First time actually going to the Bun'd Up restaurant. It was practically empty but there's a self-ordering screen when you enter. I think they should at least have someone at the register. I placed my order during lunch and everything came out within 10 minutes so service speed is spot on. The cold cucumber appetizer is good but not worth the price. I would just get their buns. Taking advantage of DoorDash's 'Happy Hour', I went with the pick 3 buns (bulgogi, tofu, and pork belly), tater tots with miso ranch, and the crag rangoon. The tater tots were barely cooked and definitely not crispy (more steamed than anything, so much so that quite a bit of condensation had built up in the container). If there was any of the miso ranch, it must have evaporated in the container. The crag rangoon was missing from my order but was on the receipt (DoorDash was able to refund). The buns were pretty good. The pork belly was my favorite, with bulgogi taking 2nd and tofu coming in last. The pork belly was a nice balance of sweet and spicy, while the bulgogi had a bit too much sauce vs bulgogi meat (more tiny bits of meat). The tofu was pretty 'meh', it was a nice chunk of tofu but even the sauce didn't make it memorable. With the size of the buns, definitely take advantage of the 'happy hour' discount. If I ordered again, I'd probably just go for the pork belly. read more

This appears to be take-out focused. The seats are too uncomfortable to consider sitting in for more than a moment (while you wait for your take out order). The buns are tasty, but warning, they are VERY saucy and get really messy, really fast! They won't hold up at all well if you don't eat them immediately - the buns just become a soggy mess. You won't see a soul at the counter- just place your order from the kiosk and wait for that Aha moment when a rude human comes out with your order. Overall I give it a Meh. read more

We were surprised that it's actually two places in one; the front is for Bun'd Up and the other is for Noonchi which is another Korean Street Food/Bar area. I was so intrigued by both places that I decided to check out both places. This review is just purely for what I got from Bun'd Up. Walking in, there's merch and instant noodles and many open seats that are really colorful. I went here on a Tuesday night so I guess it was just really slow that night. There's a kiosk where you can order your food and after deciding on what I want, I decided to get the pick 2 bun option. I think it's like 2 for 10 bucks which wasn't bad but kind of pricy. I mean I'm in Arlington so everything will add up at some point... I picked the Braised Pork Belly Bun and the Spicy Fried Chicken Bun. The Braised Pork Belly Bun had pineapple kimchi, scallions, and cilantro lime mayo. Very interesting taste as I didn't really taste the kimchi at all but everything else did come to my taste buds. It was still good none less. The Spicy Fried Chicken Bun was good too. Gochujang glazed fried chicken with coleslaw and scallions makes for a very simple yet effective bun and I can't really complain. Both were delicious and it did keep me from getting hungry so it did it's job. Would I come back here? Maybe but I think Noonchi was the better pick out of the two. I messed around on it for about 10 mins before somebody came out to help but I just ended up using a QR code once I realized they were on the countertops facing the side of the restaurant. As I was doing all of this to order, I realized how hot it was inside, almost as if the AC broke. It also looked as if they were doing renovations of some sort so right away I kind of figured I wouldn't be dining in. Got my order through and waited about 15 minutes. As I was waiting and starting to sweat I was getting attacked by a few mosquitos on my legs. I moved a few times then decided to just wait outside in the sprinkling rain so I could get fresh air and not get a bunch of bites. I felt the wait time was fine but there was just straight silence in the main dining room (no music, no TV sounds) so it felt pretty long and awkward. Once I got my food, I left. This is a cute little spot located in a trendy food court. There is garage parking available within a reasonable walking distance and there are a few metered spots as well. The restaurant has a decent sized dining area with a bunch of tables and a very nice outdoor patio with seating as well. I saw a large area that looks like it could be used for banquets or private events located in the back of the restaurant. You will find a television in the restaurant that was playing some weird cartoon while I was there, and they also have neo-soul music playing throughout. The restaurant serves food that comes in gao bao buns. They also make them in the burger variety. They are kind of like tapas in a gao bao bun. It is very unique, and I am here for it. They also sell ice cream, some adult beverages, and have drinks in a cooler there. They guy working the counter was friendly enough, but I will admit, I only had limited interaction with him. Be sure to check out their daily specials. I ordered a spicy fried chicken and a spicy pork belly bun. It took about 7 minutes for them to prepare, and they were fresh, hot and delicious. I did not think that they would fill me up, but they did. They were very flavorful and tasty. I really enjoyed my meal here. I was not here very long, in and out. You can order food at the kiosk and it comes out pretty quickly. BUNS & FRIES COMBO - 13 This combo comes with two buns and a side of crinkle-cut fries. My friend and I weren't too hungry, so we decided to share it. I got a bulgogi bun which wasn't too bad. The bulgogi had a pretty sweet marinade and comes with some pickled cucumbers. Overall, it was OK, I'd get a different bun next time. The fries were pretty good, but inconsistent. There were some really crispy fries, some under-fried fries -- and then some had a lot of seasoning and some had none at all. My friend and I definitely raced to eat the best looking fries with more seasoning. At the end, we still killed the fries. Even the "bad" ones were passable. Pretty casual lunch/meal option. You order on toastab and they bring out the food. Utensils and water cups are in the back of the restaurant. We got the cucumber salad, bulgogi bowl, bao bun, and loaded tots (additional add on you want meat on top). They also have a happy hour menu with discounts on some shared bites. I love this place and the flavor of the buns. They're fun and delicious and I think it's worth a try if you're in the area. Just be prepared to need more food later because it won't fill you up. The down side: the chairs aren't friendly to anyone who has hips or isn't super skinny. But they sure are a cute aesthetic. $13 for three bao buns isn't bad, but they don't fill you up and I'd hope $13 dollars would go a little bit farther than as an appetizer. Wasn't planning on ordering an appetizer but the Loaded Tater Tots sounded too good and they didn't disappoint. Pork Belly, Scallions and the Crab Rangoon Dip was a revelation. Excellent! Got the "Choose 3 Buns"-unfortunately they were out of fried chicken (spicy, sweet soy) so we got Bulgogi, Shrimp & Pork Belly. All three were tasty with Bulgogi and Pork belly as the favorites. Prices are also reasonable. Service was friendly and order was ready when promised. Would've been good for them to post (on their site) they are renovating this location. We came to eat at Sparrow room but ended up eating here after they didn't have the dim sum I was searching for. Unfortunately Bun'd up seemed to be having a rough night on this particular Friday. It was a pretty cold night in Arlington. It was also a very cold night in Bun'd up. It seems like they don't have working heat? That paired with the concrete floors and metal furniture... well you see where this is going. The restaurant it's self was in total disarray. Cords and wires hanging over top of things. Piles of supplies out on the restaurant floor. It just wasn't the type of place I'd want to spend anymore time than necessary. I wanted the fried pork dumplings and they were out. I settled on three bao buns instead. Ordering the braised pork belly, miso chicken and the bulgolgi beef. They came out looking pretty tasty. Unfortunately the chicken and steak were so dry they might as well be jerky. The pork belly had great flavor but mine was pretty much all fat. I also found the buns to be a little too thick for the amount of food on the inside.. however the texture was great. I think the best thing we had was the tater tots with miso ranch. read more

What an amazing experience we had! My family and I gave this place a try for the first time while on vacation to DC. My first thoughts walking in was that it was such a cute little place to bring the family to eat! Have you been bun'd up yet? IYKTYK why bao buns are the talk of the town and these ones here are some you can get down with!!! There are so many goodies on the menu so while what to order may take some time to decide, you cannot go wrong with any of the options they have. The Tatertots with Miso Ranch are fantastic and worth every fried bite of goodness. The tots had that crisp outside you would expect and you should get them loaded so they will be covered and smothered with pork belly, cheese and scallions. A winning combo you never knew you needed until to take that first bite. The Smoked Chicken wings are delicious!!! They double fry them an d are chongqing spiced so there's a little kick in each bite! Skin was crispy too which is always a plus in my book. The Baos are a good deal since you get 3 for 13 although I assure you, you will want to try them all. The Korean Fried Chicken and the Fried Shrimp are the two you have to try, both filling and flavorful. Lastly, the BBQ Fried Rice is a meal all by itself. Think fried rice with meat sweats that has a smokey taste to it. For my sammie lovers and probably my favorite thing on the menu is the Smoked Fried Chicken Baowich. It's a baowich that you will bow down to as its a big and I mean big smoked double fried chicken thigh with coleslaw and white pepper!!! The skin is extra crispy so you get that asmr crunch in each bite. While the meat is still juicy and tender on the inside!! You have never had a baowich like this!! The staff here is super friendly and is willing to provide suggestions if you are unsure on what to order. The interior is set up or social distancing with a limited amount of indoor seating. So, I went over in the middle of the work day to order takeaway in person. The owner was friendly and very helpful in offering suggestions on what to try based on our questions/taste. We ordered the fried chicken bun, which in my opinion is one of the best items on there. I think they should even offer it without the bun because the fried chicken is so good and is the star. I also ordered the mushroom bun (mmm highly recommended this one, too. Up there with the chicken!), pork belly (more soft than crispy) and Laotian sausage bun. There was a lot of bun to all of these...I know, I know - it is a bun place after all. But some of these dishes can sing without hiding behind the bread! The bread was a little more dense than I thought it would be. Expected more fluffiness. Also, like many "Asian fusion" spots, it catered to a more American palate and was doused in too much sauce. Again, I think the flavor of the meats and veggie could sing without hiding behind the sauce. And could use a gentler dousing of sauce to give the spotlight back to the mains. Very tasty, though. We got 3 make-your-own bun kits (which are only $10 each!) and 2 kimbaps. Pick up was very easy, I just waited outside until my name was called. I tipped on their venmo @bundup which was also very convenient. The food was packaged very nicely and as always, the food was DELICIOUS! The buns were so fluffy and soft, the eggplant was flavorful and the beef and pork belly were amazing. I liked the pork belly the most--the meat was juicy and had a good balance of meat and fat, and the mayo and vegetable topping complemented the meat well. YAY FOR BUN'D UP! This eatery is owned by Scott, and they started off as a food stall at local farmers markets. I'm so glad that they finally have a brick-and-mortar in the Pentagon Row area, as their items are delicious! The menu offers bao buns (putting a 'modern, Korean twist' on Taiwanese baos), rice bowls, fried rice, and other house specials (such as Sushi Rice Tots and Chicken or Pork Dumplings). They locally source from Springfield Farm in MD - applause! The hubs and I came here for a later dinner, and we were greeted warmly by the owner himself, Mr. Scott! We ordered 3 of the bao buns: the Korean BBQ Beef (with cucumber kimchi, chili sauce, and scallions), the Pork Belly (with pineapple kimchi, cilantro lime aioli (we had this one the side due to my huge cilantro aversion), and scallions), and Korean Fried Chicken (we opted for the sweet soy (instead of the spicy), topped with slaw and scallions); the House Kimchi Fried Rice, topped with fried shrimp (but you can choose other proteins, such as Korean BBQ Beef, Pork Belly, or Miso Chicken); and, the Bulgogi Cheese Steak with Tots. The food was so tasty! The buns, that are handmade, were the perfect fluffy- and softness; no dry or stale parts here! They were probably one of the best bao buns I've had! The Korean BBQ Beef (aka bulgogi) had the perfect marinade, hitting both the sweet and the savory. The KFC was fried well, and the soy glaze was very subtle. I was a huge fan of the Bulgogi Cheese Steak, as the bread was lightly toasted, and the sub was filled generously with the bulgogi, cheese, and this nice spicy mayo-like sauce. The tots were nice and crispy and a great complement to the sub. I really appreciate the fact that they actually take the time to really prep the food with love and care! I'd love to come back and try out their dumplings, their Sushi Rice Tots, and the Bao Bread Pudding. There's also a mini 'bodega' off to the side, with cool Asian beverages/refreshments, snacks, and cute colored hats. I hope this place sticks around for the long run!
