Out of thousands of students of my school, I was fortunate to go on a trip with 20 others for Brookdale Community College's Male Minority Conference / Initiative. We were served two meals, breakfast and lunch, along with a motivational speech to start us off and the communcations / media breakout room I went to afterward that just gave helpful life times, pretty general for any medium you want to be a part of. Starting off with the breakfast I enjoyed my everything bagel, chocolate donut, and orange juice. Let me just not go with that combo of the last two again. Next, for brunch I had sausage, eggs, a muffin, bacon, and potatoes. A lot of the food itself doesn't really look appetizing, but then again, it still did taste pretty good (maybe I was just really hungry) and it was all free! And so was everything included that day. Hope to be back in the room where it happens next year. As this is a review of the college, the campus is certainly pretty nice for a community college. It definitely earns its title for best in the state. And staff hold lots of wisdom and are certainly qualified for their roles. The IT department (Help Desk) has peculiarly infrequent hours which means it is easy to get STUCK. And that can happen through no fault of one's own! The classes are all "B" able with minimal effort [some very specific program courses like very specific nursing classes etc. aside] and B+/A- able and A able with a bit of effort. You don't have to be a genius to get a 4.0 at Brookdale Community College - you just have to put in a bit of time to do the reading and memorize the stuff the professors told you to memorize. It's pretty basic. But the offerings are very limited. Some sections fill up fast and have wait lists, while the sister face to face classes stack up unfilled. The classes felt like a whole lot of busy work - not a whole lot of learning work - just busy work. The teachers basically want to see that you tried and didn't plagiarize! Brookdale is a great institution, but like many large institutions, it employs a lot of people who don't believe in its mission, and aren't very good. To get good results out of Brookdale, you need to find the good people and avoid the bad ones like the plague, because the bad ones are bitter, nasty, and dishonest. Using word of mouth, RateMyProfessors, and the candid opinions of professors you trust, you'll be able to find fantastic instructors here. Avoid the Student Life Office, which is staffed by the worst people who are employed by Brookdale. Brookdale is a good lesson in how to navigate life: don't let the toxic people trick you into thinking they're indicative of all of humanity. Really, I'm the first one to review Brookdale CC? Well, as a person riddled with internal conflicts it is not surprising that choosing a college was not an easy for me. As you may have guessed, I still have not chosen the four year institution which I will graduate from but I have been enjoying my time here, at Brookdale. The campus is actually quite beautiful and well maintained and most of the classrooms are relatively new. As a graphic design major, most of my classes are in the CVA building (Center for Visual Arts). The teachers are really hit & miss. I've had some absolutely wonderful teachers and some absolutely dreadful ones. Wes Sherman is a terrific professor. I had him for Color Theory, Figure Drawing, and Art Appreciation. Dan Schroll (Typography, Illustration) is also a great guy and dedicated professor. I can honestly say that I am getting a high quality education at Brookdale Community College for about $1,600 a (full time) semester. Friends of mine who attend Rutgers and Monmouth University have the same curriculum as I do and I learn just as much (if not more). Even if you are just looking to take some classes on the side, their art program is fabulous and most of the art professors are passionate about what they teach. The only qualms I have about BCC are regarding the guidance and registration departments. They always seem to be making mistakes and mixing up appointments. It's complete chaos. I've figured out how to register online to avoid dealing with these incompetent people. Overall, for a community college, Brookdale is a great school. The campus is beautiful, the classrooms are nice, and most of the teachers are actually very good. Just a Note: Brookdale Community College now offers bachelor's degree programs at their Wall campus. It's called Communiversity. I believe they are in conjunction with Rutgers University. read more

I have been nothing but impressed with the staff at this college. They truly want to help everyone succeed. From the undergrad program to the continuing education department. This place is a treasure. Great programs to take advantage of especially if you don't know what you want to do after high school, changing careers or want to get certified in a specific trade. read more

Coming from middlesex this place is like a breath of fresh air! Everyone is super helpful. Everything gets done very quickly and you can easily check on how your financial aid is going. If you forgot to send something in, they will make sure you know by sending letters and emails. Really great! The teacher are also really great and helpful. I attended this school until I got my associates degree and transferred to a 4 year school. Overall this is a very good community college. The teachers are for the most part very good, with a few exceptions. The buildings are all very nice and neat and the campus grounds are well maintained. My only issue is the guidance department. I would never have the same guidance counselor twice and each person told me something completely different from the last. Sometimes they tell you to take classes you don't need or stead you in the wrong direction, which ultimately makes your time their longer and just adds frustration. With that exception the school Is very good. I recommend this school over Ocean County College or Mercer County College. read more

Applying for classes is extremely tedious. For example, my requirement was 60 credits, no matter what different combination of classes I planned to reach my goal, I was always one credit short. Which forces me to take an additional unnecessary class to waste my time and money on. Similarly, with the MSCIT Competency 12 credit requirement, students must take 12 credits in math, science, and technology classes, science and math are worth 4 credits, but all tech classes are 3 or less. This forces the student to take an additional class just to fulfilled the numbered credit requirement, even if you have taken one of each. In addition, some classes are overpriced for certain circumstances, in my opinion. I am taking a summer class that is Fully Online (Distance Education), meaning there is no professor teaching the class. However it was overpriced, even compared to other classes that had a live professor teaching. Definitely do not recommend this school, take your business elsewhere. read more

What a great community college. I spent two semesters (and a Winterim) here before transferring to Fordham University in New York. Brookdale was remarkable for a few reasons: First, the cost. You can easily cover all tution costs with a basic financial aid package (to give you an idea). Second, the various locations you can take classes at--Hazlet, Lincroft, Freehold etc. Thirdly, the easy application and registration process. The staff does not leave you on your own, instead they walk you through the entire process and ensure you get where you need to be. And finally, the greatest thing about Brookdale, is their transfer policies with the major 4 yr universities in NJ. If you do 2 yrs at Brookdale (at a super cheap rate) and decide to transfer to Rutgers or NJIT or Georgian Court, all of your credits will transfer! No hassle...Check out Brookdale! read more

This college will mislead you on the requirements to graduate causing you to extend your time to graduate and to incur thousands more in debt. Granted they have a nice lab for Anatomy classes but they will mislead you so be very careful. They like to split courses and not label them as only half of a class so make sure you're taking the full course and check the requirements for yourself, don't take their word because most of the advisors are inexperienced. read more

I have one bachelors degeee already in communications that wasn't worth the paper it's printed on. I went back to Brookdale to earn an associate's in graphic design. The instructors are great, but the program is a complete money making scam. They seem to want you to take classez on everything except they have no classes in the entire curriculum that teach how to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop from a beginners perspective. You are given assignments in typography where you are just expected to k know how to use the programs. I told my instructors I had no previous knoeledge on how to use the programs and even wrote the dept head. Both answers were that I should look into local classes elsewhere to learn how to use them. Well then what the hell is the point of a Graphic Design program of I'm not learning the two cornerstone programs? Complete scam. I dropped out of the program. You can learn way more for under $100 on Udemy or Treehouse or even by watching YouTube. If you learn from these sites and put together your own good portfolio you will not need any degree. IDK how it's even legal for BCC to get away witb this. This college is corrupt in so many ways. You know this from simply reading the newspaper. They should be ashamed. read more

There's plenty of good to be said at Brookdale. As a student for four years (during which time I've earned three degrees) whose father has worked here for over twenty years (free tuition for me is a plus and a bias) I personally believe there is no better education in community college. Class is taken very seriously and the people who claim "Brookdale is a joke" are the near-dropouts from local high schools who never finish up college to begin with. I was accepted into HOPKINS and (in no small part due to aforementioned cost) chose Brookdale instead. I hear from so many classmates from other schools over the summer that Brookdale is actually more challenging and fulfilling in class than NJIT, Rutgers and especially Monmouth. A lot of the dedicated teachers such as Art Marshall or Nancy Liu have been here for decades. Clean, large campus in Lincroft and multiple convenient locations across the county for easier courses. Add this in to the fact that for some majors you can actually earn a degree from Rutgers - called the Communiversity program - all from the classrooms of Brookdale's Freehold campus. Tuition is incredibly modest compared to four year schools (meaning less than $2k/semester at Brookdale versus $15k/semester at Monmouth) and with what I believe to be a better quality of education. Sports teams are top-notch and the staff all throughout campus are professional and friendly. I worked several part time and seasonal jobs and have always enjoyed doing so. I can't forget the exact titles, however Brookdale has been lauded at one of the top(or largest?) ten community colleges in the country, which is no small feat. Long story short, if you're planning on going to school, live in Monmouth County and don't have rich parents or grants, go to Brookdale. Rising tuition costs around the country make community more necessary every day, so be grateful if you have a good school like Brookdale right on your doorstep. read more

Some of the Financial Aid secretaries are really nasty. They really don't try to help you and they answer you like they're mad. Over all the campus is great. They need more useful people! read more

Every single time I go to the campus there's a problem. The counselors are always confused and if you have questions they transfer you to someone else who also knows nothing. None of the administrators take responsibility for their mistakes. It is always someone's fault in "another department". They will tell you, you need to take classes X,Y, and Z. Then, if you're lucky, you will receive a phone call or letter to your house saying you no longer need these classes. The catch is, you won't receive this information until Brookdale already has their hands wrist deep in your pockets. They will tell you that you need to write an appeal letter as to why you are dropping the classes that you're being told you no longer need. Chances are, the appeal letter will be denied, especially if you have financial aid, because they want you to have to pay more out of pocket. Then, they will say the next step is to make another appointment with a counselor, who will most likely play dumb, and tell you there is nothing they can do to help you. Before you know it, you will be out 2 grand and still haven't taken any classes. Brookdale Community College is full of people who "Got their start at Brookdale", incompetent fools if you ask me. read more
