BSMT254 is a tiny little nightclub near the corner of College and Lansdowne in the west end.
I've been following and seeing it pop up associated with various music festivals in the city, and along with that a decisively positive west end latin and reggae cultural vibe.
If you look at their page, it was started only recently in 2019 but since then there is a richness and vitality that pervades their stream in spite of the pandemic and various lockdowns. Whatever happened to the zoom dance parties of 2020 anyhow?
There isn't a lot going on around the area, but don't let that dissuade you from heading downstairs into the Basement of 254 Lansdowne.
There's a small bar facing you as you enter, that looks like it could be something you'd find in your cool uncle's rec room from the 70s.
When I went it was the first post-pandemic publicly accessible show with limited tickets for in-person attendance. So the bar had few drink choices with only canned beers and rail drinks. Speaking of which, I ordered a rum and coke and as I grabbed the glass and brought it toward me, a strong scent of dark rum went straight to me, and I thought, how nice!! ($7.50)
Great bartender, friendly and liked to pour great drinks.
The stage is small and just big enough for the performance, along with the bass bins and other gear. It seems the audio setup is geared to the music there and definitely sounds awesome! Clear and solid bass absolutely. There is a vending machine with earplugs at the door for $2 which I have not noticed at any other bars and should be a publicly mandated health requirement.
The dance floor is not very large and I'm sure gets sweaty and intimate with any decent entertainment here and there are no booths or anywhere to escape the crush of humanity other than the adjoining room with the bar.
The bathrooms are at the back of the dance floor and were surprisingly clean and smelled nice, although kinda cramped.
I enjoyed seeing the live reggae and dancehall sessions there that happen monthly apparently, something I had not ever seen before and was quite the enjoyable experience!
Highly recommended!! read more
