It's a little spicy with perfectly cooked shrimp. Remember when you order the 'regular' sized portion, you are ordering family style for four (that's right 4!) people. Bring the neighbors or bring 3/4s of it home. Laughing. Be sure to get some photos next to the bust of the pope. His head is in a plexiglass cube and on a lazy Susan, it cracks me up every time. From the moment we walked in we were greeted and then seated in the Wine Room. We love the decor and ambiance. We had a reservation, but I don't think it was needed. We had a late lunch or early dinner on a weekend. Restaurant had other diners but it was slow. We ordered appetizers of cheesy garlic bread & fried calamari. Our mains were the new Pappardelle Bolognese, Eggplant Parmesan, Cheese Manicotti. The winner was still the eggplant Parmesan. (They were sold out of shells so we couldn't order the quarto or stuffed shells.) My husband felt the beef in the pappardelle tasted off, but I said it tasted ok...that dish wasn't what either of us was expecting. Our server was attentive and friendly. Other staff were also polite, etc. Left feeling like the meal was okay. Not what it once was. Would we be back? I don't know. Felt expensive for 3 people vs. other local restaurants near our home. This was our first time visiting Buca di Beppo, and unfortunately, it will likely be our last. The experience got off to an awkward start. When our server greeted us and asked how we were, we asked how he was doing in return, and he responded that he "could be better." While honesty is fine, it wasn't the best way to begin a dining experience. He appeared slow-moving and unwell throughout the meal, which honestly made us uncomfortable and less confident about the food we were eating. We couldn't help but wonder if he was sick--or possibly just recovering from New Year's Eve festivities--but either way, it impacted the experience. We ordered the chicken carbonara and the spicy shrimp penne, and it pains me to say this, but the food was mid at best. I genuinely feel like I would have enjoyed both the food and the service more had we gone to Olive Garden instead, which isn't something I say lightly. Since it was our first visit, I also expected a bit more guidance. The server knew it was our first time dining there, yet didn't explain the layout or how to exit the restaurant. When it came time to leave, I wasn't sure whether we were supposed to exit the same way we entered--through the kitchen--or navigate the maze-like dining room to find another way out. Made a reservation for a birthday online, our table was ready early and they were very gracious when I informed them we'd unfortunately had a few people cancel that morning. Considering that all the other Buca di Beppo locations in the area have closed and this is the only one still open -- about an hour and 15 minutes from our home -- we were happy to see that it still lives up to the original standards. The food was very good, and as always, the portions are huge. You definitely pay for the large portions, but you also leave with wonderful leftovers to enjoy the next day, which makes it worth it. We visited for dinner on New Year's Eve to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday with a party of eight. We were seated quickly and had two servers who were extremely attentive throughout the evening. When we arrived, they took us through the kitchen -- which is always a fun and unique touch -- and seated us near the Pope Room. Our group was comfortably seated at a large round table, which made it easy for everyone to talk and enjoy the celebration. If it weren't so far away, we would absolutely go more often. While it's no longer the most convenient location for us, it was still a wonderful experience and worth the drive for a special occasion. read more

I debated about posting, hoping we'd hear from manager for explanation, but it never came. Very disappointed at our family Christmas dinner. Manager promised us space for our family and then on Christmas when we arrived, we were not seated in agreed-upon space. We've been in Lombard and patrons for over 25 years. Not going back. Manager didn't even have decency to see us and explain. Terrible "taste" of service for all 22 of us. Maybe they should consider not being open for the holiday if cannot provide the service. The ambience is stellar! Very warm and inviting with a red Roman Catholic Italian theme. The shrimp appetizer was very good along with the garlic bread and tomato and mozzarella. The only reason we ate here was to burn through a gift card, and the location much closer to us in Wheeling has been shuttered permanently. Gosh, I wonder why? Maybe they weren't getting customers because of servers like the one we had the other evening? Maybe they weren't getting customers because the quality of the food declined? Our waiter for the evening was surly, unpleasant, and appeared to be wanting to be anywhere else on the planet other than the restaurant. And the food left a lot to be desired. Our Chicken Marsala was drowning in sauce more reminiscent of a sweet and sour sauce at a Chinese restaurant, than the eponymous wine sauce you would find at an Italian establishment. The Caesar salad was the highlight of the evening, along with a very nice parking spot, close to the restaurant entrance. We were here for a Birthday Party. The event was held in one of their private dining rooms. I enjoyed the nostalgic decor as you enter the restaurant. It makes you feel at home. It was spacious and can definitely fit a decent amount of guests. If you're looking for family style dining, this is the place. Portion size was huge and guests are leaving with doggy bags. Staff was wonderful making sure beverage pitchers were always full and ensuring each table had proper utensils and correct dishes for each table. Wow, wow, wow! I was really surprised to see this place only had 3 stars overall, I had a great dinning experience here! Granted this place isn't as fancy as Vai's or Maggiano's but the food is excellent. You get these huge portions for a fairly reasonable price. Tonight I went with a party of three. We ordered a large Chicken Parmigiana, the large came with five pieces. We also ordered a large bowl of Shrimp Fra Diavolo. That pasta is incredible! A lot of flavor and very, very spicy. It was so spicy I started sweating, but it was very tasty. They have a lot of cute cocktails as well. I ordered a sparkling sangria it was massive, but exceptionally good. I also ordered the Roman Tiki, that was good as well but it was extremely sweet. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. She was handling like six tables on her own, which is impressive. Considering her workload the service was pretty fast. The wall art is so cool here, lots of very interesting vintage pictures. It gave the place a lot of character. First off I was able to make a reservation using open table which I think makes all dining better when you don't have to wait for hours for a table. Second when we arrived we were greeting promptly and then taken through the kitchen which was a new experience. It was clean and looked like it was being well run. Next was drinks which there was a pretty extensive list of cocktails and wines to choose from. The Pom Blossom Martini was delicious. On to the food...it is family style service so HUGE (I mean it) HUGE portions. There was two of us and we could have feed 4 or 5 people off of the salad (Apple Gorgonzola), garlic bread and pasta (Chicken Carbonara). Clothes was dirty and her belly kept popping out the shirt. The place needs a total makeover and had a smell unpleasant, it was embarrassing and the food was not worth the price. I typically do not write reviews on anything, but as a former server of eight years I was appalled by the level of service we received tonight. I was in town for my father's 60th birthday and we decided to go to dinner and use his birthday dessert coupon. Our server Susan was incredibly rude throughout the evening. She did not come check up on us and when we did get her attention she seemed bothered we were asking for "to go containers" or ordering dessert. She would storm off without regarding my parents, in the middle of them talking with her and spent the evening at the bar making drinks/ laughing/ throwing glances and whispers our way the whole meal. A few things to note: we were the only customers in the room, we ordered TWO items off the menu (easiest family order). We waited and waited for her to come back with water refills, bread and just to check in- meanwhile we are clearly finished and my mom is walking around with my 1 year old trying to keep him entertained. Ultimately, she treated her only customers as though we were a bother and could not care to give us the time of day. It is extremely disheartening especially considering it was his birthday and we were looking forward to enjoying a nice dinner out. read more

I've been to Buca di Beppo in Lombard twice now and would not recommend this business. Both times I was with a group and someone else had chosen the restaurant. The first time I was there I was surprised to find out that all of their entrees could feed 3-4 people. What is a single person supposed to order? If the food was halfway decent, it might be a good deal to be able to take leftovers home, but the food is mediocre at best. I was there again this past Sunday with my group. Again, I had a problem finding something to order for just me. I ended up ordering the Brussel Sprouts and Prosciutto side. It was not good. I took a couple of bites and couldn't eat any more. I also tried the Chicken Limone that one of my friends had ordered. It was not good either. It had no flavor. The only thing that I liked about the place was the decor. It's decorated to look like an old school Italian restaurant. I will not be returning. read more

The most gigantic portions here and a perfect family style place for work and personal families to enjoy a good time. The small size portion serves 2-3 people so just beware. It's all family style sharing plates so bring a lot of people. The decor is lovely and quaint and characteristic w many pictures and little antique and not so antique items making it like home. Buca's is an interesting restaurant. The atmosphere is very nostalgic and the food was delicious. It's definitely a step-up from the Olive Garden. We had great service while we were there. If I'm correct, I believe our servers name was Jason? (I think lol) I do remember him mentioning through conversation that he's been with the company for 15 yrs. Again, excellent server, he was very attentive and exceptionally friendly. Meal-wise, we had the Chicken Limone and the baked Rigatoni. Both were great but that Chicken Limone is a grand slam out the park!!! The chicken was cooked perfectly, it had a light sear on it, it was seasoned just right and the lemon glaze was on-point! The only things that prevented me from really giving Buca's 5-Stars was the pricing and the menu concept. Since I had never been to Buca's before, I had no idea that their menu concept is to order family sized portions and share them. I wasn't really too fond of that because in our family, we all have different tastes, so we all tend to order differently when we dine out. So to come to a consensus and agree on what entrees we were going to order took quite a bit of deliberation on our end. It would be nice to just have single serving portion sized meals as an option on the menu. With that being said, Buca's is also a bit on the pricey side for what they serve you. Yes, I certainly bragged about the Chicken Limone but for a "large" order of it to be only 5 filets on the plate and be $50 ...that's kind of wild in my opinion, especially considering how inexpensive Chicken is. Overall, I enjoyed the food and the ambiance. I just don't know how often I would realistically dine here mainly because I'm not a fan of the family-portioned serving idea. Celebrated Easter at Boca today as a family which we have done many times. Still just a wonderful place to celebrate any occasion because it is unique in design and decor. Our server was top notch as usual handling food as well as beverage for a large group she did not miss a beat. One really cannot just describe the food and do it justice, it has to be experienced to truly understand. The atmosphere is very retro with lots to look at. The over all vibe is very warm, relaxed, and welcoming. Ultra casual too, though if you do choose to dress up a bit you won't feel out of place either. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I had a Mediterranean Cosmo and found is very tasty and light. They have a large food menu as well, with plenty of options for all tastes. We started with the bruschetta which is Roma tomatoes, mozzarella, red onions, basil infused olive oil and balsamic vinegar served with parmesan crostini. It was delicious. The bread was still soft while having just the right amount of crunch. The toppings were fresh, plentiful in amount and large in size not to mention full of flavor. A great way to start the meal. For my meal I had the penne basilica which is penne pasta served with chicken breast and broccoli in a parmesan and pesto cream sauce. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, the broccoli was perfectly cooked. Warm and soft with just a hint of crispness. The sauce was perfectly executed. As someone who loves to cook I can tell you how hard it is to get a cream sauce right. Often times it can be so thick and over powering that you can't enjoy any of the other parts of the dish. This sauce wasn't like that at all. It was light, flavorful and very enjoyable with out over shadowing the other ingredients. A delicious meal I will absolutely be ordering again. For dessert I had the double dark chocolate cake. Which is dark chocolate cake with layers of chocolate frosting on top of chocolate sauce. What can I say. If you love chocolate you will love this cake. Moist, creamy, decedent, deliciousness. Additionally if you are like me and like icing more than cake you will absolutely love this cake. We were excited to get a $25.00 coupon in our email, and decided to go on Friday. We went early to try and beat the crowds that we encountered in the past. We have enjoyed Buca's in the past, we have gone many times pre covid. When we looked at the menu, we realized it was downsized. We ordered 2 appetizers, and 2 dinners. The mozzarella garlic bread was good, the calamari wasn't so good, it was chewy, and oily. The eggplant Parm, has changed and wasn't as good as we remembered, the shrimp penne was ok. The server was phenomenal, he did a Great job taking care of us, and checking back. That said, overall our experience was disappointing. Buca's was known for excellent flavorful fresh italian. In our opinion this has changed. we are just glad that we experienced Buca's when it was better. We went to the Lombard Illinois location, unfortunately we won't be going back. read more
