    The Danforth

Queenie's Cards used to be a physical store a few doors down from this store. The owner, Queenie, decided to close her store over a year ago when a bakery had eyed that spot. She has been running her business remotely ever since. She wanted to hold a popup to allow customers to pick up their online orders, which I used to do at her actual store. She also wanted to sell her stock to make room for new merchandise. I am fortunate to have forged a good relationship with her for over two years. I had placed my most recent order before I left on vacation. She was kind to let me pay for it days before this popup. I came here to pick it up, rather than paying for shipping that seems to be increasing often. I used to park on Danforth Avenue using my Green P app to pick up my orders. I haven't been here since her store closed. The parking spaces are now taken up by patio seating for the various restaurants nearby. I had to find a different place to park. Side street parking is free in this area. I parked on Strathmore Boulevard, which is the street north of and parallel to Danforth Avenue. I then walked over here. There was a lineup at around 3:30 pm. The popup start time was 3 pm. It felt like visiting her store on its closing day again. I waited patiently. I wrote a Yelp review. I talked to a woman who asked how long I was in line. The young girl in front constantly rocked back and forth while standing. Interesting. I tried not to get motion-sick looking at her. There was a woman in front of her who was taking photos. She ended up barging in front of the rocking girl and the latter had no clue how to respond or do. What happened to saying, "Excuse me," to have the girl move so you can take your shot? I shot a look of disapproval to photo woman. She apologized. Little Robot Friends is closed on weekends, which made this popup ideal and a reality. As someone who holds a major in Computer Science (undergraduate degree), it was nice to see coding workshops and classes aimed at kids. Perhaps if I had that those options as a kid, I would have been more interested in computers than when I formally took a programming class in grade 11. Classes are held both at the store and virtually. I like that this business is accommodating to the comfort levels of both parents and their children. I finally made it inside the store. The owner of Little Robot Friends welcomed us in. Only four customers were allowed at a time. When you have a crazy lineup happening, it's not the time to hold each Squishmallows plushie and take a photo of it. It's exactly what the barging woman was done. OMG! It's not an inventory photoshoot. You are shopping at a popup. A few highlights: - Christmas Squishmallows are sold out at Costco. Queenie managed to snag a few boxes there to sell the ornaments individually here. I grabbed elf and snowman ornaments. - I saw a 12" watermelon (Wanda) Squishmallows plushie and knew that it had to be mine. - I got my 12" crab (Carlos) from Queenie's Cards. There was another one available, which made me smile seeing his twin. - Queenie did not advertise what Squishmallows were available. I picked up my first mushroom (Malcolm). He always sells out. She commented on my picking him up. Maude the mushroom, which is Queenie's creation, now has a mushroom pal. Maude plushies were also available for purchase. - Punny cards were going for $1 each. I love them for all occasions. The price is a steal. - Her pins were going for $2 each. It was another ridiculous price to take advantage of. - She also had new items, including Pusheen plushies. I did damage at this popup. I got a few Squishmallows, pins, and punny cards. I then got to chat with Queenie and say hi. She went to fetch my bag of goodies. She put my new goodies in the same bag, which was large enough for everything. She was hanging in there. It was busy, which indicates how much we miss her store. She also threw in a couple of Yummimals food plushies. I've always appreciated her personal touch to every order that I get. She normally writes a note of thanks, but she said thanks in person, which was sweet. I wished her a great rest of her popup and left. The space at Little Robot Friends was perfect for this popup. Although I can't comment on the services at this place, I love the concept of getting kids interested in fun coding projects. I got into programming during my first computer science course by creating a simple Pac-Man simulation. I have always loved this arcade game, so it was cool trying to figure out how to show and hide each pellet that Pac-Man consumed. Good times. It was a past life, as I have since crossed the dark side and enjoy writing about technical topics as a profession. It was a fun time picking up my order, shopping, seeing Queenie, and discovering Little Robot Friends. (403)
