From what I've read, the project came together started in 2003 all thanks to some of the local neighbors that were tired of looking at 163 plain concrete steps to the top of the hill. They collected donations and raised money, selling tiles, which could be customized with names, dates, phrases, anything people wanted to add to make this project come to life. It took two years of raining money, and assembly, "opening" in 2005. The steps really are truly worth checking out, for being over 20 years old, they still have beautiful and vibrant color. I would have though the sun would have faded them, but i guess the color being baked in to the ceramic tiles really holds up. The design, is very stunning, going "from sea to the star", with so much detail, so much creativity. At the top of the steps, you can hike another set of steps up to an amazing 360 degree panorama of the city. Worth the extra 150 or so steps to go all the way up. If you're able bodied, I'd recommend checking this spot out. It's free, and in a residential neighborhood, so parking is also free and easy to find.

You walk up the steps to the library & it is a decent size on one floor. The staff here were very friendly & helpful. Loved that they had books on display paying homage to Malcom X & Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They had several smart vegan books & Chinese language book titles here. By far though the crest jewel of this library is the DVD section as all the DVDs were on a HUGE bookshelf. Do you know that game how many marbles in the jar, well if I had to guess how many DVDs they had here I would guess 2,150. Yes, I would bet dollars to vegan donuts that there was more than 2,000 DVDs here yet my guess was an educated one as let me begin to explain as there is method behind the mayhem as I counted a single shelf of DVDs & counted 50 titles from there I counted how many shelves holding about the same amount of DVDs counting 43 so 43 multiplied by 50 equals 2,150. Of course this is a rough estimate yet if you live in Parkside I feel having a Netflix account wouldn't make any proper sense as the Parkside Branch Library is dialed w/ a huge stock of smartly selected DVDs. Kudos to the Parkside Branch Library for being eco-friendly at the restroom here use low-flow faucets & having efficient fixtures such as these reduce water usage by 40 percent. To give you a feel for some of the Programs on offer here this month there will be a seminar on how to write your will. The seminar will be led by an estate & probate lawyer in San Francisco who has more than 30 years experience. Other programs include a Craft Night of creating a Red Envelope to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The end of the month there will be a special children's program to celebrate the Lunar New Year w/ a Chinese Lion Dance & Martial Arts Performance. Great library in the Parkside neighborhood!

Sometimes I listen to city council meetings in Hayward. Nothing is better to put a person to sleep. All that bureaucracy and paper pushing and formality talking in circles. City planners complain that they are powerless and the state makes all the plans and forces them onto the city - but the planners can do only one thing extra to any plan to justify their salary - and that is to add public art to any given project. The city of Hayward is building these monster towers that cast shadows directly on the Haward fault - requiring no extra earthquake safety construction measures than if it were built anywhere else in California - but the one thing they love to do is add a public mural to a project. These steps are like a useful public mural. I think the Hayward city planners are feverishly taking notes on how its done San Francisco. Oh so pretty. Look at all the little tiles and grout. Lets not worry that there is one pedestrian collision with a vehicle on average every month on B St alone. We've got our art. I inspected the stairs and they are lovely. Just lovely. Clean and well taken care of and seemed to be not slippery when wet or rainy. For me that's number one. Make sure they are safe. No polished concrete - need something with a little grip to it - and it passed my inspections.

I like how it has 2 benches on the side and one long bench on the top. The stairs are at the end of California Street next door to a school so it can get very hectic during pickup/drop off hours, so I'd avoid around that time. At the top there is a trail that goes down along the golf course about a quarter mile to El Camino Del Mar where you can start the Lands End Trail or if you go the other way it takes you to Legion of Honor drive where you can walk up to the museum.

The first few floors of the library aren't too quiet, which I prefer, but the 4th level and higher are quiet study areas. There are also plenty of electrical outlets, but they are scattered throughout along the walls and floor (not built into the tables like what more modern libraries have.) I'm not a SFSU student, but was able to come here with no issues to get some work and studying done. There is very limited paid parking around the area and the free street parking is impossible to find, but if your mobile and capable enough you can park unlimited for free at the mall up the street and walk over (it was about a 15 minute walk.) There are also several muni and bus stops in the area, so public transportation is probably more ideal. I like getting my steps in, so I parked at the mall and walked over. There is free guest wifi in the library for non-students. You just need to sign up for it with your name and email address, and the system emails you a one time password to use. The wifi is surprisingly slow, considering that this is on a college campus and I'm sure there are many students that rely on needing good internet speeds for their courses and studies.

After the renovations, this place feels more like a miniature IT campus similar to that of Apple or google. And the library gets super busy especially during midterms and finals. Surprisingly there's a Help Desk where you can get a loaner laptop, you have basic computer questions. Basically this is a good place to start for your studying needs.

But if you rode the 6 and 7 buses back in the day, you remember spying the original piece of art nearby called Silly Pink Bunny. It had all the weirdness of Bronze Bunny, except it was pink and, thus, way more menacing. It reminded me and lots of people of the weird imaginary/real character from Donnie Darko, which, fun fact, was filmed partially at my high school. Fast-forward to 2013. They're going ahead with plans to turn the old UC Extension building into housing. Great. But Silly Pink Bunny apparently had to go to make way for construction. Knowing this, and seeing that it disappeared soon thereafter, yet its artistic niche remained, I believed and started spreading the neighborhood rumor that someone had stolen Silly Pink Bunny in order to save it from destruction, à la one of those Bob's Big Boy statues from further back in the day. And what do you know? Silly Pink Bunny actually had a funeral. It was demolished in this big ceremony that included music. I wish I had been there. Or maybe I don't. I'm a little bit sad that thieves didn't steal Silly Pink Bunny. I was kind of hoping it would be found in some warehouse somewhere. Bronze Bunny is great. Like I said, without all the history, it's a fine piece of art in its own right. But it pales in comparison to what it commemorates. Plus it's not in the exact location of its predecessor. I'm so glad they allowed it to be installed here.

I'm not sure how or why, but he created The locally famous Silly Pink Bunny on the corner of Haight & Laguna. It was eventually torn down, and plans immediately started to create a more sturdy, pest-proof permanent sculpture at 215 Haight, where the Haight Street Art Center is. Over $70,000 was raised via crowdfunding & the Bronze Bunny was unveiled April 29, 2017 to a large crowd of jubilant supporters. Afterwards, Jeremy signed posters at Fifty 24, the line snaking around the block. Not going to find this on tourist maps- so impress your friends with your insider's knowledge.
