And for this occasion to the best whisky locale in town did we hie our wee selves once again. Sure, you can get the standard global bottlings in most big stores in town, but when you want something different, that much more special, do consider heading to Gregor Haslinger's lovely store in the heart of Sachsenhausen. He fell in love with the beautiful amber liquid while a bartender back in his uni days, and it clearly shows in the care and details throughout the store. Not much dust on any of the many bottles! Not to mention his eagerness to answer questions or simply chat about the golden stuff. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is not only the best place in Frankfurt, but one of the top five sources of all things whisky that I've been to - both in and out of Germany. Single malts, some special blends, literature, and a whole lot of friendly and deep knowledge you'll find ready to greet you in that warm, inviting wood interior. Sometimes it's just so nice to sit in one of the big leather armchairs and take in the presence of those twinkling bottles lined along the many shelves. Do a little twirl and you'll get a near 360° view of the stuff. Just makes me happy! There's no whisky straight out of a cask, but still, I like to think that if any of that Angels' share lark is true, then it doesn't hurt to take in a few nice deep breaths of air while absorbing the atmosphere of the store :) Deeply involved in the whisky community and the pursuit of continued education, Gregor regularly puts on really great tasting evenings and other such events. And a special note to all fledglings, novices, and neophytes: take heed! This place is most definitely also for you! He's especially excited and happy to help us learn more about the drink, which is really more than just a drink... The store is about helping us learn about the myths, cultures, origins, traditions, and anecdotes of the whisky whys, hows, whos, wheres, whynots. If you find yourself liking (loving!!!) the stuff, maybe he can help direct you to figuring out the reasons. Or not! We knew we wouldn't make it back to her little town Rewe in time before they closed, so it was suggested that we go here while sis was making dinner. What a fantastic place. I found out it used to be a toom market before. It is now similar to a Cora or Carrefour which you find in other Western European countries. This Rewe has a fantastic variety of international foods. A huge butcher section is also available. Nice to know.

It is by far Frankfurt's best drink market. And best place to purchase craft beer- take that Naiv. ixi has odd hours and on Saturdays is only open from early morning until around 3pm. During the week, they are open a bit later until 7pm or 7:30pm (Fridays). I used to go here back in the day to try varieties of German beer as I think Binding is gross and I wanted to try different stuff. It never failed me and had hundred of different German beers to try (mostly pilsners though). But the best was yet to come. Somewhere over the course of the last two years, this ol drink market has transformed itself into a craft beer mecca. They have put a lot of effort into stocking all German microbreweries, offering international selections, and giving customers the opportunities to try different types of beers outside of the boring pilsners and bocks (sorry, but they are boring). The best thing about ixi is that they really are putting effort into their craft beer offerings. They are building new cases, putting some marketing up, and rotating and bringing new ones in. I feel like other places, like Naiv or Yok-Yok (in Bahnhofsviertel), are kind of giving up on the scene, but ixi is going to just make it happen knowing that there is a demand for it, especially in this student ridden area of Frankfurt. You can find witbiers, saisons, double IPAs, Baltic stouts, Japanese pale ales, etc here. The staff is incredible too. They allow my dog inside and are always so friendly and extremely helpful. I can't recommend this place enough for beer lovers. (They also have wine and spirits but I never make it to that area of the drink market).

First time visiting so did not know what to expect, but came away very satisfied with the beer, the venue and the service. They have a large outdoor beer garden and a small interior with about 4-5 tables. I ordered a flight to sample all of their beers. Came with their helles, a california ale, the frankfurt pale ale, bread beer and saline bitter. The bread beer was delicious and my favorite of the bunch. Light with a nice malty sweetness, the taste has undertones of cinnamon and christmas spices. I liked it so much I took home a growler (9 euro including 3 euro bottle deposit). I would definitely come again! Excited to try seasonal offerings once winter hits.
