The original cave was opened to visitors when its content became public. A cave? With the most beautifully executed paintings from the paleolithic, 16000 years old to you and me. Paintings? nearly 2000, most of them animals, with mainly horses, stags, but also bison and cattle. The paintings are stunning, some of the best in Europe. The walls and ceilings are covered with them. Why a reproduction? because of the damage done to the murals by a fungus that thrives on the carbon visitors exhale. I have visited Lascaux 2 several times and I can assure you that it is very well done, the dimensions of the caves are the same as the original and the paintings are exact replicas. I never had at any time the feeling that this was a fake. The caves are in a wood in the countryside near Montignac. There is ample parking, and the site is accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs, albeit a little inclined. Tickets are not directly for sale on site, you have to buy them from the tourist office in Montignac. To get a better idea, you can visit the website and get a glimpse of what lies in the caves.

A restored former mill, the hotel was beautifully refurbished and decorated. Our room was lovely and spacious, as well as immaculate. The swimming pool provided a welcome respite in the heatwave France was experiencing. We ate breakfast and dinner at the Moulin both days of our visit. All of the food and wine were delicious and served with grace. At petit dejenear (not really petit), fresh-squeezed orange juice, plain yogurt, fresh fruit, and a selection of croissants, along with tea or coffee, were served. Dinner was marvelous. We ordered from one of the menus offered. Standouts were confit de canard and filets de bar. The fish (sea bass) was garnished with shrimp, served with saffron rice and a light lemon butter sauce. The second night one of has the veal chop smothered in fresh, local mushrooms. Before the meal we were served amuse bouche and a sorbet with champagne between courses. For dessert, one of us indulged on the tarte aux pommes with vanilla ice cream (wonderful) and the other on homemade ananas (pineapple) sorbet. The wine selection is excellent and wine by the glass as well as half-bottles are available. We highly recommend Moulin de Vigonac.

We snatched a table close to the Watermill. Our plan was to start with some cocktails and possibly have dinner after. 3 ordered Champagne and I ordered a Champagne cocktail. Comprised of Cognac, Cointreau, Angostura Bitters & Champagne. Something different, refreshing and delicious! The Champagne was enjoyed also. Great atmosphere and vibe for a cocktail. Watching the flow of the lazy river and enjoying beautiful Brantome. Our server started out strong but somehow disappeared after bringing us our drinks which was a disappointment. We ended up paying in front at reception which is the normal process. Our server did thank and acknowledge us as we were leaving so semi recovery. We inquired about dinner but they were booked. Looked like it could be good. So reservations are recommended for dinner. Great spot for a drink with a view!
