The Buck Jackson Arena is home to the "World's First Rodeo."
The arena is the west area of Pecos, Texas, in Reeves County.
An historical marker (#5389005909) on behalf of the Texas State Historical Survey Committee, an agency of the State of Texas, stands at the arena. Located at the entrance near US 285 and Walthall St, the plaque reads:
"Held a block south of Pecos Courthouse, July 4, 1883. Started with claims of cattle outfits -- Lazy, Na and W Ranch -- that each had fastest steer ropers. Settlers in town for Fourth of July picnic were spectators. The prizes were blue ribbons cut by pocket knife from new dress of a 4-year-old girl in crowd. Best roper was Morg Livingston, of the Na. Trav Windham, Lazy Y was second. Other contestants: Fate Beard, Geo. Brookshire, John Chalk, Jeff Chism, Howard Collier, Jim Livingston, Jim Mannin, Henry Miller, Brawley Oates, Jim and Henry Slack, E. P. Stuckler. (1965)"
My fiance, being the former pro-rodeo ornery cowboy that he is, stated, "Oh, you know how many times I've been to an arena that claimed they held the world's first rodeo?" Lol.
After visiting the West of the Pecos Museum, I learned a few things about Buck Jackson after who this arena was named. His love for the sport was evident through the photos they displayed.
He was the announcer beginning in 1928 and retained that role for over 50 years. After retirement he continued attending the rodeo for several more years.
Nowadays, the arena is home to top 40 prize-money Professional Rodeo Cowboys of America (PRCA) events as part of the Texas circuit. Their next rodeo will be held June 26 - 29, 2024.
That's all fine should they show off their skills at this seemingly nice venue, but I still say "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy." read more
