This masjid is never open! Why is it closed in a Friday…read moreevening? Are people going to pray maqrib or not? Wow! The area gets no foot traffic that the grass grew on the concrete sidewalk! Where's the so called Al Amal madrassa? You couldn't find students or what? Students lost interest in deen or what? Did owners abandons this place? Hey, if you are willing to sell the building, pls let me know! I have cash. RIBA-free right? I don't think you're utilizing it anymore! I hate to give a masjid less than a 5-star rating, let alone a 1-star. I'm so disappointed with the management!

The Islamic Center of Minnesota offered an open house on this beautiful fall Saturday. They…read moreadvertised on Facebook so being a curious citizen of the world I was excited to attend. Everyone volunteering at the Center today was so welcoming and friendly. Two lovely ladies greeted me as I entered. They explained briefly what to do next. I had all ready RSVPed online so I checked in at the next stop. I got a paper to receive a stamp at each of the informational stops along the way. The first stop was the gym where a well-spoken woman was giving a brief talk about Islam. Did you know the majority of Muslims are from Indonesia? I didn't! She took questions too and was so patient and personable. While you listened to the short presentation you could munch on the most delicious homemade sambusas, falafel, and hummus. Like super yummy! They had cake, cupcakes, tea, hot chocolate , and water too! So generous! I did things a bit out of order and went to learn about hijabs and how to wear the head scarf. Two women helped me and my friend fashion the best style for us with the scarves we chose. Then we took a shuttle bus for the tour of their mosque nearby. It's in a residential area with mostly street parking so the shuttle was a wonderful touch! The gentleman that did the mosque tour was of Indian descent. The woman who did the presentation was of Pakistani descent. The people participating in the 3pm prayers were from families of all different descent. Exactly like my Lutheran Church! So many similarities. We had to take our shoes off before entering the mosque. Then we asked general questions about religious practices & beliefs. Then they were gracious enough to let us watch a group prayer. It was beautiful and contemplative. As someone who tries to do yoga I really appreciated all of the various levels of prayer...standing, a half standing forward fold and then a child's pose. After the prayers and the questions and answers we rode back to the Center via the shuttle. The next stop was the Meet and Greet. The biggest take away from this wonderful conversation was despite their different personal beliefs, say perhaps how to wear their hijab they can all go to the same mosque to pray. Not as many different denominations per se though there are some variations. Next we went to the resource table for pamphlets on the Islamic Center, Islam, and even an English Quran. Because we personally focused on the food, presentation, and the mosque tour for so long we missed out on the henna/face painting and calligraphy station. Oh well. Upon leaving we were given carnations! I had a really great time learning about my fellow neighbors' religion and religious center. If they ever offer other community events or open houses I would highly recommend stopping by. Really lovely people! Thank you to all of the volunteers that put together such a wonderful event!
