My unofficial search for the best BBQ in SC stumbled across Burly Bill's on the way back thru Marietta and TR towards Greenville. It's a trailer (with a faded Yelp decal!), usually open only Fri-Sat-Sun, and the only seating is outside under a tent. But, "To Go" is the way to go, anyway. Lots of folks do pulled pork, very few do good Brisket. NONE I have tasted in SC do it any better than Burly Bill's. $17 a pound, and it was even on special for $15 for Memorial Day. This stop belongs on your BBQ bucket list! Make sure you ask for the Memphis homemade sauce. read more

We passed through this weekend on the way to Lake Jocasse. Bring cash when you stop here. We placed our order and had to find an atm. The store next door, their atm was down, so we had to travel to get to an atm. I was telling my wife, I sure hope that it is worth all this trouble. Well let me just say that the staff here was very friendly. The food was AMAZING! In fact i would say it is the best I have had in South Carolina. Great choice! I had the brisket sandwich. Came across this BBQ stop while driving from Charlotte, NC to Clayton, GA and it did NOT disappoint. It was hands down the best BBQ we experienced while down south. Searched Yelp for good BBQ in the upstate. Wasn't sure how barbecue would be from a food truck/trailer, but was pleasantly surprised. Had the pulled pork sandwich platter with baked beans and fried okra. The pork was chunky (in a good way), the hot sauce that I chose wasn't particularly hot, but was tasty nonetheless. Sides were good as well. My partner is a vegetarian and surprisingly there were vegetarian options, as the sides don't have meat in them and are not fried in the same oil with meet. Bill is a nice fellow and we ate at the covered picnic tables out front. Overall the food quality was very good, and the experience very pleasurable. Would definitely recommend this place if your looking for good barbecue in a casual setting. read more

Being vegetarian and eating at a BBQ place is normally an oxymoron, but this place had plenty for me to eat. Only place in South Carolina that I can eat fried food that hasn't been fried in the same oil as meat. The fried okra was great and not greasy or over battered. read more

Slap yo momma good! Brisket is perfect! Not dry, juicy, nice marble... it literally melts in your mouth. Best I have had yet! There were several selections of sauces, decided on the sweet spicy. Glad I did because we guzzled it! The sides were very good too. Coleslaw wasn't run of the mill, had a smoky flavor without a ton of vinegar, baked beans weren't overly seasoned but very good! Only thing I could say was missing was a beer and corn on the cobb. Had great iced tea... every sip brought me back to my Grandmother's house. Will definitely be back already have plans! Super nice folks running the place. Last year they gave us free watermelon for dessert and had kids setup outside selling lemonade. We tried a few different meats. It was like eating a fat sandwich. While I appreciate the flavor that fat adds, it was way too much for our groups taste. Once you pulled all the fat off the sandwhich there wasn't anything left. Just the place! We had looked all over South Carolina from the shores to the mountains for authentic South Carolina BBQ. Although we ate at several places, we found what we were looking for at Burly Bills. The smoky pulled pork in chunks with some crispy edges was fabulous! The ribs were smoky, tender with a nice sauce. Four house made sauces were offered. The Carolina mustard sauce was exceptional. Awesome no frills, roadside BBQ. Stopped here after a local hike with husband and dog and it was the perfect authentic bbq refuel we were craving. Burly Bill spent time in Oklahoma where he learned to do Texas style beef brisket. I buy it by the pound in chunks for church pot luck dinners and cut it into cubes so more people have a chance to sample it. It goes fast. Bill doesn't like to slice the beef because he feels it dries out the meat. That black burnt crust -- that's the best part. He has three types of sauce and each is great although I prefer the vinegar sauce. It doesn't hide the flavor of the smoke. He also does great South Carolina style pork. Warning. Bring cash. He does not accept credit cards. Rumor is that the Swamp Rabbit hike and bike trail is going to be extended to in back of his food trailer. That will give the bicycle riders extra incentive. read more
