First, I will say that being from the Los Angeles area, I was thrilled that when I requested estimates for painting my dad's home in Arroyo Grande, that I received three of four requests in a timely way. Thanks Central Coast!! But I hired Brilliant Painting not just because Jimmy met me in person and explained options, but he was respectful of my 94 year old dad's participation in the process. And while I thought I had a pretty specific list of tasks so I could compare apples to apples, he brought ideas to the table that allowed me to simplify and work just with his company, and delivered a prompt and fair estimate. Beyond the painting, he was willing to add on roof power washing, which seriously made all of the difference in the world in the final appearance of the home. Additionally, he also had the skills to add on guards for the rain gutters, and power washed a LOT of concrete (driveway and patio) for an hourly rate to finish the project. This pricing allowed my dad an affordable approach and the flexibility to agree to the extras. The quality of the work went beyond my expectations. The house went from looking like a state park ranger station from the 1990s, to an updated beachy home in the woods. After researching painters on Yelp and through word of mouth, we discovered Brilliant Painting. Impressed by the 100% positive rating, we called the owner, Jim Hunt, who promptly called back and came by to bid on the job immediately. He provided a highly detailed estimate and suggested ways to improve the outcome such as filling in gaps in the fascia and choosing certain brand paints to insure longevity. Bids from 6 other painters failed to deliver the same detail and most estimates simply stated the house would be painted at a much higher price, and one even elected to forego the job. After 30 years of being baked in the hot afternoon sun, the front-door to my house was weather-beaten, with paint peeling in the corners and on the edges of the panels. It is not a fancy door, but wood doors like that are no longer easily available on the market. The easier way out for me would be to replace it with a fiberglass door, which I found unappealing. And, it seems unconscionable to dispose a wood door that is still in good shape. Furthermore, I learned that installing a new door is not necessarily straightforward and can potentially result in problems such as leakage. Instead, I tried looking for a painter to repaint the wood door. That turned out to be easier said than done. It seems professional painters are not particularly interested in a small job that requires detailed work and repeated visits. Jim Hunt, owner of Brilliant Painting, answered my call and was sympathetic to my desire to preserve a wood door. I was especially impressed with his attention to details. He did not seem to mind taking time to sand, prime and apply two coats of paint. He even completely replaced the rotten weatherstripping, installing it properly for a change. It took many weeks for Jim to work around his busy schedule to accommodate this small job. The outcome is impressive. On the outside, the door now looks brand new. On the inside, the door is no longer hot to the touch in the afternoon. The door hardware now works better than ever. And, Jim informed me that the door is actually made of redwood, making its restoration all the more compelling.
