Shepherd Naeme is a big brewery in the small, sort of run down town of Faversham. Just looking at…read moreit from the outside, it reminds me of the corporate breweries in the US. Very much just a factory like any other and lacking any of the charisma or style of many of the craft breweries I've visited. The visitor center is not located at the brewery. It's in the town center and is basically just a pub and a gift shop. The bad thing is, even though it's the official visitor center, unless you take the tour (which are very few and booked out well in advance we discovered), you can't even have a beer there. I was told I could go to any of their "licensed pubs" to have a beer. That kind of defeats the purpose of coming to the brewery doesn't it? I've visited a ton of breweries and they all have public tasting rooms at the brewery so you can drink the freshest beer and the newest recipes. I was amazed. So I didn't get a tour. And I didn't even get a beer. So Shepherd Neame was a complete waste of time.

We were pleasantly greeted and served from a wide selection of ales (Harveys, Timothy Taylor, Adnams, Badger, Whitstable, Wells, Fullers, Sharps, Gadds and more!). The fire gently glowed in the fireplace and everyone exuded a sense of wellbeing, especially the various dogs which were (gently) gamboling about. Lunch had clearly satisfied many of the punters present. We weren't in the market for food but perused the menu - impressive without being too fussy, hit the right note. Loos were clean and functional. Overall ambience was good. The Phoenix Tavern was well lit, without being brassy. Decoration was unfussy yet smart. I'll be back!

Unusually for Faversham not a Shepherd Neame pub. But this is no bad thing with a strong selection…read moreof beers and lagers on tap. This is a good drinking pub and a great pub lunch with an inventive menu that includes Pasta, Seafood, traditional pub lunch dishes and a very good tapas menu. There is a separate restaurant area for the evening meals. Tend to be more expensive but not over priced. Food is very good also but I have only had the evening meal there once. A good sized garden as well. One of my favourite pubs in Faversham to drink and lunch! Rare in that it combines a good drinking pub with decent food.
