Why was the pickup so terrible? Well, firstly, the kiosk at 231-235 North Second Street Philadelphia, PA 1910, is broken and cannot read credit cards. This meant that I had to hold up my credit card close to the camera for the Hertz representative as she slowly and laboriously tried to read my name and my details. This wasn't a lot of fun for either of us as you can imagine, especially given that my full name is Ramakrishna Padmanabhan (I'm getting it changed as soon as I can! :P). Second, I was billed at a different rate than I was promised. What made it worse though was that I noticed my bill was different and I told the representative (and I hadn't clicked on 'Agree'), but she had already made the transaction. So when we repeated the painful process of holding up my credit card all over again for her to get the details, the second payment did not go through. My credit card still hasn't made the funds from the incorrect payment available to me: it's still on hold 5 days after I rented the car. So I then had to use a different card, and I had fun holding up my credit card for a third time and waiting an eternity. In the meantime, another Hertz customer who was waiting in the queue began to get extremely impatient and started yelling at me. The kiosk can hold only one person at a time and it's broken, so I don't entirely blame her for getting impatient, and I guess I was partially the reason for her delay (although I noticed that she was having just as bad a time later). I ended up waiting more than an hour in the kiosk for the simple process of confirming my reservation and making my payment. On the plus side, the Hertz representative was courteous and she suggested that I may receive compensation (which I didn't), but it wasn't her fault that the kiosk was so broken. Also, the car itself ran very smoothly and I had no trouble with it. Returning the car, thankfully, was easy too (took me only 10 minutes). However, my experience with picking the car up was terrible enough that I'm seriously reconsidering using Hertz, in spite of being a gold member. At the very least, I'll never use this pick-up location again.

This place gives me a god damn jet ski! I'm not riding against the current of the mighty Delaware river hundreds of miles and especially not in this weather. WHERES THE ACCOUNTABILITY PEOPLE? I had to mail myself there instead (thanks UPS!) No thanks Hertz!

Both times landed me with a Budget rental car from the office at the Sheraton on 16th and Race. I made my reservations late the night before, and was able to pick the vehicle up at 8 a.m. the next morning, without any issues. The staff is friendly (enough) and quick to process the reservation. In and out in five minutes. The number of available cars may not be high, but there was one immediately available both times I needed one. So why only three stars out of five? One simple matter of (in)convenience that may not affect anyone else, but is worth a comment for anyone in my situation. There is no late-night key drop. If the office is closed and you wish to return your car, you must wait until the next morning and make your way back and deliver your keys in person. While this may not be a common situation for people, I have more often needed to rent a car just for a day, intending to return it at night after my travels. To have to delay this return until the next day is a minor inconvenience that could easily be fixed if the office were to install a simple key-drop system as so many other rental businesses do. Besides that, they're great, and I'll continue to call upon them anytime I'm in the need.

While visiting Philadelphia, my husband and I decided that we wanted to rent a car for a road trip out to New Jersey to visit some of my relatives. My husband picked Budget since they seemed to have the cheapest prices on line a month before renting. Also to help save money on a car rental, we opted of renting from the airport. When we came in, we spoke with an employee behind the counter. He gave us the keys after taking car of paper work. He told us that we have to take the elevator in the parking structure to the 6th floor and walk to the back and find our car rental, based on the parking spot number. This is rather an odd set up since the car is not next to the office, list most other car rental locations. Anyways, we were off to find our car and to our surprise, there were numerous of large scratches on the white car rental that we were given. My husband called the car rental and told the employee that there were several large scratches on this car and we want to have record that it is noted on the car so that we do not get charged for these damages that we did not do. At first the employee (same one who checked us in earlier) said it was fine, but my husband was insistent and wanted something in writing. So we waited for the employee to come. Eventually the employee came and he marked on a paper where all of the scratches were on the rental prior to renting. It did surprise me that the employee did seem surprised by the scratches too. While we had our car rental, the service light was on (it was on from the beginning when we turned the car on, before leaving the hotel). The car rental in general just seemed minimally taken care of. After 4 days, we returned the car to the same spot in the parking structure and walked back down to the car rental to return the keys. After we left, I came back here 5 minutes later because I decided I wanted to use the restroom. The restrooms are down the hall not too far from this location, however it was locked. I asked the employee (again, the same employee we had been working with from when we rented the car to returning it) for the code. He told me that I had to go upstairs and ask security for the code. I told him that I just spent a few hundred renting a car from him and asked him why wouldn't he give me the code? He seemed surprised and then gave me the code and then I left and I was able to get in (please note that the code also works for the men's restroom since my husband ended up wanted to use the restroom as well and I had told him when I walked back upstairs in the Bellevue Hotel lobby where he was waiting for me with our dog). I did not like that the employee was hesitant to come to us when we were at the car rental to mark the scratches that were already on the car before driving away. I also thought it was unnecessary for the employee to withhold the bathroom code when I was clearly a customer of his business. If he did not want me to have the code, he should have just gotten up and open the restroom door for me. Overall, this location was just convenient to where we were staying. But the customer service was just average.
