Well this is an odd play of events. Paul the owner of British Auto Repair; has had my Triumph TR6 for 2 years! Basically we decided that we would go get the parts and car; from the current mechanic (not working on my car). I felt quite confident in Paul. He had a shop full of tools. Spare parts bins seemed to be in organized shape. Being mechanically minded myself, I've seen cleaner shops; but hardly! I asked him if he needed a down payment; or any kind of starter money. He said let me just get to work; I'll let you know (payment) as we go! Boy that was a nice feeling! Called once a month for the next 5 or 6 months and at some point, sadly his #1 mechanic had cancer. He was no longer working in the shop. Hoped for the best, and called him a few months later; (all in all this is about 1 year now)and stated that his mechanic was in treatment; and expected him to come back soon. Great news,I said! At that point, I didn't talk to Paul for several more months. On December 12th 2018 I was with a couple of friends and a mechanic that I've known for awhile; that agreed to help me on my TR6; if there was nothing going on with Paul, and his shop. We called Paul on the spot. He seemed a bit nervous, and jerky! LOL He offered that his mechanic had returned to work. Proudly (and nervously) he added,that he had actually hired an additional mechanic. He went on to say, "he would be starting on my car very soon." It takes a lot to get me upset with a lazy person. But this was ridiculous!!! 2 years later.... he's going to start working on the car shortly? LOL!.... I told him I needed to get the car out of there. Could he tow it to a new location where somebody WILL work on it? ( I paid to have it towed to his shop... WASTED TRIP) His response Wellllll... gee....I'll have to check with my tow truck guy? With nothing but pure frustration, and glee! I said that's Ok, I'll send a driver down to pick up the car tomorrow. Now here's the REAL REASON for this review. Paul told one of my friends that came down in the tow truck, that I had not given him ANY MONEY to do the work in the last two years! Basically, making a very awkward scene and trying to "throw me under the bus" with guys that know me very well!!! Oops? Good luck getting them to work on your car. I made several attempts to get Paul, the owner, to work on my MGB but he never came through. He kept asking me to call him back as there were other jobs he was finishing. (made sense at first) Each time I did, I would have to run through my whole story. He said he was going to come to my house to pick up my engine and never showed up. I called him back and two more times he gave me days that he said he would reach out to me and never even bothered to call me and let me know he wouldn't make it. I guess I'm glad I avoided an even longer waiting game with my car stuck there as I've read in other reviews. The reviews are true. Don't bring your car here! At first the owner, Ian, was so nice, friendly and seemly accommodating-- offering to give me ride back to my house while he worked on my car acting like they really go above and beyond here. I was having engine problems and alignment issues. I brought my car here multiple times in an attempt to diagnose and fix the problem to no avail and disastrous problems I had to deal with. The car was shaking when I drove over 50 mph. LRS test drove the car and said it was fine and gave it back to me. I paid for the assessment and they sent me on my way with my wasted time, money and still shaking car. My better judgement told me something was still wrong, so I took my car to Big O' Tires to get the car re-balanced and to try and figure out what the problem was. They discovered that the wheel axel connecting my two front tires was broken. I ordered a new axel and was on my way. After, my car still felt a little off. I knew that LRS don't specialize in tires. I thought I had an engine problem so I let them check the car out again. They were my set car people so that's what I did. I left the car there for two days, bumming rides from my friends and making due. Again, they told me that the car was okay and Ian told me I'd be fine to drive up to LA. I was just paying for his assurance. I made it up to LA and through my day. On my way home, the car was acting funny in stop-and-go traffic. I was doing my best to drive it kindly. On the one-lane on-ramp of the 101-- during rush hour-- my engine started smoking like it was going to implode into flames. I turned the car off and stepped out meanwhile holding up hundreds of people. Crazy, fast-life-fueled, LA people were screaming and honking at me. Some of the people got out of their cars and ran up to see what was wrong. A couple of the helpful people were mechanics. They looked at my engine and told me it was my radiator and advised me to let my car cool for a minute then drive it up some yards so I could wait on the side of the freeway and everyone else could get by--and that's what I did. It was past 6PM so the dealership was closed. AAA came to tow my car. Since the dealership was gated and I couldn't just drop the car there, I had to pay for my car to be stored with AAA overnight which was 100 dollars extra. Then I had to pay a taxi to drive me to the LAX airport where I payed to rent a car for a week and drove back down to San Diego. It was literally a nightmare, one that could've and should've been prevented. Don't trust these dudes. That's the end of this review but to hear the rest of the story you keep reading: You're not going to believe this, the story actually got worse. Maybe after hearing the rest you'll cut LRS some slack. I'm a tough critic so you can decide for yourself. A week went by and I drove my rental car back up to LAX, got a taxi from the airport to the dealership and got my car. I paid the dealership $500 and they sent me on my way. I got on the 101 onramp. I was smooth sailing, except I was stuck in stop-and-go traffic. An hour later and 15 miles down the road, my car overheated and broke down again!!!!! It was the same exact problem!!! The Hornburg Jaguar & Landrover Dealership was just closing. At first they weren't going to help me but I was so upset and kept calling them , letting them know that this just happened, that I'm a young woman and I don't know anyone in LA. They got ahold of the manager and he agreed to help me. I waited on the side of the freeway for three hours when their tow-truck-man picked me up and brought me to the dealership. They gave me one of their cars and agreed to have somebody drive my car down to San Diego when it was fixed so I didn't have to make the trek again. A week later, one of their guys drove my fixed car down. Turns out my engine fan wasn't working and that the stop and go traffic was making the engine hot. When the guy got to my house to trade cars I got inside of the car and realized all the belongings were different. Can you guess what happened?.....He had driven down the wrong car!!! LOL. It might be possible that all of the people who work on Land Rovers are knuckleheads. I'm not really sure. But I want a new car. Maybe a Toyota or a Jeep. read more

I have an 06' Range Rover, and now I have experienced both Land Rover Dealership Service and British Auto service, both provide a fantastic level of service, however, the big difference and when I saw big, I mean huge difference is the price!! Read this carefully & make better decisions than I did... Took an inherited vehicle (in the family for 43 years) to British Auto repair. Reviews seemed "good." Owner (Paul) didn't scare me off. Car isn't driven much at all but, after owning it for 2 years, I thought an oil change might be worthwhile. Told him, "to let me know of any recommendations." Told him I'd be back in 2 weeks to pick it up. Called Paul 2 weeks later to find out it he had driven it into another car (collision) on their lot. Never got called/notified, no apology offered but told me he'd take care of it. I told him to take whatever time he needed, expecting a couple or 3 months would be required. I was crushed - my family member owned it for 43 years before leaving it to me, never had an accident and this happens at a "specialty mechanic?" Called monthly to check on it - did not always get in touch with anyone. Total wait: 6 months. Went to pick it up & was "greeted" with a $1300 bill! After bringing it in for an oil change, my car was damaged in a collision & several items appeared to get vendor-approved, none quoted to me or approved by me, just billed. Horrified, I paid to just get my car the heck outta there & didn't intend to ever go back. It was drivable enough to get home but one of the items (inaccurate fuel gauge readings) I paid for (without agreeing to) was in the same condition as I took it in. Couple weeks later, drove it (1st time since getting it back) & made it a couple blocks from the house when I heard a loud "roar" & saw sparks flying on the driver's side. Entire exhaust pipe (about 3/4's the length of the car) was hanging off & sticking out like a javelin on the driver's side. Limped home holding a scalding hot exhaust pipe using my seat belt. With a still-under-warranty fuel gauge repair needing to be corrected & the exhaust situation, convinced myself (such a bad decision) that I needed to take it back there in hopes that things might be "made right". Had it towed back to British Auto repair. Told him the body work had several inconsistencies (in a negative way) with how it originally arrived at his shop & about the exhaust pipe situation. The exhaust is on the same side of the car that he drove into the other car on his lot. Exhaust pipe on the same side as a collision, falling off, is a pure coincidence? Clearly, not.... Told him to take whatever time it took to get everything that I paid for, & that he caused, corrected. Called monthly & got the "my mechanic is out sick" reply that he apparently gives other customers who have been enduring long waits. 6 months later went to pick it up & was greeted with another bill for ~$1000! Paul told me the body work I pointed out as "not in as good as original condition" didn't get further corrections because it would cost several thousand dollars. In other words, it was considered my problem & expense to bear, not his. On the exhaust situation, he stated, "If I thought that the collision had anything to do with the exhaust components falling off, I wouldn't be charging you for repairing it." I reminded him that I've never had a problem with it before & that it was on the same side of car that he collided into the other vehicle. He didn't take responsibility for it. He also attempted to re-charge me for the still-under-warranty fuel gauge repair (& no, it still doesn't work) that I paid for before. I had to raise my voice about being charged for repairs to damage he caused & that were covered under warranty. He agreed to refund ~$100 for the warrantee repair on the fuel gauge but I was out of luck on the exhaust & proper body work repairs. I had to just get myself & my car outta there. Found on the way home that now the manual overdrive switch no longer worked. Poor car always left there in worse condition than it went in. I get that accidents happen but there were many opportunities NOT taken by this vendor to make things right or just plain "better." Of course, I'll never go there again & I warn anyone against trusting their cherished family heirloom here, like I did. . read more

I have mixed, funky feelings about this shop. I waited for a moment when I wasn't frustrated out of the financial stress of this so that I could write without being brutally subjective. I gave stars because the owner Paul, has been great in the aspect of customer service in a few ways. He waited around after hours until I got off of work to diagnose one of my vehicles. Another time, he walked me through an issue step-by-step over the phone with my other vehicle. And lastly, it is nice that work gets done pretty quickly. 2 different types of vehicles - makes/models/years were brought in on separate occasions. When the vehicles were both "fully diagnosed", we didn't hesitate to pay (with the stigma that it would cost more at the dealerships), being that safety was on our minds-especially hauling kids around. Thousands of dollars later (between both cars), we had to take them both back a week after, when the check engine light came back, on or when it seemed like the initial issues had returned, only to be told that it was a separate, new issue (which again, we paid for) with the understanding that things happen, and parts need to be replaced. But this was happening week after week, and with two totally different vehicles? It probably wouldn't have been so alarming if it was only ONE vehicle. Out of frustration, we called around-including dealerships, who quoted us less, or the same amount as this shop plus a courtesy vehicle. My initial thoughts are to always give people the benefit of doubt; in this case, not think that all auto repair men/shops are grimey, but you can see how the funky feeling in my gut overrode the positive one. .....it is still a business. read more

Ignore the poor ratings from before and TRY THIS SHOP! British Auto Repair is now under new management-so any of you who had a poor experience with the prior owner (as I did) need to give this place a try. The new owner, Paul, just bought the business a month or so ago and he has transformed it. Now there is expertise, honesty and great pricing. Paul races MGs and knows his stuff. As does his team. I just took my 1966 MGB in for a complete clutch job. I was impressed with their level of service and my baby has never driven better. I have used Dennis Tolley's Foreign Car Service for years-and he's great-but now there is a spot for those of us for whom a tow to Lemon Grove is a chore. Paul was super. They have always been friendly, helpful and fixed the problem at minimal cost! I could not think of a negative thing to say if I tried! I have two LandRovers and so I have used their services over the years very consistently and never been disappointed! I have found them to be honest and respectful of my car, time, and not take advantage that I'm a girl like I felt the dealership sometimes did. I have been using Paul to work on my cars for nearly three years now. As the name of his shop implies, he works on British cars. He is very knowledgable about Land Rovers and has always been honest and very responsive to my needs. I do much of the work on my Rovers myself. However, when there is a large job to do that requires a lift or advanced diagnostics, Paulmis the man! I took a RR Evoque to have diagnosed as the transmission box was giving warnings and the performance was affected. After he diagnosed it, he recommended that I take it back to the dealership and have the battery replaced. The battery was still under warranty and it was replaced for free. On another occasion, my wife's RR HSE broke down on the side of the road. I had it towed to his shop and he ran a diagnostic after I told him all the symptoms that she reported before the car shut down. He called me later that day and told me the alternator went bad. He was able to get our RR fixed by the next day and at a price that was half of what the Dealership would have quoted. No problems with the car since then. read more

Ah. You may have changed your name from Land Rover Specialist, but the bad taste in my mouth still sits with how scammed I felt leaving your business. So I will repost my review of your establishment every time you change your business name in San Diego. I had my repair request fulfilled. The friendly (now slimy in my eyes) owner Ian, I believe let me know that he's the only person that works on MGs in San Diego on the road ( big claim, I've since found others. They quoted me an astronomical amount, I paid, and my vintage car sounded great, EXCEPT when you get your car back and told your ignition key is is stuck/jammed/may not work again. I scratched my head and left. On my one stop before home, I can't get my ignition key to turn, practically breaking the bitch off. I call the owner and he says, " I can't get one for you today, but maybe tomorrow I can order one." Guess how much THAT new key and ignition starter piece cost? I was so flabbergasted, I went in and one key works fine for the entire car. I'm driving off with a slight warning of my key may jam?? And now I had to pay $100 bucks for a new key that has to be ordered? I couldn't even word: How did you manage to break my ignition lock and make me pay for it when all you were supposed to touch was the engine? Who's the other lucky customer that got to have MY old ignition and how much did HE have to pay? I'm still duped and not happy about people who do business like you do. read more

I've read the reviews on Yelp and I am greatly puzzled. My wife and I have been going to British Auto Repair, formally Land Rover Specialists, for over 15 years. Our experience with Ian has been simply superb. The repairs are quick and work. Most importantly to us on our budget they are affordable. We've had repairs completed that were done at a fourth of the price we were quoted from other repair facilities. I have recommended Ian (and now the new owner Paul) to a number of friends and associates and their experience has been just as positive as mine. Paul is honest, knowledgeable, courteous, sincere and passionate about his work all of which are obvious after just a few minutes of speaking with him. I inherited a 2001 Discovery 2 which I love but it's a toy I can't really afford. That being said I was having recurring misfiring problems and was starting to panic thinking my engine was about to blow. I called in and got Paul on the phone who calmly walked me through a couple of scenarios with concise, detailed explanations about what the issues might be and how to go about addressing them. He started at the lowest common denominator and suggested I change out my spark plugs which I thought was crazy [ but just kept listening ]. I went out and bought 8 new spark plugs [the right ones] and wrestled the old ones out. First thing I noticed was that the old plugs were not even the correct for the vehicle and looked old as heck, easily several years old. I struggled to get the new plugs in and when finished closed my eyes, crossed my fingers and started my vehicle... It started fine and ran smooth, no more vibrations, no more blinking service lights WOO HOO HOO !!!! It's been a few days and everything is still holding together. I will definitely be bringing my vehicle in to Paul for a general check up. He has earned my trust and respect and I have yet to meet the man face to face. From my experience I now understand why all the other reviews praise Paul, his shop and the work he does so consistently. OUTSTANDING!!! read more

This is the only place to take your British vehicle. Paul is honest, thorough and much more reasonable and competent than the Landrover dealer in town. I started with Paul 5 years ago when the dealer told me I needed $6000 in repairs. Paul completed a thorough diagnostic check of my LR3 for $100 and determined nothing really needed to be done. Turns out he was right. I have had several other repairs done with him since then and he is simply the only one I would ever consider going to in SD for service on my LR3. read more
