Visible from virtually all areas in this part of Como, the top of Brunate offers fantastic views from a top height of about 3,000 feet. On our first night here, we were driving around town, exploring some sights before we settled in our hotel for the night. We saw the lighthouse at the top from the ground, and again on the map, and thought "that would be cool to drive to,"and then before I knew it we were on the road headed up.
This is a difficult drive in the daytime when it's sunny; the road is full of extremely sharp hairpin turns, incredibly narrow areas, and is somehow, hilariously, a two-way street. We, however, decided that it would be much more fun to try it at 11:30pm in the pouring rain in our rental car, a C-Class, a comparatively large car for what we were about to attempt.
Despite the weather, other cars, and fog (oh yeah, I forgot to mention the fog) we made it up. We were the only ones up there at that hour (go figure) and despite the rain and clouds, the views were incredible. The lighthouse itself looks like it's as tall as a thumbtack from below, but once you are there you realize how huge it actually is.
If you don't want to drive, there are other ways to get there, including a bus from the top of the funicular. Regardless of how you end up getting there, it's definitely worth visiting while you're in Como. read more
