Anti-Catholic and Anti-Irish sentiment was present throughout the 1800's in CT. It was illegal for Catholics to own land. In1854, the wooden church was set on fire and the cross on top was torn down by unfriendly citizens. In 1867, St Patrick's Chapel was built on the basement level so the growing Irish community could have Mass while they raised money to build the magnificent church above. It was not until 1870 that the upper church of stone and marble was dedicated. It is still one of the most magnificent churches in Connecticut. My favorite part of this church is the gorgeous blue vaulted ceiling with small gold stars.

I was out for the day doing some exploring and geocaching, and I stopped here to pick up a nearby…read morecache. I noticed that there was a labyrinth on the property, and decided to go walk it. This is an old area, and the church dates back to the 1920s, but there's been a mission here all the way back to the 1730s. The church itself is a Decorated Gothic style, and is very picturesque and beautiful. The graveyard surrounding the church has headstones and monuments that go way back. The labyrinth is in a quiet, peaceful part of the grounds and is a very nice place to go take a meditative break from the world. Overall if you're a fan of history and architecture, this is a good place to stop and look around.

The…read morechurch building through the years has moved, the very first building was on the corner of East Ave and Fort Point St. Sunday services are at 10 am with the children leaving for Sunday School after the Children's message. From July until the end of October the church hosts a Farmers Market in front with a Children's Craft Corner to keep the little ones occupied while mom and dad shop. The church also has a "Little Library" in front, with books which you can take for free, and if you have books to give, you just place them in. There is always a fellowship hour on Sundays with coffee, tea, and snacks. We are an Open and Affirming church, all are welcome. You come as you are, no need to dress up (unless you want to).
