I am writing this review as the son of the owner and course instructor, Chris Ewens so I know that some bias is present and I will acknowledge that. That being said, I can offer good perspective on what to expect from the courses, having sat through them countless times myself. The facility: it is a great facility offering a 50 yard range with various props (doorways, walls, windows and etc.) with benches adjustable for any range of shooting. For more advanced courses there is a 360 degree shoot house with variable layouts and a drive by/drive up shooting range with moving target ability. I would compare the ability of the facility to be similar to what you would get for other West Coast training schools as well. The expertise: I know how well my father can shoot and it is pretty amazing. Even after learning under his wing for years and with my perfect eye sight, I know competition with him is a hard bet. His materials align closely with similar tactical teachings from various other training facilities across the country. His class materials align with the course titles as well. Sometimes people complain about the stresses of simpler practices in the beginning of courses such as tactical reloads, malfunction drills, and proper trigger pull but any expert will tell you that these skills are essential building blocks for the more demanding training later on in his courses. The course sizes: he only ever allows a maximum of 5 students per course for a range designed for five shooters at once. He does so to allow for the maximum personal training per class participant so that each individual can get the training they need. This is much different from most other training facilities where I have never seen the instructor to student ratio to ever be even close to this level. There is never any sitting out because of this philosophy. All shooters shooting every drill. The cost: you absolutely cannot beat the cost of these courses for what you get in training. Most training companies with similar content in these courses charge easily 2-4 times this amount and even more. Chris went into this business with a passion to teach firearms handling and training rather than to make money. He is retired and has a stable income so you know this to be true. My wife and I have received firearms training from Chris Ewens at BullsEye Tactical Firearms Training for over five years. The training facility is in a very scenic and safe location. Unlike crowded, noisy indoor ranges, you have a very scenic, relaxing outdoor range to learn or improve your ability to accomplish greater skill in marksmanship. Mr. Ewens has years of experience with firearms training. He is a very dedicated, patient, fair, and kind instructor. If you are a novice or already have experience with firearms you can relax with Chris as a teacher. "There won't be any snickering, eyebrow raising, eyeball rolling or snide comments to worry about at BullsEye tactical." Chris will not rush you or make you feel uncomfortable. He treats everyone with dignity and respect. If he has a serious tone, it is only because he wants you to realize the firearm is not a toy and your safety is paramount. He will teach you how to not only be safe in the proper handling a firearm, but also, achieve proficiency in target shooting. He watches his students very carefully and helps you see, as well as correct, the mistakes you are making that cause your accuracy to be poor. I have had the privilege of taking my initial CCW and renewal CCW classes with Chris at his Castella facility. Chris does a great job of inspiring his students to do their very best. I know that after each of my classes I drove home knowing he helped me to shoot well and handle safely, but that I still have so much more to master. There is simply nothing better than a really small class with Chris to help a person gain appropriate skills and the confidence to practice what you've learned. His quiet, careful, and deliberate demeanor is impressive. He was so kind and patient with my wife at our first class. The location and facility is great, too. I've had my CCW for over 40 years and have taken renewal classes every two years as required until I've lost count how many, but had never been to Chris' class. When I was up for renewal, Chris was very accommodating - fitting me into a time slot that was convenient and also working around questionable weather conditions. After all those previous renewal classes - I learned things from Chris that were never covered before. Chris was professional, thorough and an excellent instructor. His facility is enviable (wish I could have something like that in my back yard!). Back in 2018 I attended a NRA Range Safety Officer (RSO) class taught by Chris at the Dunsmuir Rod & Gun Club (DRGC). The class was a friendly, comfortable and helpful environment.
