lira package. Because of the language barrier, they couldn't explain the process to me. They sent me into a communal hot room with lots of basins and faucets, we all had panties on rather than being completely nude. I was left there for several minutes and used it to soap up and wash off. Then a woman came out, also in her panties, and gestured me to lay down on a marble slab. She then attacked me with a very rough loofah, scrubbing me furiously head to toe. As other reviewers have noted, this was fairly brief, only a few minutes (some have suggested they shaft the tourists with regard to time, and spend much longer on the locals). After getting every crevice, she covered me with suds and massaged me head to toe. Again, this was not very long, though longer than the loofah. Afterwards she had me sit in a sauna for about 15 minutes, then she doused me with cold water. All in all it probably only took 30 minutes total. Some people have complained about the brevity, so if that matters to you, go elsewhere. I just wanted to come out feeling refreshed and relaxed and exposed to locals, and I got all three. I don't think I have ever been so clean. When I paid, no one asked me for a tip, I offered 10 Lira, for which my attendant was very appreciative.
Another thing to note is that I have heard at the fancier or more tourist centered hamams, the scrub down is fairly gentle and soothing. That was not the case here. It was a really rough scrub. I personally liked it because I could see her just scraping layer after layer of skin off, and I could feel my pores opening up, it sort of hurt but afterwards I just felt fantastic and my skin was glowing and super soft. Definitely a great deal for what amounts to $13.50 USD (with tip!). Also, the basic package comes with a hair wash as well, but as I had recently deep conditioned my hair, I specifically asked her not to wash my hair. If I had I would have tipped her a few more lira. read more
