BEWARE! TLDR: This place has bad food and bad service. We went for brunch on Friday morning and while we have previously enjoyed the food here, each time we've come it gets worse, and this time will be our last time giving them our money. Our waitress was horrible - she didn't greet us for about 10 minutes. I would mention her name, but she never introduced herself or wore a name tag. Then when she took our order, she acting very distracted and it wasn't a huge shock that our food came out poorly. My bacon and sausage (that I requested be cooked well done) was raw, the bread for my French toast tasted old, my dining partner's steak (ordered medium well) came out overcooked and shriveled into a tiny piece of unappetizing meat. We would have loved to give them a chance to correct it, but our waitress never came to ask how our food was or even looked at us again until she dropped the check. Zero eye contact, made to feel like an afterthought, AND the food was both wrong and cooked poorly = we won't be coming back. If we're spending $60 on brunch, it's not beyond reasonable expectations to have the food come out the way we ordered it and to be treated like valued customers. This place has jumped the shark - overhyped, overpriced, and awful service. We'll spend our money elsewhere. read more

Definitely one of the better American diners out there! I was with a party of 6 and it was a Monday morning at 10AM. My party was greeted right at the door and escorted to a table immediately. We were served by Brittany. She is amazing at her job! Some of my party has not been to a Broken Yolk before and she eagerly helped us navigate the menu, even giving us recommendations, and generously giving tips to substitute ingredients for my friend with dietary restrictions. She was super detailed oriented and thorough when taking our orders. All the food came out warm, yummy, and in a timely manner. Brittany regularly checked up on us before and after the food had come out, making sure to refill our waters and clean up any plates that were finished. The Broken Yolk is a great cafe with some trendy food. I saw the chef come around making sure everyone enjoyed their meal which I thought was a great personal touch. Personally, I think you have to order their more special entrees or bigger entres to really get your money's worth and the experience. I wasn't feeling that hungry when I went with my group and just opted for the eggs and toast for $12. It was not worth it and I could have made it at home. If you're not going to eat that much, just order two sides (eggs and toast for $7) instead which is what my friend did. I rate it 4 stars because everyone else's food looked really good and they really did try to provide a good service for us. They're also open really early in the morning! Sitting in an unassuming building, and no pretension to be found. This place emphasizes what's on the plate, and it shows. We have never found this place to be without clientele but have never once had to wait for a table. This place runs like a Swiss watch. The dining room is large and open, but the noise level never seemed to high. The place has people from all walks of life. New families, babies, toddlers, kids, old families, grandparents. Everything. It would also be good for a ladies brunch given the portions and the mimosas. Also present was 20-30 something men clearly eating during their lunch break. They know where the good eats are. Nick was great. Attentive, quick with a smile, knowledgeable. Never did our water get empty and the coffee just kept arriving without us asking. He clearly loves his job, and we love how he does it. The food is, of course, top notch. The restaurant may not look like a place that would nail French crepes and fancy omelets, as well as it does churro French toast, but it does. It also nails the coffee. Cold brew with vanilla creamer is my jam. My wife got the no name omelette. This is a greatest hits omelette. Bacon, mushroom, cheese, and tomato in abundance are stuffed into a soft pillowy egg blanket. Avocado and a sauce on top elevate it to the extreme. The sweet trio.... Well, I'd come back just for this. Churro French toast and the cinnamon cake might seem like they'd be pretty similar, but we're both quite distinct. Both delicious. The tiki French toast is like taking a bite of our most recent Hawaiian vacation. The pineapple and coconut come through clean without being overpowering. I ordered the very berry salad with large serving of chicken, strawberries, blueberries, sliced almonds, and goat cheese with raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Sounds delicious, doesn't it?? Much of the chicken was burned and black. It tasted awful. The fruits, cheese, and dressing was very good. The lettuce was weird and every bite was bitter. I left all of the lettuce over. Decided we wanted to try another breakfast/brunch spot than the one we always go to in the OC and happened to stumble upon Broken Yolk Cafe. So glad that we did because we enjoyed our meal and will definitely be coming back. The wait wasn't too long thankfully. Once we were seated our server greeted us almost immediately and got our drink orders in and came back not long after to take our food order in. I ordered a skillet. I can't remember which one, but it was really good. The portion size was perfect for my big appetite. I ordered a coffee as well with my breakfast, and our server or some of the other wait staff would always refill my coffee so I was never low on that. Another thing that I liked was that they had a pretty nice kids menu with lots of options to choose from so even the pickiest eater can be accommodated to. The inside of the restaurant is plenty big with lots of seating. Will definitely be coming back to try their other stuff on the menu. read more

Stopped into The Broken Yolk Café for breakfast today and decided to try the Golden State Eggs Benedict. The place itself has a bright, clean, and welcoming vibe--brick walls, warm wood floors, and pops of teal upholstery give it a modern coffeehouse feel. It's super easy to find, right off the freeway, making it a convenient stop whether you're local or just passing through. The menu is bigger than expected, with plenty of options that lean classic but comforting--everything you'd want in a breakfast or brunch spot. Prices run between $13 and $19, which feels a little high for a coffee shop, but not out of line if the food delivers. And I gotta say... it did. The Golden State Benedict looked fantastic when it arrived. A solid twist on the classic, stacked with creamy avocado, crisp bacon (not too soft, not too crispy--just right), and topped with a rich hollandaise that had a surprising amount of flavor. The drizzle of Sriracha added a spicy little kick that brought it all to life, and the English muffin underneath was perfectly toasted. The side of hash browns was crispy and golden, though they could've used just a little more seasoning. Only real downside? The temperature of the food. It came out somewhere between warm and cool, like it may have sat under the heat lamp just a bit too long before being brought out. Not a dealbreaker, but definitely noticeable. Still, the service was super friendly--everyone there reminded me of my old waiter days at Coco's back in the '80s (don't wanna age myself too much, but it brought back good memories). They were warm, helpful, and really made the place feel like a local favorite. Overall? A really solid breakfast with a few quirks, but I left happy and full. I go to Bikram Yoga next door and always wondered why this place was packed all the time. I finally stopped by after one of my workouts--and now I get it. The environment is amazing. From the host to our extremely friendly server Sam (who kept our coffee topped off the entire time), everyone made us feel taken care of. I stopped in this Saturday morning around 9:50am for a solo breakfast. They were busy, but I was seated within about 10-15 minutes, which I appreciated. The hostess was friendly and my waitress was kind as well. I ordered the 2 Eggs Plus (over medium, hashbrowns, sourdough) and also placed a Breakfast Croissant with hashbrowns to-go at the same time since I was on a bit of a time crunch and needed to drop food off for my boyfriend. My dine-in meal came out in about 15 minutes, but my eggs were served scrambled instead of over medium. Because I was in a rush, I didn't mention it when my server checked back -- I just ate it as-is. Not sure if that was a kitchen mistake or miscommunication. The bigger issue came when I went to pay. I had to flag down another staff member to close out, and that's when I found out my to-go order hadn't been sent in. My waitress had decided to hold it so it "wouldn't come out too early," and said it would need to be placed on a separate tab. While I understand the intention behind that -- I'm a waitress myself -- I do think that's something that should be communicated first. A quick "Would you like me to put that in now or later so it doesn't sit?" would have solved the issue. Instead, I had to wait an additional 15-20 minutes during peak Saturday rush when I was already short on time. As for the food, it was okay but nothing memorable. The scrambled eggs were slightly dry, the hashbrowns were soft rather than crispy, and the sourdough was standard toast. My boyfriend did enjoy the Breakfast Croissant and liked the chipotle mayo, though he agreed about the hashbrowns. Broken Yolk wasn't too far from our hotel and seemed like it'd be a great experience and it was for the most part. Staff is friendly and very welcoming as is the environment and atmosphere. However, the food wasn't what we expected. The portions are great and they do a Mickey pancake for kids, which is fantastic but the food was missing flavor. We visited the Broken Yolk Cafe for the first time and the food was delicious and the service was great for such a busy place. Thankfully they have a live Yelp wait list as there was a 42 to 57 minute wait when we were looking to go around 11am on a Sunday morning. I joined the wait list as party #34 and when we moved to to #15 we started the 12 minute drive over. Our table was ready two minutes after we arrived, what great timing. We were quickly seated in a booth and our server was quick to take our drink orders and returned shortly for our food order. When I was looking at the menu from home, as soon as I saw the lemon ricotta pancakes there was no reason to look any further. Although while looking at the physical menu in the restaurant, I saw it was only $1.50 more to upsize to the large stack which was a no brainer. The pancakes were light and fluffy and had a nice light lemony flavor and definitely lived up to my expectations. It's always good to have some protein with breakfast so I also ordered a side of bacon crispy. It could have been more crispy but no complaints. My girlfriend had the churro french toast and she mentioned that it was very good and just the right serving size. The Cali breakfast burrito was also enjoyed. It is a little loud inside but that's to be expected as the place was packed and there were still ten or more people waiting outside when we left. Definitely make use of that Yelp wait list! There are several big screen TVs in the back if you want to watch a game. We sat towards the back of the restaurant and I was seated facing the kitchen and it was fun to watch all the good looking dishes and yummy looking drinks coming out non-stop. Two of our favorite servers Edee and Crystal work at that time and their service is excellent. We went there for breakfast today. We ordered the No name omelet and the Sweet trio. The omelet was good but was nothing special. The home fries that it came with were delicious. I really enjoyed the sweet trio which is French toast with fruit. The service was excellent. One thing that was unusual was that at the end of our meal we got a bill for both items. I then gave our waitress our credit card and the credit card bill that was brought to our table to sign was more expensive than the original bill we received. I brought this to our waitress attention and she found out they accidentally charged us for an additional item(acai bowl) that we did not order. If I have not been paying attention I would have paid for an item we did not order. Our waitress brought this to the manager's attention but the manager never said anything to us. They have the option where you chose one different Benedict and you get the other one for half off. So that was nice on the bill. I'm super full and happy. And so was my friend. Good thing I came by 9 o'clock and got on the waitlist because as soon as my name was called that waitlist got 10 times bigger!!! And that was in a span of 15 min.
