Also the previous year my return was delayed by a month, I was in the US and spent considerable time and energy chasing up. I was told by the receptionist that it was because of problems with the ATO, however I found that I had to do a lot of the following up even though I had paid H&R Block to act on my behalf.

I was recommended Financial Management Works from a friend who said they were really efficient. Tony Bosevski was really responsive and the whole process did not take too long whatsoever. I paid a relatively small fee and I had my tax return electronically transferred into my bank account from the Australian government within a couple of weeks. With this place I went the second way, simply because the offices from the outside looked pretty professional, and I needed somebody to do my tax. It turns out that they were pretty good, and weren't all that expensive either, so I guess I why lucky in this instance. In fact every year since I have come back because they did the job properly and managed to complete my tax return pretty efficiently. There are three partners in this office, and I must say that I found Rick to be the best as he is very friendly, quite chatty, and will always do his homework before your appointment. Sure, I only ever use an accountant once a year, and it's always good to know that you are going to get a good service with no nasty surprises. The problem is that the good ones are also quite popular, and sometimes you need to get in early.
