The prices are keen but the service can be a little erratic - bear with them! I liked that they had a website and figured it was worth a shot. It's a small shop in the front with a large back area and really approachable friendly people. There was no "air of condescension" (as in some shops) and overall just helpful advice on how not-to-kill, I mean nurture, an orchid. I walked out with two small pots in case one wasn't the right size (they were out of clear pots but had placed an order already to replenish), potting soil and mist spray. Basically everything I came for with what I considered a good price. Definitely recommend!!!

What this shop specialises in is the means to grow plants hydroponically (in water rather than soil), and/or without natural light. The range of stock is actually larger than you might think and rather interesting, including different soil replacements, some nice seeds and a fish tank which grows plants in the top (fish fertilize the plants with their poo, plants put oxygen in the water for the fish). A lot of the stuff claims to be actually rather 'green' too. Somewhere to visit if you are environmentally aware, a technology junkie, or looking for something cool for a dark corner of your top-priced Islington home. went to smiths today!!!!!!!!!I had a great experience ,we needed to get some plants for the garden…read moreand we were really sucsessful today.I was really pleased with the experience today.There were thousands of plants in the garden centre,there were a lot in the inside area and an absolute abundance of plants outside.Also all plants were well kept and very watered,actually helped me keep cool in all this heat,they obviously take pride in each and every one of their plants.Also there is so much stock of everything(plants and non-plants).This has really pleased me as I've seen some garden centres which has hardly any plants and they are all neglected.However in this garden centre,they even have Christmas trees in June,but I suppose today(the day I wrote my review)is only 6 months till Christmas Eve!!!!!!!!!But I cannot see why you can't have a Christmas tree in June if you want to.I brought 3 small ones!!!!!!!!!Also I've been to garden centres in Christmas and they haven't had christmas trees.Also they were really well staffed as well,and our cashier was polite and even offered for someone to help us load the car.Also the smiths golf thing right at the back of the garden centre looks great and I'm sure will make a lot of money for the garden centre.Also their drive thru concept to collect soil was good and very well thought out,it's like a McDonald's drive thru but you show you're receipt to staff and then drive on to get the soil.Lovely experience!!!!!!!!

It offers an extremely comprehensive range of products. Staff in the outside area can be hard to find but there are knowledgeable staff available if you need advice as I did when selecting a fruit tree for my garden. The level of customer service is high, I was surprised to discover that if you buy a heavy bag of fertiliser or compost it will be taken to your car on an electric carrier! So all in all a recommended place to go for garden supplies and products.

You can spend the whole day there easily, rhere is a cafe/resturant inside as well as an aquatic store which has a vast variety of fish, it's almost like visiting a smaller version of the london aquarium (except it's free!). Inside you'll find garden furniture galore, BBQs, water features, pet supplies, tools and lots more. At Christmas they have a big selection of tree decorations, as well as cut and living trees. What really helps to make this place special is the aquatic section - it's like a mini aquarium. Whenever we come here as a family we must go to the aquatic section to look at the beautiful tropical fish, the slimy snails and the koi carp, to name but a few. I've always found the staff helpful. If they didn't know the answer they would get someone who does. If you're looking for something for the garden, you may want to try here. I certainly never seem to leave empty handed.

The displays are spectacular and we quite often just go in for a wander round, it is very magical for the children. You will usually find Rudolph in there somewhere along with other woodland creatures, lots of Christmas trees with brightly coloured lights, well worth a visit if you haven't been before.

I ordered a mature Wedding Cake tree at a total cost of £795, the picture of it was beautiful. However, unknown to me, the tree I ordered was not a Wedding Cake Tree-but what I would call a Lollipop Tree- Stem 10 ft with a badly pruned top. HORRID I arranged to send the tree back to Hampshire Freight, paying the cost- but it wasn't my fault. Sent email to let them know where it was on 11th November. Told not to ring them, just use email. Guess what, they don't read their emails !! I am still waiting for my refund. Next port of call, the Manager. Gill P.

My Aunt was assisted by a very helpful young gentleman who listened to her and made some very wise suggestions of plants that she needed and a lot of advice on how to care for them too, and if you have bags of money, they'll landscape for you. You could create a Japanese garden or even club tropicana, as they have full-sized palm trees! Brilliant.

The prices are competitive and they do daily delivery to St Albans (other areas have 2 days in the week for deliveries). The team in the Plant Information & Advice Centre are incredibly helpful and they have lots of free booklets to help with maintaining your garden (laying turf, planting trees etc.).
