They have sneaky fees that when asked where it is stated on their webpage, they avoid the answer. You also have to send your email multiple times because they typically answer half of the questions. Also they allow the instructors to select the books and the books are terrible. Like if you try to work outside of the class lessons, you are lost. The structure of the class was suuuuper slow. I got to where I brought other work to do at the same time because it was at such a snails pace. I have taken other language courses where there was MUCH more interaction among students, even online. When I asked about a refund, they made it clear that you have to request in the first week of the course. I found that a bit tough because I think most people are hopeful it will get better. Soooo it feels like they tell you it's money back guaranteed but create a system where it's difficult for the consumer to comply. Furthermore, they provide you "options" so that "you are satisfied" but the option to transfer to another course isn't realistic because every instructor uses a different book. Or they offer to let you join a different class in the following month but you have to pay a fee to do that. I didn't want to chance paying more money to have a repeat experience. Furthermore, the month offered isn't compatible with other life stuff, but I was not offered to select a month that is more suitable, hence providing options that aren't doable to say that you provided options of "good will" (they bolded "good will" multiple times in their email). So I guess it depends on what you want, something cheap and you may learn something, or higher quality, probably more expensive but will most likely learn more than a few things.

My personal experience started with a couple of weeks worth of 1:1 German language lessons with one of new tutors, a woman to moved to Berlin to pursue a Master's degree in teaching foreign languages. She was diligent in teaching me some German that I wouldn't necessarily learn in my classes for at least a month or so, but would be useful for getting around. I then took the intensive A1.1 and A1.2 level courses for a couple of months, which were the equivalent of perhaps a year of high school German. The format of the classes includes lecturing, role-playing, practicing verbally with classmates, and the more traditional workbook exercises. German got difficult quickly, so I started taking the A2.1 evening courses as a way to give myself time to really digest the language. Same format as the daytime intensive courses, but it took a few months to get through the same material. PRO-TIPS: + If you're planning on taking intensive courses during the summer, do yourself a favor and register before the 20th. Not only do you get a €5 discount off the course, but you'll actually get the course you want. I made the mistake of not doing this and lost my space in a class with the best instructor I had. + My favorite instructor was Marten (sp?), one of the instructors for the intensive daytime course. While some of the teachers go by the textbooks (boring!), Marten was great about giving short lectures that gave us just enough information to practice whichever concept was the lesson for the hour. I loved how he gave us the "Legos" and encouraged us to build sentences with them. + While the textbook and workbook total to around €20 per course (a reasonable cost), there are some cash-strapped folks that might appreciate that you can actually borrow the books by paying the purchase price and just making sure you erase all your answers before returning the materials at the end of the course. As long as the books don't have any visible marks, you get your money back. There are many language school options in Berlin, but I felt like I really got a decent exposure to German for a reasonable price.

If you're looking for German courses in Berlin, I strongly recommend checking out Transmitter!…read more I've taken several courses with them, from A2 through B2, and have always had a great experience. In the time I've spent at Transmitter, I've worked with four different teachers, and they've all been excellent--very nice, well prepared, helpful--and just all around interesting people as well! It is obvious that the people who work at Transmitter really care about the students and helping them learn. Besides being attentive and welcoming, they also do things like host regular outings in the city (like gallery visits, bar nights, conversation nights, etc.) On top of all this, I've also found that courses here are not as expensive as other places. Who could argue with that?

I was really uncertain if signing up for a language course was going to be the best method of refreshing my knowledge. Turns out, it has been! I'm impressed on a daily basis with how flexible Hanno, and the rest of the Transmitter team, is in dealing with students with a very wide range of German experience. Everyone joining these courses has their own background with German, and yet the classes work and we make progress. It's difficult to learn German in a place like Berlin, since it's so easy to get by without speaking it. The Transmitter team definitely takes that into account, and through the small class sizes, frequent partner and team activities, as well as encouragement to use German outside of classes, everyone has been making a lot of really amazing progress. Glad I'm spending these two months with these folks!!

If you have any problem you can surely find someone at the office to help you. I enjoyed being to that school, I think they put the priority on being here for each of us and to the quality of the services. The bad points would be that it's a little bit expensive and that you cannot find intensive evening courses.

When I first contacted Das Akademie, the support staff responded quickly and were very friendly and supportive in helping me find the best fit for a class. I was only in Berlin for seven weeks and wished to develop more confidence in speaking. I also have mild/moderate hearing loss and felt it might be better to have a one-on-one teacher to work with me. I wear hearing aids and with them most people don't realize I have trouble hearing, but language learning can be more difficult. On my first day, I spent time with the Director at DAS Akademie as he helped to choose a teacher that was a perfect fit. She quickly figured out that although I had learned many individual vocabulary words, I was still having difficulty with pronunciation and sentence structure. Rather than rush through exercises to "cover" material, we spent extra time practicing asking and answering questions so that I felt comfortable actually speaking in public. She was not only very creative in coming up with different ways of helping me practice, she did so in such a positive, energetic and fun way. My seven weeks passed way too fast. Each day that I walked into Das Akademie Berlin I was greeting with big smiles and encouraging words from everyone. Next summer I will likely come back to Berlin and if I do I will definitely be coming back. Everyone from the Director, to the teachers and all of the support staff are wonderful.

They offer intensive german courses 3 hours a day (4 units of instruction of 45 min) from Monday to Thursday, 4 weeks. Total 64 units of instruction for 222€. They have courses from 9-12, 12-3, 3-6 and 6-9. You get an official european level within 2 courses (so 8 weeks). They do an entry level test to place you in the right level. We were 11 students but 2 quit in the middle and most of the days someone was missing son average 7-8 students. That's pretty good for the course. At the beginning of the course I wasn't happy with my course and teacher. The teacher was playing most of the times games, and I think we should have followed the book more. Most of the students were always late (except 3). I tried to change but there were no empty space in other groups so I continued. Actually it got better through the days, so I am glad I stayed. The teacher was teaching more grammar, and we started to read a book. I find the course very well to know german to everyday life and to speak. We did a lot of exercises in groups, to speak, which I consider great, as now I am able to speak (even though I know I make mistakes), and I loose "the fear" talking in german. I did here B1.1 and I signed up for a B1.2 next month. I am not sure if only with the intensive course you will be able to get through the official german exams, as there aren't too many hours, but they have special courses for that too. I will see, as I have to prepare for the B2 certificate. I think they should include Friday as day of class, so in total make a course of 80 units of instructions, which is recommended for each sub-level. And another thing: we made a 15 min pause after 1,5 h, which it is necessary in order not to get crazy, but sometimes this pause was 20-25 min. My teacher was late couple of times, so if you do the total, we didn't do 64 units of instruction. For me it's fine because I work every day at home too. The school is right in Alexanderplatz, which is Berlin city center and a great location. The staff is very friendly. As far as I know they speak English an also Spanish, which I really appreciate it. Anyways, I was happy with the result, and I am going to continue with them. To conclude, I would recommend this intensive course, it's a very good course for the price!

I'll let you know right now this place is pricey, and I wish I had known about other credible language schools before deciding upon Goethe. I learned from several locals, whose first language wasn't German, that there are language institutes in Berlin that are much cheaper and better than GI. Also, if you're going to be taking courses at GI for a month, you might not be assigned a tandem partner (so much for wanting to improve my speaking skills!). We showed up on orientation day where we took placement tests which consisted of multiple choice and essay questions. After, we were interviewed by some of the teachers. My interview went very well, and the woman who interviewed me became my teacher for the B1-Level Intermediate German course. On the other hand, my friend didn't enjoy her interview and thought her interviewer was a jerk in the way he asked questions and made negative remarks on her attempt to speak in German. That's the last thing you want to experience when learning a language! My class had about 20-25 people, all were from different countries. Although my teacher was nice and helpful at times, I didn't enjoy her teaching style. We often worked in groups then presented our answers to exercises to the class. She would correct us or offer suggestions, but I didn't think this helped with my learning. Her explanations didn't meld well with my mind. We also had to do a presentation on any topic we wanted. Some of the students in class were arrogant and made rude remarks about some of the topics presented, and the teacher didn't even bother to correct this problem. GI provides learning materials to students, such as workbooks and worksheets. Maybe I'm used to reading and doing work from a textbook, but I found the workbooks to be useless. There wasn't any valuable information pertaining to grammar, which is a MUST KNOW. Knowing German grammar at an intermediate level will greatly help if you decide to invest in these courses. The workbook only consisted of a bunch of corny stories that failed to illustrate valuable concepts...if any. We only used them in class because many of the exercises required listening to audio recordings. The worksheets were a little more helpful, but there were hardly any instructions. There were a few things that I liked about this class: 1. We played all sorts of learning games to help retain vocabulary and information. 2. We took field trips to historical sites in Berlin. The class was divided into small groups and given worksheets with questions to answer. The following week we'd present our findings. I didn't attend the last two weeks of class because it wasn't beneficial, and I still received a certificate. Overall, I wouldn't suggest taking courses at GI. It's expensive, overrated, and the quality of education is terrible.
