We talked to and got estimates from five fencing companies to replace the fence in our backyard and a gate at the entrance to the yard for our home in Santa Monica. From the first visit, Burkhardt struck us as very professional. As we moved along, we were struck by the quality of the materials and workmanship Brian, the owner of the business, proposed to use and by his recommendations regarding materials and design. In particular, we initially assumed the fence would be redwood, but Brian recommended Batu. This is a remarkably beautiful hardwood from Indonesia that is harder and much more resistant to deterioration than redwood at about the same price. We chose Brian's company and have been thrilled by our choice. The workers, supervised on the ground by the highly experienced and detail-oriented Geronimo, delivered on the superb workmanship Brian had promised. The quality of the materials, including both the wood itself and the powder-covered steel frames for the fence and gate, were without peer. Brian and the rest of the team were extremely personable and easy to work with. At one point we changed our minds about a design element and Brian and the team immediately accommodated us. I have to say that I believe the gates that were put on are going to add value to our property. They demo'ed the old fence and cleared a path to create a new gate where before there was none, they also created a rolling fence for the driveway and installed the mailbox. Luckily for me through Yelp I found Brian & Chris at Burkhardt for my tenants fence, they were patient & reasonable with this little hassle type job which I really appreciated, my tenants were having a terrible time with deliveries walking across the grass even at night, so Burhardt installed a new panel cutting off yard access, made a new panel to the left in the before photo as it was rotted out, and sanded/painted the original gate to match, plus Chris made me a lovely new Ipe wood address sign, the panel to the right in the photo is still rotted out but I couldn't afford to replace it right now and the hedge is hiding it anyway, so they did a great job of subtly blending it in. Chris from Burkhardt Custom did an amazing job replacing our old one-sided side-by-side fence with a double sided board-on-board fence (wall topper) with a cap. This fence was the finishing touch for our yard redesign and it improved the final appearance so much! Chris was incredibly responsive throughout the process which was much appreciated after struggling with communication with other contractors and companies we tried to get estimates from. The most impressive thing was how hard Chris worked to make sure the final product was of high quality. Even though we agreed to a flat fee at the beginning, he did not cut any corners and instead spent additional hours to get it just right. They used high quality fasteners and stain and helped us select boards that were the right combination of affordable and attractive. Our fence ended up being all wood, however Chris said they also do metal work for a higher end, longer lasting product.
