I like the Bristol Flyer. It's full of what look to me like young professionals relaxing after a long day. It's smart and fun. The problem is that I'm not a young professional, and so I can't afford the prices that go with this crowd. Three pounds plus for beer is to be expected. This pays for lots of comfy seats and a big garden, though you might still have a bit of trouble getting a space. Lots of thought has gone into this place There are seats hanging from the ceiling somewhere for example, which I think is a good novelty. Also look out for a huge black dog (very friendly) that they let out at the end of the night to signal last orders. Despite (in my mind) being populated by young professionals, there is still a scrum at the bar sometimes. Try going during the day for a slightly more civilised experience.

The Bristol Flyer is fast becoming the place to be for students midweek. With this in mind, alcohol is cheap and there is plenty of space for a large group of you. There is lots of personality in here and a good atmosphere. It's a perfectly good place to visit for an afternoon and if you don't mind being surrounded by hyped up 19year olds then it's a very good place to come for an evening too.

You're paying for the quirks. When you first enter the Bristol Flyer it all seems pretty run of the mill to me, but in a nice way. It's brown leather sofas, real wood tables, great looking bar surrounded by wonderful red and white tiled flooring all give the place a very warm and inviting feel. It's only after a few minutes that you start to notice some odd little quirks they have added here and there. Children's art work on the walls, chairs hanging from ceilings and teapots for your table orders, let's you know that this pub is aimed at the young and ideally the wealthy. No riff raff. Any suspicions I may have had that my wallet was about to take a pounding were confirmed when the barmaid put my pint and half a diet coke down in front of me and asked for something in the region of £6. Yikes, I thought. Better just have one drink with my Sunday lunch. The food was delicious if a little pricey, but they get very busy and on the few occasions I've been there for dinner on a Sunday, they've ran out of various items on the menu by about 2 0'clock.

As big pubs go, The Flyer has it all. Dozens of little cubby holes to hide yourself and your pint away in, a bar stocked with interesting ales, a varied and well thought-out menu and cool decor. Its prices are more prohibitive than your average boozer but I think the atmosphere and the friendly staff make up for that. They also serve the strawberry beer Fruli on tap. It tastes like alcoholic fruit squash and I need no invitation to sink several pints of the stuff. I usually couple my Fruli with a nice little pot of mouth-blasting wasabi nuts. The wine list here is also extensive and the bar staff are quite happy to let you try before you start sloshing it back. The menu ranges from nibbles like a sumptuous baked in its box Camembert and nachos to bigger hearty pub meals like pies, fish and chips and steak. The falafel flat-bread with raita and chips with bloody Mary ketchup is always a winner too. Love the big garden in summer and also love the quiz. Did I mention I loved the Fruli too?

    Review Highlights - Bristol Flyer

I've heard that it was a fairly cheap pub but the fact that Gloucester Road is 'the place to be has driven prices up'

If you know your stuff you can catch some really big pre-fame names (I saw Radiohead for £3.50 many, many years ago, though once turned down the chance to see some new band called 'Oasis' in favour of watching the footie in a pub down the road). Weekends are dominated by tribute nights, which can be fun if you get the right one, while up-and-coming acts vie for your attention during the week, when there are also cheap drinks offers early in the night. The floor is paved with flag stones, convenient if you spill your drink! Probably easier to keep in a decent state with the dancing and moshing that goes on here too. It's on the circuit for small bands trying to get a break. That means the odd act that will be topping the charts in a few years time and not a few bands that definitely won't It's a good space for a band to play, perhaps not quiet enough for singer songwriter type acts. The drinks on offer here aren't too badly priced (and a lot cheaper than the O2 academy, which also has a very dire range on offer, thanks to the corporate sponsorship). Things tend to be a bit calmer here too. Although this might just be because it's not such a big place. A gig here generally gets going towards the end, and their will be the risk of crowddivers falling on you, but I've never been there when things get out of control. If you like live music have a look for a band you know (or a tribute to them) and get a ticket for a good night.

I love it here for a multitude of reasons, but this is one of the main ones. They serve excellent beers at reasonable prices and there's a skittle ally in the back room. All of the skittles are unique, with some being twice as fat as some of the others. The markings dictating where the skittles should be placed are too far apart, making the game unfeasibly difficult, (but this doesn't bother me as I always cheat). The place is decorated in some artfully applied kitsch, and there's a bunch of feisty women serving behind the bar most of the time, who are generally up for a chat as long as they're not too busy. There's a great walled garden that can get incredibly noisy, and an upstairs room with distinctly different look and feel to the downstairs section. I'm unsure what this place serves (probably private hire?), as it has only ever been sparsely used when I've been there, even thought he downstairs has been heaving.

While perhaps not being a pub to which you should make the journey from other parts of Bristol, it's a solid local establishment serving the chatty residents of BS2. It has loads of different areas, including the famous skittles alley, and the much-loved covered back garden which has several large picnic tables to accommodate large groups and smokers. The main ground floor areas inside are cosy, lit with strings of fairy lights. Upstairs, find a space that could be somewhere else completely; with chic low sofas and tables, and art on the walls, it feels more like an upmarket city centre bar. Odd to have such separate areas with distinct atmospheres, maybe, but good to have the options all in one place. When walking through dark local St Werburgh's streets looking for the place, keep your eyes peeled for the splendid exterior covered in graffiti, and listen out for the happy chatter from the smokers in the pub garden.

It couldn't be much more different to the other pubs/bars that it's close to. You can tell from the outside exactly what it'll be like inside; a traditional English, old mans pub. It is actually a really refreshing pub to go and hide away from the horribleness of the waterfront on a Friday or Saturday night. I went on Saturday night for the first time in well over a year. I'd been drinking wine with a meal before hand, so deiced to stick to that; £8 a bottle! Boom! Drinks wise you'll find your bog standard draught lagers, ciders and ales and the usual top shelf suspects. Nothing out of the ordinary here. Apart from a few of the punters - eeeek! Don't make eye contact! If they have eyes, that is! With pub going out of business left right and centre, I can't see this one any time soon. It's serves it's purpose well!

As with most Bristol pubs they serve good local ciders but the best bit is the food. Pieminister, mash, peas and gravy is a must on a cold winter or autumnal day. And if that day is a Wednesday you get a free drink with said meal! Bargain. This is one of those pubs which makes you feel warm and lovely inside when the nights are cold, dark and long, less so in the summer but still well worth a pre-gig visit.
