It is rare when a market that sells a lot of fish, does not reek of fish from a block away, so it is a very clean market and we saw evidence of constant clean-up. However, there are genuine contenders like Mercat de Sant Antoni housed in a beautiful, mid-19th-century octagon-shaped building (review: https://yelp.to/QfoN2pYfE_) and this one just rebuilt in 2005 with a kaleidoscopic roof designed as a ceramic wave. It's a more modern space inside with fresh seafood and produce stands alternating with spice purveyors and prepared food counters. All of it looked appetizing though there wasn't much seating on the premises. Through its various iterations in the atmospheric La Ribera neighborhood, the market has been here since 1848. This one has the usual suspects-butchers, fish mongers, olives, nuts, fruit, a stand that had only eggs (a few varieties), Jamon/Iberico Ham only stands and of course various restaurants. I had some breakfast and not breakfast food at Pinotxo Bar (Xuxos, Cafe con Leche, Beef Cheeks and Octopus Galician style. We picked up some croquettes (chorizo) and spinach and chorizo empanadas at another stand-delicious! All your grocery shopping can be done here daily, (bakery, fruit, veggies, meat, fish, charcuterie etc) although not all the stalls are always open except for the main shopping days, usually Saturday and Monday.
