We were treated like royalty, reception booked us in for our evening meal at Castell Deudreath (the more modern hotel and restaurant in Portmeirion Village) and even booked the complimentary taxi service for us so we didn't have to walk up the hill. The meal was superb and the taxi brought us back to our hotel when we were finished. Our room was perhaps a little dated but charming all the same and very pretty and this was all forgotten the folowing morning when we woke up to breakfast in bed and the gorgeous view of the estuary as the sun slowly rose in the sky. I long to return to The Hotel Portmeirion again to fully explore the village and enjoy the tranquility and service we experienced there.

Unfortunately, as soon as we walked into the premises, we were swiftly followed into the bar by the manager and told that he would only serve us one drink. Despite the bar being open for another three hours, he told us that we were only entitled to one serving. His explanation was that we had not been in all night and were therefore only allowed drinks on his terms. The local drinkers also expressed their concerns at his strange decision but he talked over them and allowed us to leave. I wouldn't bother spending your money in this bar. There's a much cheaper pub with a better atmosphere just down the road without an unwelcome manager.

The staff was very pleasant, and served us promptly even though there was a huge table full of old people (probably a tour.). Haha, they were about our age. I ordered the smoked hake and chorizo risotto, because I usually love chorizo. But I ended up fishing it out and stacking it on the side, as it was so spicy AND gristly that it overpowered the dish. With it out of the way, the rest of the dish was quite good. My husband had the cow au vin, which was outstanding. I'd return just for that. I was jealous.

We ate here twice, easily the best food in the local vicinity and the atmosphere is especially suited to cold wintry nights. We had the homemade Steak & Ale pie and Slow braised Lamb Hock, both were divine. This is not fine dining but British classics using excellent local ingredients and executed wonderfully. I imagine this is the kind of fare that the local folk and the farming community have been getting for centuries but virtually impossible to find for us city slickers The perfect reward after conquering Snowdon!

We stayed at the Ty Gwyn hotel in Betws-y-coed, Cymru (Wales) in the early part of October, 2012…read more My sister found it and booked us a couple of rooms for two nights. The hotel is a B&B as well as a very popular restaurant. Betws-y-coed is a gateway to Snowdonia, the national park which is a must visit if you're in the area. If you stay some place else, you must try to get a reservation to the restaurant. And getting a reservation on a Friday and a Saturday looked like a hard thing to do. The food is excellent, well served. The breakfasts are amazing. The ambience in the somewhat cramped environment is charming. The hotel itself is very well run. The staff, and in particular Rob (?) and the owners son whose name we forgot to get, were all very professional and friendly. They do have wifi but it does not extend into the rooms unfortunately. Which means we had to go and sit in the tiny lobby to get a good signal. But it is there and it is free. The rooms are small and most come with en suite bathrooms. Some rooms look like they have the bathroom across the hall but are dedicated to a single room. Everything was clean and well taken care off though not new. The lamps are low. I'm not tall and it was easy to brush my head against the chandelier. Mattress was comfortable, room was warm, the shower had good pressure, tea and coffee provided. The outer walls to this hotel are thick. The walls between rooms are thin so noise travels easily. My wife could hear the guy next door snoring. I easily rose to the challenge and out-snored him according to her. One of the main drawbacks to the hotel is that it is right on the street. And a busy one at that during the day. And by right on the street I mean you have to watch traffic carefully as you walk next to the hotel. Traffic noise does seep in but traffic dies down at night to pick up again in the morning. It wasn't a problem for me. If you're sensitive, then a room on the back of the hotel might be better. I liked my view of the river from our window. It's a little walk across a bridge to get to the town but it's not a big deal. Definitely go to the restaurant for an evening meal. You won't be sorry. I really enjoyed staying here and recommend it to anyone.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly…read more The Good This was a bucket list wish trip. We've been wanting to get to see Portmeirion for 30 years and this was the year!!! We booked a room in the hotel and it included breakfast and we decided against having dinner there because as luck would have it the yearly Christmas craft and food festival was going on at the grounds. We enjoyed the fair and in the evening we sat in front of one of the fires. Husband reading and me knitting. Wonderful relaxing visit. The public rooms were old world gracious and cozy. The bar had a nice selection of drinks to enjoy. Our room was beautiful and we had two windows. One over the river and one up to the village. It was cold and rainy during our visit but believe it or not we came for this weather, being from Florida we kind of miss the cold. The Bad First morning breakfast was a full Welsh breakfast and was good but the second day, the last day and the one we will remember was horrible. I got the salmon eggs Benedict and husband an omelette. His breakfast came out steaming, mine - I almost had to chip off the ice. Okay there wasn't ice on my eggs but there was not a degree of warmth over room temperature and the room was cold. Couldn't catch the eye of a server. They were too busy cleaning up getting the room set for lunch. I had one bite of my eggs and pushed them aside. I went to fix my cup of tea and there was only two sugar cubes in the sugar bowl. What???? Thank goodness the table next to us was empty so we just swapped out. No salt and pepper on the table either. You would think the servers would notice that the food hasn't been eaten and ask about it. The Ugly Finally got the attention of our server. I told him my eggs were cold and inedible and if he had checked on us it could have been corrected during breakfast hours. (Breakfast was over by the way). He then got snippy and said there is no check because breakfast is included in the room. What the heck??? Just wish our last memory was better. Would i return?. That's a good question. The facility is beautiful, the room was great. Walking around the village was interesting but leaving hungry wasn't how I wanted to end our trip. Honestly if breakfast service is any indication of meals there I'm glad we didn't spring for dinner.

I absolutely loved my stay here and can't wait to return…read more The impetus for our visit was the fact that we are die-hard fans of The Prisoner, but I was pleasantly surprised with how lovely the stay itself was, separate from everything attached to the show! Staying in The Village is already so much fun, and our apartment was clean, nicely furnished, and cosy. The shops and restaurants around are lovely, and I myself love Portmeirion china so I enjoyed shopping there. We also learned a lot about the history of the place and it is rather fascinating and unique. There is a nice art gallery which I went to and was able to talk to the artist, Rob Piercy, who has done a lot of work on Portmeirion over the decades. I bought his lovely coffee table book and thoroughly enjoy it. The gift shop in No. 6's is fantastic. The only thing I wish they had were shot glasses, but we bought lots of other fun things. Unfortunately as we visited during winter, the pool area was not available but it looked very inviting. Exploring the whole village was a real treat, as there are so many little hidden walkways, stairwells, and more which one continues to stumble across! Amazing views of the sea, and a nice walk along the beach. Even in stormy weather, our hike in the woods was one of my favorite trails I've ever been on. The dog cemetery was particularly spooky. There were so many little hidden areas we kept finding and spent hours walking in the woods. The food at the hotel down by the water is superb, with great service as well. Some of the best afternoon tea I've ever had. This is one of those places you just want to spend ages at. I'd come here for my honeymoon, it's definitely a great getaway for couples.
