The memorial is a great tribute to remember the men and women from the local Danville area who lost their lives in our Nation's wars from the American Revolution to current times. There is a 7ft tall x 158ft long black granite memorial wall with each soldiers name engraved along with the phrase "Freedom Is Not Free". There is also a circular brick Memorial Walkway with the names of Veterans on each brick.

Standing opposite the historic Rockingham County Courthouse, which now serves as the Museum and…read moreArchives of Rockingham County, you'll spot this historical marker in front of a two hundred year old building that has since been restored. The marker reads, "Built in 1816. Rare example of dog-run building. Operated by Wrights and Reids. Birthplace and home of Congressman J. W. Reid." It is marker number J-26 and it was erected in 1973 by the North Carolina Department of Archives and History. Built and first operated by planter William Wright, who expanded his holdings to 1500 acres and nearly twenty enslaved people, the tavern grew under his son James, who added new wings and replaced deteriorated early sections with the two‑story facade seen today. The Wrights ran a busy operation that included lodging, meals, and supplying food to the nearby jail, and by 1860 the family plantation supported a wide range of crops and livestock worked by twenty-four enslaved people. After James Wright's death, his grandson James Wesley Reid (later a US Congressman) modernized and enlarged the building before the property eventually passed out of the family in the 1890s. The Rockingham County Historical Society purchased the tavern in 1967, placed it on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and restored it to its early appearance. Located just south of the downtown center of Chatham, Virginia, this marker stands in front of a…read morebeautiful home that is a bit too far from the road to photograph well with the trees having started to grow. The marker reads, "Rawley White Martin Residence. Here stands Morea, the home of Lt. Col. Rawley W. Martin (1835-1912), a physician who served with Pittsylvania County soldiers during the Civil War in the 53d Virginia Infantry Regiment of Brig. Gen. Lewis A. Armistead's brigade. At Gettysburg, Pa., on 3 July 1863, Martin led the regiment in the Confederate attack known as Pickett's Charge, and was wounded and captured. After the war, Martin resumed his practice here and, in 1873, bought this ca. 1840 house. He later served on the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, and as president of the state Board of Health, the Board of Medical Examiners, and the Medical Society of Virginia." Saturday afternoon in Chatham turned out to be the perfect time to wander the grounds of the…read morePittsylvania County Courthouse. With no court in session and no one rushing in and out, the whole place felt calm enough to really appreciate the architecture. Built in 1853, it was designed by L.M. Shumaker in a blend of Classical Revival and Italianate architecture, complete with a Greek Revival portico and a tall cupola. The courthouse is still active today, serving as the County Circuit Court of the 22nd Judicial Circuit, and its role in the Ex Parte Virginia case gives the site real national significance. The historical markers around the property add even more context, and the quiet weekend setting makes it easy to photograph everything, including the Confederate marker. Best to do that from across the street. Pittsylvania County was formed in 1767 and named for William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, and the town of Chatham shares the same namesake. Chatham has been the county seat since 1777, after the court moved from Callands, and the present courthouse replaced an earlier 1783 structure one block away. That construction date is interesting because it predates the Civil War and that survived is unusual for a Virginia courthouse. No Union forces ever reached Chatham to threaten it, and the town saw no military action during the conflict. Pittsylvania County sat well south of the main Virginia battle corridors, and Chatham was never a strategic military target. The building's mix of architectural styles, its layered civic history, and the peaceful grounds make it a rewarding stop for anyone who enjoys historic courthouses or small-town Virginia charm. The courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Victorian Courthouse was completed in 1861 and designed by William Percival. The building has very nice architecture with Italian Romanesque features. It is two stories tall with large windows. You can't miss it in the square.

Caswell County was established by the State of North Carolina in 1777. The courthouse was built…read moreshortly before the Civil War in a Victorian design. The present courthouse is the fourth here, built after the third structure was burned down in the 19th century. This was designed by William Percival and includes central arches supporting overhanging domes. The building houses two courtrooms within a combination of Neo-Classical, Victorian, and Renaissance architectural styles. The design is unusual for sure. The old Caswell County jail, built towards the end of the nineteenth century, stands behind the courthouse. The basement is the site of a brutal murder - Senator J.W. Stephens was killed here in 1870, sent to investigate suspected KKK members. The murder, along with that of black town commissioner Wyatt Outlaw in Graham earlier that year, led to the Kirk-Holden War. The Governor declared martial law and suspended the right of habeas corpus in Caswell County. On a Sunday afternoon, the building was locked and secured. The front door is glass so you can still peek inside at the main hallway. And of course, the grounds are open for walking. Along a quiet stretch of US Highway 158 in front of a regal looking home, this marker points out…read morethe person after whom this city and another county were named. The marker reads, "Congressman. A State legislator and political leader. Died in 1828 at the age of 42. His home and grave are here." Online, there is more information. "Bartlett Yancey of Caswell County served as a Congressman and legislator before dying at the early age of forty-two. Yancey's goal was to be a United States Senator but was never realized. However, his skill as a lawyer and as a Congressman ensured his position in both the state and national political arena. Despite his death at a young age, Yancey contributed significantly to both his own Caswell County and to other parts of North Carolina, leading to the renaming of Yanceyville and the naming of Yancey County, both in 1833."
